ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR. to Open 6/27 at Newnan Theatre

Summer at Newnan Theatre Company is totally dedicated to kids. In addition to the weekly Kids Camp and the Academy of Theatre Arts, NTC is offering Summer Series - 2013, three shows performed entirely by children and teens.

"Alice in Wonderland Jr.," the first show of the series, opens on June 27 and runs for four performances: Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and a Sunday 3:00 pm matinee. Directed by Dave Dorrell, this fast-paced stage adaptation of Disney's 1951 animated film is performed entirely by a cast of middle schoolers - a first for NTC. Even the choreographer is in middle school - 12-year-old Laney Bunce. She is choreographing three of the song and dance numbers: "The Golden Afternoon," "The Caucus Race," and "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah."

"The 30 children we've cast have varied levels of experience," said Dorrell. "Some have been in NTC Kids Camp sessions but have never done a show. Others have performed at the Fox Theatre and the Legacy Theatre."

Karlee Johnson, a two-year NTC veteran, is stage manager. She is an example of how young people get hooked on theatre once they're exposed to it. Recruited by Paul Conroy while she was still in high school, Karlee has worked her way up through the theatre ranks from concession sales to stage manager and even served as assistant director for "Rabbit Hole."

All the children have roles - some are flowers, some are fish, and several are "cards" painting white roses red at the behest of the Queen of Hearts. She shouts her favorite line at them: "Off with their heads!"

There are really no "stars." Some children are playing multiple roles while other roles are shared.

"We've got three Alices," said Dorrell. "Small Alice, regular-sized Alice, and tall Alice. After all, she changes sizes, so a different person has to play her each time. We have three caterpillars as well. They serve as narrator - sometimes speaking from One Direction and then from another."

Different parts of the caterpillar separate, and then he comes back together, part by part. Pulling this off involves some ingenuity, but Dorrell is up to the task.

The show follows the movie "except for our tap-dancing White Rabbit," said Dorrell, who is creating many of the costumes and the props - with some help from his cast. "We've got cardboard fish and lobsters. I'll cut them out and have the kids paint them. That's my secret plot. We did some last weekend, and they had fun. They were painting trees. I said, these are the Wonderland trees, so be creative. They can have stripes, polka dots, or whatever you can imagine. The kids loved the fact that they got to choose their colors and patterns."

"The set's going to be pretty simple," added Dorrell. "We'll let the focus be on the kids."

David Simpatico wrote the "Alice in Wonderland, Jr." book (script) and adapted and wrote additional lyrics. Bryan Louiselle adapted and arranged the music and also wrote additional music and lyrics.

The other two shows in the NTC Summer Series are "Midsummer/Jersey," directed by Katherine Kicklighter, and "Spring Awakening," directed by Mandy Mitchell. "Midsummer/Jersey" runs July 11 - 14 and "Spring Awakening" (mature content) runs July 25--July 28.

Theatrical Outfit is thrilled to announce its 2013-14 season. The lineup is full of great theatre, inspiring playwrights and some of the city's top talent! Sheryl Gripper to Emcee 2nd Annual Black Vintage Movie Series, 6/22

Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall and the Black Vintage Movie Series, Inc. are proud to announce that Emmy Award Winner, Sheryl Gripper, will be the guest emcee for the 2nd Annual Black Vintage Movie Series on June 22, 2013 at the Balzer Theater at Herren's (Home of Theatrical Outfit). Gripper is the Founder of the Black Women Film Network and Co-Founder of the BronzeLens Film Festival.

The one day event will include a performance by the Still Waters Sinfo-Nia Youth Orchestra Quintet at 2:15 P.M. in the theater prior to the movie in the spirit of the Vaudeville era followed by a screening of the 1929 classic "Hallelujah" at 3 PM, a screening of the 1940 classic "Broken Strings" at 6 P.M., followed by a performance by award winning gospel choir Anointed Voices at 7 P.M.

Sheryl Gripper is Founder of the Black Women Film Network, an organization begun in 1997 to increase the number of women of all cultures in the film and media industry. The organization has given more than $25,000 in scholarships to women pursuing careers in film, broadcast and related areas and is undertaking a program to provide completion funding assistance in post production, marketing and distribution for established filmmakers. Gripper is CEO of Rosey Posey Pictures, a film company designed to inspire and enlighten through its projects. Recently, Rosey Posey Pictures collaborated with KneeSlap Productions to produce episodes of "The Adventures of Levi & Movie Man," a comedy short. The company will also produce the feature film "22," the story of a young man who goes from scoring touchdowns to committing crimes. A multi-Emmy Award winner, Gripper was Vice President, Community Relations, for The Networks of 11Alive, Atlanta's NBC affiliate and Channel 36. She is a community relations consultant for the NBC affiliate, 11Alive and continues to be a sought after speaker on diversity in media and film. She was also the Founding Executive Director of The BronzeLens Film Festival. A graduate of Spelman College and Georgia State University, she holds Masters Degrees in Education and Film. The mother of three, she is the wife of Jeff Gripper, Atlanta's First World Karate Champion. As a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, she serves in the Intercessory Prayer and Encouragers ministries. She wrote and produced the documentary "I Didn't Make Him, God Did".

The Black Vintage Movie Series showcases select films from 1920 - 1950. Founded by Jeff Bellamy, the Black Vintage Movie Series was inspired by Jeff's father's enthusiasm for black films from the Great Depression. This era represents a time when families were more tightly structured, when going to the movies meant that men and women dressed impeccably. It was a night out on the town and people carried themselves with respect. During this time actors such as Nina Mae McKinney, worked with very limited technical resources and musicians such as Louie Armstrong played without the benefit of sound enhancements.

We strive to present exclusively black vintage films that highlight the pioneers in film and music. Those that helped pave the way for others who now enjoy the benefits. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Serenbe Playhouse's "Season of Change" is in full swing and next up is Lee Blessing's political drama, A Walk in the Woods, directed by Head of Acting at Kennessaw State University, Harrison Long. A Walk in the Woods has already been named among Atlanta critic Andrew Alexander's Top 5 Arts Events for the month of June and the two person piece is brought to life by acclaimed Atlanta theatre actors, Allan Edwards and Robin Bloodworth.

About the play, Long says "A Walk in the Woods is a witty tug of war between hope and cynicism, between idealism and despair. Blessing's 1988 cold war drama has never been more resonant because we know what the characters don't - that the Berlin Wall crumbled long ago. Aurora Theatre to Present SOUTH PACIFIC, July 3

Aurora Theatre returns for a seventh year to Lawrenceville's Prelude event featuring a Broadway classic musical and Fireworks -- FREE on the lawn of the Lawrenceville Historic Courthouse on Wednesday July 3, 2013. This year Aurora Theatre presents Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. Well known for its extraordinary score, the songs include Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime, Bali Ha'i,There Is Nothin' Like A Dame, and I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair.

Based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific, the musical took home the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1950. South Pacific has stockpiled a staggering 17 Tony Awards, ten for the original run and seven for the 2008 revival. It's a perfect choice for this patriotic celebration because its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences in 1949. Following the performance is a fireworks display, accompanied by the Aurora Theatre orchestra playing the patriotic anthem Stars and Stripes Forever in a moving tribute on the eve of our country's Independence Day.

Freddie Ashley, Actor's Express Artistic Director, directs a cast of Atlanta's top musical theatre talents, and Aurora Theatre Associate Producer and Resident Musical Director Ann-Carol Pence conducts the 20-piece orchestra. Center for Puppetry Arts Stages THE CAT IN THE HAT, Now thru 7/28

Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat is set to delight audiences this summer, making its Center for Puppetry Arts debut tonight, June 13-July 28. The story features everyone's favorite moments with Sally and her brother, their pet Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2-and, of course, the story's namesake, that famous Cat in the red and white striped hat! Zany fun and adventures abound in this memorable tale!

The classic children's book was originally adapted and directed by Katie Mitchell for The National Theatre of Great Britain and was a smash hit in London. The show is now being produced across the U.S. and the Center for Puppetry Arts is thrilled to realize this delightfully funny story through puppetry.

Under the direction of Jon Ludwig, the Center's team has been diligently working to create the puppets, scenery and props from scratch, faithfully adhering to the iconic Seuss style. Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat features tabletop puppetry, animation and a whole bag of tricks to pull off the Cat's daring feats. Performing the familiar characters are skilled puppeteers Dolph Amick, Aaron Gotlieb, Reay Kaplan, Rudy Roushdi, Amy Sweeney and Tim Sweeney.

"We are having a blast adapting this excellent actor version for the puppet stage," said Jon Ludwig, director of the show and the Center's Artistic Director. "Audiences will feel like they have stepped right into the book. I know that this was the book that got me reading, and I can't wait to share the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss with our audiences!"

Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat is presented in the Mainstage Theater, June 13-July 28, 2013. Show times are as follows:
Tuesday - Friday: 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
Saturday: 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Sunday: 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The Center for Puppetry Arts will be closed July 4; no performances on that date.
