TWELFTH NIGHT, ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA and More Set for Atlanta Shakespeare Company's 2013-14 Season

The Atlanta Shakespeare Company at The New American Shakespeare Tavern announces its 2013-2014 Season. Details below!

Twelfth Night

$15 Preview Wed Aug 28

Runs In Repertory Sept 7, 13, 15, 19, 21, 27, 29, 2013

Directed by Drew Reeves

A shipwreck, separated identical twins, mistaken identities, romance and one pair of yellow stockings...welcome to Orsino's court and the zany world of Twelfth Night.

Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday September 15 after the show!

Troilus and Cressida

$15 Preview September 5

Runs In Repertory September 6-12, 14, 20, 22, 26, 28, 2013

Directed by Drew Reeves

Shakespeare tackles Homer, Virgil, and Chaucer in a battle for the ages. In Troilus and Cressida Shakespeare puts his own wickedly ironic spin on the classic tale of Helen of Troy and the "epic" battles fought over her. The Trojan Prince Troilus and his secret love Cressida are separated by the opposing forces without regard to their relationship. Full of drama and satire, come see how Shakespeare turns one of literature's oldest stories on its head.

A part of The Shakespeare Evolution Series: The Tragedies: Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday September 22 after the show!

Othello

$15 Previews October 3 & 4

Directed by Laura Cole

Whispers ... laughter ... a false friend ... and one dainty handkerchief spell ruin for the great and powerful Othello. Is it his love for a woman that is his downfall or is it his own fierce jealousy? Iago ... Desdemona ... Othello ... a handkerchief ... a pillow ... a forceful production you must see.

A part of The Shakespeare Evolution Series: The Tragedies: Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday October 13 after the show!

King Lear

Directed by J. Tony Brown

The ties that bind in King Lear are woven of deceit, greed, grief and joyfulness. Often regarded as Shakespeare's crowning achievement, this tragedy about the relationship between parents and their offspring shows us how quickly we become blinded by fear and killed with love.

A part of The Shakespeare Evolution Series: The Tragedies: Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday November 17 after the show!

Directed by J. Tony Brown

A Holiday Tradition at The Shakespeare Tavern, ASC is proud of this very special adaptation of a timeless classic. A handful of actors bring the wondrous art of storytelling to life, transporting you to Scrooge's London counting house that fateful Christmas when Scrooge meets three Ghosts and a certain little boy named Tiny Tim. This enchanting holiday experience will bring the magic of the season to Scrooge, to The Tavern, and to you. Join us for some Dickens, a bit of song, and a lot of holiday cheer.

Directed by Jeff Watkins

This tale of the fiery and highly comedic romance of Kate and Petruchio still entertains after 400+ years but the debate still stands: just who tames whom?

Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday January 12 after the show!

Timon of Athens

$15 Preview TBA

Runs January 2014 (in repertory)

Directed by Drew Reeves

"We have seen better days". - (Act IV, Scene II).

Timon is a wealthy Athenian noble who responds to flattery by hosting banquets, giving gifts and bailing out his suitors. When his fortune runs out and his friends reject his pleas for help, he becomes an embittered recluse and, after seeing that those who abandoned him suffer, withdraws to die.

Money: it can't buy love, but it can promote hate.

Timon of Athens may be a simple story about a generous and self-indulgent man driven to misanthropy by his fair-weather friends, but it produces an avalanche of philosophical questions: Does Timon deserve our compassion for shunning society and condemning/contaminating the very people he once called friends? Does he deserve to be punished for his vanity and ostentation or is he right to expect more from his parasitic friends? Is there a place for cynicism in society? Watch and Decide.

A part of The Shakespeare Evolution Series: The Tragedies: Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday January 19 after the show!

Romeo and Juliet

$15 Previews January 30 & 31

Runs February 1, 2, 6, 7, 14, 15, 22, 28, March 6, 9, 15, 21, 27, 30, 2014 (in repertory)

Directed by Matt Felten

We invite you to join us for our 14th anniversary of performing this play about young lovers, feuding families and one Friar with good intentions.

Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday March 9 after the show!

Much Ado About Nothing

Runs February 8, 13, 20, 23, March 1, 7, 13, 16, 22, 28, 2014 (in repertory)

Directed by J. Tony Brown

Shakespeare's second-famous "battle of the sexes" play. Will Benedick, the ever-confirmed bachelor, admit his love for the equally witty and equally independent Beatrice? Will the young lovers Claudio and Hero survive the devious meddling of others? What do you want to bet there will be two weddings in the end?

Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday March 16 after the show!

Macbeth

$15 Previews April 3 & 4

Runs April 5-May 4

Directed by Troy Willis

Witches ... prophecy ... greed ... desire for power ... a wife's yearnings ... which is it that seals the tragic fate of Macbeth and his country? Journey to Scotland for this haunting tale. Macbeth is sure to thrill and to chill.

A part of The Shakespeare Evolution Series: The Tragedies: Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday April 13 after the show!

The Comedy of Errors

$15 Previews May 8 & 9

Runs May 10-June 1, 2014

Directed by Andrew Houchins

Two sets of twins, one case of mistaken identity, and a nun walk onto the stage. No, it's not the start of a joke, but it is hilarious! The Comedy of Errors takes Shakespearean funny to such slap-happy heights, you'll be dizzy with laughter. This tale of the merchant twins Antipholus and the servant twins Dromio is full of errors, upsets, and fun.

Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday May 18 after the show!

Antony and Cleopatra

$15 Previews June 5 & 6

Runs June 7-29, 2014

Directed by Jeff Watkins

The Tavern stage becomes Egypt and Rome to tell this story of a passion so legendary that it ignites battles and jeopardizes kingdoms, ultimately consuming its lovers and the entire ancient world. Even Brad and Angelina can't top that.

A part of The Shakespeare Evolution Series: The Tragedies: Join the cast and crew members for a lively Question and Answer session on Sunday June 15 after the show!

ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR. to Open 6/27 at Newnan Theatre

Summer at Newnan Theatre Company is totally dedicated to kids. In addition to the weekly Kids Camp and the Academy of Theatre Arts, NTC is offering Summer Series - 2013, three shows performed entirely by children and teens.

"Alice in Wonderland Jr.," the first show of the series, opens on June 27 and runs for four performances: Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and a Sunday 3:00 pm matinee. Directed by Dave Dorrell, this fast-paced stage adaptation of Disney's 1951 animated film is performed entirely by a cast of middle schoolers - a first for NTC. Even the choreographer is in middle school - 12-year-old Laney Bunce. She is choreographing three of the song and dance numbers: "The Golden Afternoon," "The Caucus Race," and "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah."

"The 30 children we've cast have varied levels of experience," said Dorrell. "Some have been in NTC Kids Camp sessions but have never done a show. Others have performed at the Fox Theatre and the Legacy Theatre."

Karlee Johnson, a two-year NTC veteran, is stage manager. She is an example of how young people get hooked on theatre once they're exposed to it. Recruited by Paul Conroy while she was still in high school, Karlee has worked her way up through the theatre ranks from concession sales to stage manager and even served as assistant director for "Rabbit Hole."

All the children have roles - some are flowers, some are fish, and several are "cards" painting white roses red at the behest of the Queen of Hearts. She shouts her favorite line at them: "Off with their heads!"

There are really no "stars." Some children are playing multiple roles while other roles are shared.

"We've got three Alices," said Dorrell. "Small Alice, regular-sized Alice, and tall Alice. After all, she changes sizes, so a different person has to play her each time. We have three caterpillars as well. They serve as narrator - sometimes speaking from One Direction and then from another."

Different parts of the caterpillar separate, and then he comes back together, part by part. Pulling this off involves some ingenuity, but Dorrell is up to the task.

The show follows the movie "except for our tap-dancing White Rabbit," said Dorrell, who is creating many of the costumes and the props - with some help from his cast. "We've got cardboard fish and lobsters. I'll cut them out and have the kids paint them. That's my secret plot. We did some last weekend, and they had fun. They were painting trees. I said, these are the Wonderland trees, so be creative. They can have stripes, polka dots, or whatever you can imagine. The kids loved the fact that they got to choose their colors and patterns."

"The set's going to be pretty simple," added Dorrell. "We'll let the focus be on the kids."

David Simpatico wrote the "Alice in Wonderland, Jr." book (script) and adapted and wrote additional lyrics. Bryan Louiselle adapted and arranged the music and also wrote additional music and lyrics.

The other two shows in the NTC Summer Series are "Midsummer/Jersey," directed by Katherine Kicklighter, and "Spring Awakening," directed by Mandy Mitchell. "Midsummer/Jersey" runs July 11 - 14 and "Spring Awakening" (mature content) runs July 25--July 28.

To purchase tickets, and for show dates and times, visit Newnan Theatre Company's web site at www.newnantheatre.org or visit the box office before or after any performance. The theatre is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue.

Pictured: Molly McInturff, Lauren Smith, and Abigail Lawson as small Alice, regular-sized Alice, and tall Alice. Story by Joan Doggrell.

The national tour of Roundabout Theatre Company's ANYTHING GOES, the new Broadway revival of Cole Porter's timeless classic musical theatre masterpiece, will make its Atlanta premiere August 20-25, 2013 at The Fox Theatre as part of the Theater of the Stars 2013-2014 series.

Tickets start at $25 and are on sale now at www.FoxATLTix.com or by calling 855-ATL-TIXX (855-285-8499). Special group rates for 10 or more are available by calling 404-881-2000, emailing foxgroup@foxtheatre.org or online at www.foxtheatre.org/groupsales.aspx. Half-price tickets are available for the Tuesday and Wednesday performances by using the code "AJC".

Winner of the 2011 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Roundabout Theatre Company's ANYTHING GOES sails direct from Broadway under the direction ofKathleen Marshall, who won the 2011 Tony Award for Best Choreography. The New York Times calls it "a zesty new revival with knockout numbers and white-hot dancing" while the AP exclaims that it's, "so delightful, so delicious, so de-lovely!"

ANYTHING GOES, the 1934 musical comedy about the lovers, liars and clowns on a transatlantic cruise is "a daffy, shipshape romp!" - Variety. When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love... proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail.

Theatrical Outfit Announces 2013-14 Season: THE GUYS, HARABEL, GIFTS OF THE MAGI & More!

Theatrical Outfit is thrilled to announce its 2013-14 season. The lineup is full of great theatre, inspiring playwrights and some of the city's top talent! Kicking the season off on 9/11 is The Guys by Anne Nelson, featuring Jasmine Guy and Brian Kurlander; next, Harabel by and featuring Jonida Beqo; following the turn of the year is Best of Enemies by Mark St. Germain; and closing out the season is Horton Foote's Dividing the Estate. Making a return for the holidays is Gifts of the Magi by Mark St. Germain.

"Theatrical Outfit's 2013-2014 season is selected to illuminate the life-fact that change is inevitable, but growth is optional," says Tom Key, Executive Artistic Director. "The characters of these plays face adverse, even life-threatening, external circumstances out of their control. What makes compelling theatre is watching how they change the only thing they can, their very selves; and in so doing, make meaning from suffering, and transform tragedy into comedy."

Subscriptions are on sale now at the box office, by phone (1.877.725.8849), or online at www.theatricaloutfit.org.

By Anne Nelson
September 11 - October 6, 2013
Directed by Elisa Carlson
Based on playwright Nelson's own story, we meet Joan, an editor, as she receives an unexpected phone call from Nick, the fire captain. He requests her help on composing the many eulogies he must deliver at memorial services for the men he lost on 9/11. As the afternoon wanes, a friendship grows while the two navigate the emotional landscape of grief, drawing on humor and the bonds of a common humanity.

HARABEL
By Jonida Beqo
October 23 - November 10, 2013
Directed by Justin Anderson
This riveting one-woman narrative thrills and inspires. Jonida Beqo--known on the slam poetry scene as Gypsee Yo--boasts international awards and critical praise. Featured on NPR's "Snap Judgment" and at Lincoln Center's Out of Doors Series, Beqo, the 2008 Southern Queen of Slam, intertwines theatre, dance and poetry to tell her dynamic personal journey from Albanian refugee to American resident, illuminating the universal truths that link us one to the other and to the joy of embracing life at all costs.

GIFTS OF THE MAGI*
By Mark St. Germain
November 27 - December 22, 2013
Directed by Heidi Cline McKerley; Music Direction by S. Renee Clark
Back by popular demand, the heartwarming Holiday musical filled with goodness, love and unselfish spirit, THE GIFTS OF THE MAGI returns next season with all its trimmings in place. Based on two of O. Henry's classic short stories, "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Cop and the Anthem", it's Christmas in New York City, 1904, and Della and Jim, a poor newlywed couple, mutually sacrifice their most precious possessions in order to buy each other a Christmas present while ne'er-do-well Soapy Smith simply hankers to get arrested so he can spend the Holiday in a cozy cell. Wrapped in tuneful songs and neatly tied together by a newsboy narrator this tale will fill your heart with the joy of Christmas. Or in the merry words of Atlanta INTown: "The show is a small gem-see it."

THE BEST OF ENEMIES
By Mark St. Germain
January 29 - February 23, 2014
Directed by Mira Hirsch
Inspired by Osha Gray Davidson's book of the same name and based on a true story, Mark St. Germain's new drama, THE BEST OF ENEMIES reveals a universal truth: all people, no matter their differences, are capable of change. Amidst their incendiary words of prejudice and fear, Ann, a civil rights activist, and C.P., an Exalted Cyclops of the KKK, forge an alliance based in respect and trust in an honest-to-goodness, modern-day parable of transformation and triumph for civil rights.

DIVIDING THE ESTATE
Directed by Tom Key
Old resentments and sibling rivalries bubble to the surface as the hilariously dysfunctional Gordon family of Harrison, Texas, spar to claim the biggest piece of the pie in the wildly funny, Tony-nominated DIVIDING THE ESTATE by Pulitzer Prize and Oscar-winning Horton Foote. Matriarch StElla Gordon keeps her aging and money-strapped children on a short financial leash with no plans to split her 100-year old estate. But the kids have other ideas.

The Black Vintage Movie Series showcases select films from 1920 - 1950. Founded by Jeff Bellamy, the Black Vintage Movie Series was inspired by Jeff's father's enthusiasm for black films from the Great Depression. This era represents a time when families were more tightly structured, when going to the movies meant that men and women dressed impeccably. It was a night out on the town and people carried themselves with respect. During this time actors such as Nina Mae McKinney, worked with very limited technical resources and musicians such as Louie Armstrong played without the benefit of sound enhancements.

We strive to present exclusively black vintage films that highlight the pioneers in film and music. Those that helped pave the way for others who now enjoy the benefits. We celebrate their pioneering spirit in opening doors for African Americans in the motion picture industry. We look forward to celebrating these achievements with you.

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless. This version of JOSEPH?DREAMCOAT features extended songs and dances. The Megamix is available as a separate rental with this version. It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent '60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus' meteor-like rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ's final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.Lyrics by Tim Rice; Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.Music by Rodgers, Richard; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse; Suggested by `The Trapp Family Singers` by Maria Augusta Trapp

The Brothers Grimm "go Broadway" as Sondheim and Lapine offer up a cockeyed fairy tale where all of your favorite characters""Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and The Witch""meet and interact on their journeys. With unforgettable roles, little dancing and no chorus, INTO THE WOODS JR. showcases a medium-sized ensemble of talented singers and actors. The sophisticated score has been adapted to make it easier--though still challenging--for young performers. INTO THE WOODS JR. is a funny and engaging way to get young people to think about the stories with which they've grown up and the ethical issues raised therein.

Serenbe Playhouse to Present A WALK IN THE WOODS, 6/27-7/14

Serenbe Playhouse's "Season of Change" is in full swing and next up is Lee Blessing's political drama, A Walk in the Woods, directed by Head of Acting at Kennessaw State University, Harrison Long. A Walk in the Woods has already been named among Atlanta critic Andrew Alexander's Top 5 Arts Events for the month of June and the two person piece is brought to life by acclaimed Atlanta theatre actors, Allan Edwards and Robin Bloodworth.

About the play, Long says "A Walk in the Woods is a witty tug of war between hope and cynicism, between idealism and despair. Blessing's 1988 cold war drama has never been more resonant because we know what the characters don't - that the Berlin Wall crumbled long ago. But in an age of homegrown terrorists and sophisticated cyber-warriors, world peace has never been more tenuous. Lasting progress can never be made until we can look across the world (or the negotiating table) and recognize ourselves in one another. Despite all the global implications, at its core A Walk in the Woods is a play about friendship."

Revealing conversations, profound frustration and deepening understanding - two superpower arms negotiators, a Russian and American, meet in the woods of Geneva to negotiate nuclear disarmament. In A Walk in the Woods, the elemental differences in two systems of government will continue to exacerbate as long as the real power rests in the hands of those burdened by the bitterness of the past.

Center for Puppetry Arts Stages THE CAT IN THE HAT, Now thru 7/28

Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat is set to delight audiences this summer, making its Center for Puppetry Arts debut tonight, June 13-July 28. The story features everyone's favorite moments with Sally and her brother, their pet Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2-and, of course, the story's namesake, that famous Cat in the red and white striped hat! Zany fun and adventures abound in this memorable tale!

The classic children's book was originally adapted and directed by Katie Mitchell for The National Theatre of Great Britain and was a smash hit in London. The show is now being produced across the U.S. and the Center for Puppetry Arts is thrilled to realize this delightfully funny story through puppetry.

Under the direction of Jon Ludwig, the Center's team has been diligently working to create the puppets, scenery and props from scratch, faithfully adhering to the iconic Seuss style. Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat features tabletop puppetry, animation and a whole bag of tricks to pull off the Cat's daring feats. Performing the familiar characters are skilled puppeteers Dolph Amick, Aaron Gotlieb, Reay Kaplan, Rudy Roushdi, Amy Sweeney and Tim Sweeney.

"We are having a blast adapting this excellent actor version for the puppet stage," said Jon Ludwig, director of the show and the Center's Artistic Director. "Audiences will feel like they have stepped right into the book. I know that this was the book that got me reading, and I can't wait to share the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss with our audiences!"

Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat is presented in the Mainstage Theater, June 13-July 28, 2013. Show times are as follows:
Sunday: 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The Center for Puppetry Arts will be closed July 4; no performances on that date.
