Performance Network Theatre Looks to Indiegogo to Raise Money for Children's Theatre Network

Performance Network Theatre has accepted the challenge to raise $4 thousand in 30 days to acquire new sound equipment for the Children's Theatre Network. The fundraiser is available for viewing on the crowdsourcing website, Indiegogo at http://igg.me/at/letourvoicesbeheard/x/815274 now through July 12, 2013.

The campaign video, in the style of a silent film, shows a beautiful young lady sitting alone on a park bench. When a mini-sized Chaplin impersonator, Inaudible Ichabod, approaches her with the biggest of frowns, the young girl mimes, "Why are you so sad?" Inaudible Ichabod explains via title screen, "Without sound equipment, no one can hear me." Then, with a flash of sound and color a group of children proclaim, "LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD."

Children's Theatre Network is a part of Performance Network Theatre, a leading theatre in Southeastern Michigan since 1981. The addition of sound equipment will help CTN reach more children and provide the following:

Original shows that entertain while educating and providing positive life lessons, performed at Performance Network Theatre, area schools and community centers.

After school classes at elementary schools that encourage literacy and healthy self-expression.

Theatre workshops, teaching students creativity, problem solving, and self-confidence.

"Get in the Game," an innovative program that utilizes theatre workshops and performances to combat high school dropout rates at high-risk high schools.

Jobs for local actors, instructors, playwrights, and directors who are passionate about positively influencing kids.

All donations will be used toward the purchase of sound equipment for the Children's Theatre Network's touring programs and shows. The campaign's contributions will be applied to five sound cables, two transportation cases, two microphone stands, one sound mixer, four wireless microphones, and two speakers.

According to the American Alliance for Theatre Education, drama activities improve reading comprehension, both verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and can help youth recognize their potential for success and improve their confidence. Support theatre for children and support their overall well-being!

All donation amounts are accepted and appreciated for the campaign. Every donation level has specialized perks for the donors and their children.

For a $15 donation, donors will receive a personalized thank you letter with a list of theatre activities to try at home.

For a $40 donation, donors will have a special child (or children) recognized in the opening speech of their next Children's Theatre Network's performance.

For a $65 donation, donors will receive an opening speech shout out and a complimentary family package to a Children's Theatre Network show.

For a $90 donation, donors will receive two complimentary tickets to a Performance Network Theatre main stage production for a night without the kids.

For a $120 donation, donors will get a meet and greet with the cast during their next trip to the Children's Theatre Network.

For a $250 donation, donors will receive free admission to the Build-a-Play summer workshop for kids.

For a $600 donation, a special child in the donor's life will get to spend a day at the theatre, learning all aspects of the theatre: performing, directing, playwriting, set construction, and more!

For a $700 donation, a school of the donor's choosing will receive a free performance of a Children's Theatre Network touring production. The donor will be listed as the sponsor of the show.

For a $1,000 donation, donors will have a Children's Theatre Network character named after a child of their choosing! New works are developed every year for the Children's Theatre Network and donors can play a big part in the script!

For more information about the fundraiser or the Children's Theatre Network, visit performancenetwork.org or e-mail Children's Theatre Network Director, Becky Fox at becky@performancenetwork.org.

Founded in 1981, Performance Network Theatre has grown from a fledgling company to Ann Arbor's resident professional theatre. The Network reaches 40,000 theatre patrons and children each year through the year-round Professional Series and the Children's Theatre Network. Performance Network also presents the Fireside New Play Festival and a series of classes on theatre-related topics. The Network provides uncompromising artistic leadership in the region and produces works that engage, challenge and inspire audiences and artists.

Veteran Tribute to Be Presented at Arlo Guthrie Concert, 10/3

One is a priest who ministered to the Michigan State University community for decades. The other is a leader in physical therapy for the injured. But before that, both men answered the call of their country.

That service and sacrifice will be recognized the night of a benefit concert by folk legend Arlo Guthrie, Oct. 3 at the Wharton Center. A portion of early ticket sales will benefit the veterans programs of Volunteers of America Michigan, the state's largest private provider of services to homeless veterans.

The concert will be the centerpiece of the 2013 Veteran Tribute, where Volunteers of America Michigan will honor Father Jake Foglio, who served in the Marines in the Korean War era, and Mr. Len Face, who was wounded following the invasion of Normandy that turned the tide in World War II. Foglio and Face were chosen as recipients of the John E. Demmer Award - named for the first recipient, World War II veteran and Lansing business leader John Demmer - for their lifetimes of service.

"Both men defended our freedom," said Patrick Patterson, Executive Vice President of Volunteers of America Michigan. "And they never stopped fighting for our wellbeing when they returned to civilian life."

Foglio served decades at St. John Church and Student Center and is a fixture in the Michigan State University community. Face, during his recuperation in England, became part of a pioneering physical therapy program for wounded soldiers. He brought his expertise to the Lansing area when he returned to civilian life.

Details about ticket sales and sponsorships: voami.org/sp/2013-Veteran-Tribute

There are the college students, barely at the beginning of their adult lives; the thirty-somethings, having trouble conceiving but determined to try; and the middle aged parents, looking forward to seeing their last child graduate from college when a night of unexpected passion lands them back where they started.

Lacey Cubbard, a precocious African American young lady, new to the neighborhood, gently swings back and forth on the swing. Kate enters, sits on one of the lawn chairs, opens her shoulder bag, withdraws a stack of papers and begins to read. This seemingly precious and innocent beginning soon evolves into a gorgeous poem/play about mothers and daughters, race, suburbia, academia, identity and poetry.

Lacey, the English teacher, Kate, and eventually Lacey's mother are woven into a pattern that is both tangled and delicate, both tortuous and lovely.

Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS never fails to entertain. A small cast, band and unit set make the other aspects of production a snap.

This international smash-hit may be the most popular musical in the world. In 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean's adopted daughter. His world-view shattered, Javert commits suicide, and Valjean at last attains the peace he has sought for so long.Epic, grand and uplifting, LES MISÃ?RABLES packs an emotional wallop that has thrilled audiences all over the world. The sung-through pop opera is ideal for a cast of exceptional singers and overflows with melodies that are already standards. A spectacle on Broadway and in London, LES MISÃ?RABLES is equally effective with a minimal set; it is its powerful affirmation of the human spirit that has made LES MISÃ?RABLES a popular masterpiece.

The clashing sounds and pulsing rhythms of New York City underscore this landmark "concept" show, considered by many to have inaugurated the modern era of musical theatre. COMPANY follows our anti-hero bachelor Robert as he makes his way through a series of encounters with April (the stewardess), Kathy (the girl who's going to marry someone else), Marta (the "peculiar" one), as well as with his married friends. On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor Robert Contemplates his unmarried state. In vignette after hilarious vignette, we are introduced to "those good and crazy people," his married friends, as Robert weighs the pros and cons of married life. In the end, he realizes being alone is "alone, not alive."An honest, witty, sophisticated look at relationships, COMPANY
is as contemporary and relevant as ever (witness the recent hit
revivals on Broadway and the West End). It features a brilliant
energetic score containing many of Stephen Sondheim's best-known songs
(including "Another Hundred People," "The Ladies Who Lunch" and "Being

The seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in this most unconventional of Broadway hits. 1776 puts a human face on the pages of history as we see the men behind the national icons: proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation. It's the summer of 1776, and the nation is ready to declare independence...if only our founding fathers can agree to do it! 1776 follows John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Richard Henry Lee and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia as they attempt to convince the members of the second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence.1776 is a funny, insightful, and compelling drama with a striking score and legendary book. It is an extremely flexible show that can be performed with characters as written or as a concert version 1776 STAGED CONCERT VERSIONThe MTI Marquee provides a number of articles on unique staging and casting ideas for 1776 in order to make the show more produce-able in your theatre while remaining engaging to audience members. Of particular note is a Staged Concert Version of the show which allows for blind casting and minimal costumes.

Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty exploded on the musical theatre scene in 1988 with their first off-Broadway show, LUCKY STIFF. Based on the novel The Man Who Broke The Bank At Monte Carlo by Michael Butterworth, LUCKY STIFF is a zany, offbeat, and very funny murder mystery farce complete with slamming doors, mistaken identities, six million bucks in diamonds, and a corpse in a wheelchair. The story revolves around an unassuming English shoe salesman who is forced to take the embalmed body of his recently-murdered Atlantic City uncle on a vacation to Monte Carlo. Should he succeed in passing Uncle off as alive, Harry Witherspoon stands to inherit $6,000,000.
BWW Reviews: 50 SHADES THE MUSICAL is Trashy, Tacky, Wicked and WONDERFUL

50 SHADES THE MUSICAL is an interesting snapshot of people who live alternative lifestyles. In this case, it is the BDSM lifestyle. To make it simple, this crowd comprises the people who enjoy being slapped around, plus their dominant partners who beat them.

The conceptualization of torture for fun is beyond my realm of understanding, but there are over 700 people in the Detroit area who are seriously into it, according to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/michiganbdsmsocialclub/ . One of my friends is familiar with that scene, so I took her with me to get a take on her perceptions.

Mary thought the musical was cute, not very graphic, and was just risqué enough to excite the suburban white women who were weening themselves off romance novels. Mary found it rather mild - she attended an actual BDSM wedding ceremony in a "dungeon" near Eastern Market where a dominant groom married his submissive slave. During the ceremony of holy matrimony, the bride was hoisted to the ceiling with chains and became the human piñata. There were no piñatas in 50 Shades The Musical, however there was a Latin lover played by a very white geek.

I'm not into pain, so BDSM does nothing for me. But fortunately, I have a really warped sense of humor and just enough white trash genes to find the show hilarious. Ludicrous, but hilarious. The musical takes ridiculous passages from the book and turns them into outrageously absurd vignettes.

I met one of my students in the Fisher Lobby during the show; Frank said his wife read the book and the main domination character was portrayed as suave, sexy, tall, hunky and highly desirable. The character in the musical was a short, obese Asian dude wearing some sort of tight, red mankini - revealing a dearth of assets. When it came to down to numbers, this man apparently drew the shortest straw.

There were folks with good taste who fled the show during intermission, but fortunately, it left more elbow room for us rough and tumble folk. The show was trashy, tacky, wicked and WONDERFUL! The music was fabulous, the actors were hysterically funny, and the plot was unique, to say the least.

I would recommend this show to the devoutly religious conservatives who believe sex between one man and one woman is the only acceptable and moral form of relationship. I would have enjoyed seeing the story line end in a BDSM wedding, so they who believe same-sex marriage destroys the sanctity and righteousness of their holy unions might have another bragging right to place upon their list.

I'm not one to judge other people, so if BDSM floats your boat, go for it. As they say, "Different strokes for different folks" (literally, that is). I would hazard to guess that The Queen of England wouldn't be caught dead at a show like this, but suspect Prince Harry or Fergie, The Duchess of York would have a ball.

50 SHADES! THE MUSICAL comes for the first time to Detroit at the Fisher Theatre, June 14 - 16. Tickets are now on sale at the Fisher Theatre box office, all Ticketmaster locations, by phone at 1-800-982-2787, and online at www.ticketmaster.com.

The Williamston Theater to Present TUNA DOES VEGAS, 7/11-8/18

The Williamston Theatre, mid-Michigan's award winning professional theatre company located at 122 S. Putnam Street in downtown Williamston, brings its Tuna Trilogy to a climactic conclusion with Tuna Does Vegas by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard. The Official Opening Night is Friday, July 19 with the show scheduled to run through Sunday, August 18. When Arles Struvie announces on air that he and his wife, Bertha Bumiller, are heading to Vegas to renew their wedding vows everyone in Tuna goes along for the ride! Tuna Does Vegas is an affectionate comment on small-town life as well as a hilarious satire of the same.
Vocalist Kate Brennan and pianist Harvey Reed will present their jazz cabaret show "The Melody Lingers On" with Paul Keller on bass, tonight, June 14 at Matrix Theatre located at 2730 Bagley in the heart of southwest Detroit's Mexicantown. The show begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $50. Seating is limited.

Brennan and Reed have been sharing their special brand of jazz cabaret with audiences since 1992 when they took to the stage at the Whitney Restaurant on its Jazz on 3 series. Since then, they have performed at Kerrytown Concert Hall in Ann Arbor, Orchestra Hall, Cuisine Restaurant, and numerous other local venues.
