Hart House Theatre, the University of Toronto's Performing Arts Leader Since 1919, is proud to announce its 2013/2014 season. With a diverse mix of classical and contemporary work, Hart House Theatre continues its tradition of producing affordable and accessible high-quality productions for downtown Toronto audiences. The 2013/2014 Season features two Governor General's Award winning Canadian plays, one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies and a deliciously quirky musical based on a popular film.

Bone Cage
By Catherine Banks
Directed by Matthew White
Toronto Premiere

Winner of the 2008 Governor General's Literary Award for Drama, Bone Cageexplores the desolation and desperate struggle of a group of young adults striving to rise above the pillaged landscape of rural Nova Scotia. Through dark poetry and wry humour, Banks creates a world where all people are trapped in cages of their own construction - as inescapable as their own bodies.

Shakespeare's beloved comedy begins with a shipwreck and ends with marriages, reunions and some good old-fashioned revenge - with plenty of hijinks and hilarity in between. Featuring some of the Bard's most memorable comedic characters, Twelfth Night is classic comedy at its best, full of mistaken identity, disguise, intrigue and, above all, the search for love.
Winner of the Governor General's Award for Drama and the Floyd S. Through Constance's often-hilarious subconscious journey of self-discovery, Shakespeare's archetypal heroines are shown in a new light as they try to untangle issues of identity, sexuality and self-worth.
BWW Reviews: I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE Touches on Human Truths

In Robert Anderson's play You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running, a writer pitches a producer on including small human moments in their upcoming play. Moments that the audience will take delight in identifying with their own lives. He calls it the shock of recognition. That phrase best sums up much of the appeal of the long running off-Broadway show I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. The show enjoyed a 12-year run in New York and has gone on to be presented all over the world.

Much of the credit for the success of this production by Angelwalk and Koogle Theatre is due to director Evan Tsitsias who keeps the staging brisk, simple and uncluttered. A few chairs and a table are all that are needed to establish the setting for each number.

Music director Scott Christian ensures that the performers are secure in their musical performances. Jimmy Roberts provides the music and while it lacks a single stand-out tune that will leave you wanting more, it does hit all the right notes emotionally. The best parts of the songs are Joe DiPietro's often insightful lyrics which the cast delivers with precision.

Early on Leslie Kay and Allison O'Neil present their lament about a "Single Man Drought" winning laughter and applause. Both ladies have strong voices which blend nicely without overshadowing each other. Kay has delicious way of throwing us a knowing look as she delivers some of the more acerbic lines, while O'Neill finds subtle ways to explore the touching truths that thread through most of the songs.

Opposite them, Dean Hollin and Christopher Alan Gray humorously offer up the male point of view in "Why? 'Cause I'm a Guy." Hollin in particular has a sweet voice and plays many scenes with a dopey innocence. Gray is a more traditional leading man type and the contrast between the two severs the subtext very effectively.

That subtext is greatly supported by the tender violin of Tamara Hrycak supplying the romantic counterpoint to Evan Tsitsias' driving keyboard. It's a small "orchestra" but even so provides a rich range of musical colors to accompany the performers.

Most of all, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change is light-hearted fun. The best example of this is a family auto trip in the second half called "On the Highway of Love" which is loaded with simple truths that will have many viewers thinking "Hey, that's just like us." Robert Anderson was right - nothing pleases an audience more than seeing their own lives reflected on stage.

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change is on stage in the Studio Theatre at the Toronto centre for the Arts until June 2. For tickets or performance information log onto www.angelwalk.ca or call the box office at 1-855-985-2787.

BWW Interviews: Randy Graff to Present Master Class in Toronto

Tony Award Winner Randy Graff is coming to Toronto this month to conduct a unique Master Class. Titled 'Acting the Song and Acing the Audition', Ms. Graff will focus on teaching students the ability to convey emotion through song. As she says, if you can make her laugh or cry, you get a gold star!

The workshop was originally intended to happen last December, but was postponed and is now happening next weekend with Toronto casting agent extraordinaire Stepanie Gorin joining in for Monday's session.

BWW spoke to Ms. Graff about the master class before in preparation for her December outing, and here's what she had to say:

Could you give us an overview of what something like this entails?

The class is a three day workshop called 'Acting the Song'. Students will get to work on one ballad and one uptempo song of their choosing. The focus of the class is on telling the story, communicating to your audience the meaning of the song by being able to personalize the lyrics. That's what singing for the theatre is all about. I want the students to feel as comfortable as possible and not at all self conscious so that they can do their best work. No one should be worrying about hitting any money notes! If you can make me laugh and cry in this workshop than you get a gold star!

When was the last time you worked in Toronto?

I've actually never worked in Toronto, but I was there around 1998 visiting my husband who was music directing RENT. It's a great city!

How does conducting a Master Class compare with performing in a Broadway show? Which do you prefer?

I actually love doing both. There is a bit of performance energy you need when you're standing in front of a classroom. You must be focused and concentrated on the student at all times. There isn't time to run off stage in between scenes! I find as I get older that my need to perform as turned into more of a want. It doesn't define me the way it did when I was younger in the business. I did reach a point in my life when I realized that I needed to pass on what I have learned, and to teach and honour all my incredible teachers. It is very gratifying to watch a student 'get it' and also a thrill to see an audience collectively moved during a performance. I like not hearing that pin drop.

With the recent success of the Les Miserables movie and the new 25th Anniversary Production on its way to Toronto, we've been hearing a lot of buzz surrounding a show that was an important part of your life. Could you tell us what was the biggest thing you took away from your time in Les Miserables?

In terms of what I took away from the experience? When we were in D.C. at the end of the first preview the audience would not leave. we were in our dressing rooms and they were still standing there. So John Cairdcame running down to the basement of the Kennedy Center Opera House yelling 'get up there! They're still standing!' I ran up there in my Fantine gown and bare feet and gashed my toe on the grating in the turntable when taking a final bow. From that day forward, every Fantine wore ballet slippers in the curtain call!

In terms of what I took away from the experience?
As someone who has made theatre their career, what do you think of the importance of back-up plans? Do you think they help or hinder a person's chance of success in the industry?

If you need to have a back up plan to feel like you have more control over your life, so be it. But if you really want this, you have to go for it full force. Just find a little something on the side to make some money!

What is the number one piece of advice you would give to young people starting out in this business?

The business can kick your butt, so hold onto the joy! Study, audition, see lots of theatre on student discounts and try and stay balanced.

Finally, will people get to hear you sing any Les Miserables material during your master class?

If there's extra time, maybe..... :-)

When and Where?

May 25th-May 27th in Toronto

BWW Reviews: Soulpepper Stages Hilarious BARBER OF SEVILLE

The Barber of Seville, the fourth show of Soulpepper's 2013 season, opened this past Thursday at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.

Soulpepper's production of The Barber of Seville is a remount of the 1996 Theatre Columbus hit. Michael O'Brien and John Millard have adapted the play by Beaumarchais and the opera by Rossini.

The Barber of Seville follows the love story of Count Almaviva, the young nobleman who goes undercover to pursue, woo and win Rosina, with the help of the cunning and clever rogue Figaro, the Barber of Seville.

Gregory Prest does a fantastic job playing the attractive yet cunning Count Almaviva. We already knew what an incredible actor he is, but he also has a great singing voice to boot. Courtney Ch'ng Lancaster does a really great job as Rosina, the young ward of Don Bartolo, who is played by Oliver Dennis. She plays Rosina with a hint of mischief and has a fine voice. Veteran Soulpepper actors Oliver Dennis and William Webster are really great as the hilarious Don Bartolo and Don Basilio (Rosina's music teacher and Bartolo's confidant), respectively.

But the star of the show is Dan Chameroy as the charming, clever and devious rascal Figaro. Chameroy has an incredible voice, able to tackle all of Figaro's songs with such effortless ease. Figaro plots and schemes on behalf of Almaviva, and Chameroy's cunning smirk and portrayal help to solidify him as the perfect Figaro.

Soulpepper's The Barber of Seville is an entertaining musical comedy which will keep you laughing for most of the show. It starts off with an overture of sorts led by John Millard with musicians playing the banjo, accordion, bass, flute and violin onstage. One of the most hilarious scenes occurs near the end of the first act when all chaos and mayhem ensues, and the hilarity resumes right at the start of the second act with one of Count Almaviva's many disguises.

O'Brien's adaptation of the original Beaumarchais play is quite successful as he combines it with more well-known and newer references, like that of Bugs Bunny, Phantom of the Opera, and he borrows a bit from Dan Hill and Carly Rae Jepsen as well, just to name a few. Millard's music is also wide-ranging, but it draws heavily on Rossini's opera in addition to mingling it with some other familiar tunes.

Ken Mackenzie does a fantastic job with the set design helping it to evoke a taste of Spain by replicating Spanish house settings and gates, and the set itself is quite versatile and portable to help with the quick set changes. I must also commend Victoria Wallace's costume design which aids in giving an authentic feel to the characters and their settings.

I highly recommend Soulpepper's production of The Barber of Seville if you're looking for a hilarious night out at the theatre. This production is filled with great acting and singing and I guarantee you'll be thoroughly entertained and laughing for a good bit for the rest of the evening.

When and Where?

The Barber of Seville

Young Centre for the Performing Arts

On stage now until June 8th, 2013

Tickets are $32 to $68 and can be purchased in person at the box office, by phone at 416 866 8666, or online at www.soulpepper.ca

The third rock musical produced by the Festival in recent years, Tommy will be the biggest musical ever staged at Stratford. The show features massive LED screens and extraordinary automated set pieces that light up, explode, spin and tilt - get a first look below!

Created by The Who's Pete Townshend and Mr. McAnuff, this is the story of a young man who loses his sight, hearing and speech upon witnessing a traumatic act of violence as a child. When he reveals an uncanny talent for the game of pinball, however, he finds himself at the centre of a celebrity cult.

BLITHE SPIRIT Begins Previews at Stratford Festival

A hilarious battle of wits plays out in one of Noël Coward's most celebrated comedies, Blithe Spirit. Directed by long-time Stratford Festival favourite Brian Bedford, the gorgeously designed production started previews on Thursday, May 16, at the Avon Theatre.

Mr. Bedford, whose recent double triumph as director and star of The Importance of Being Earnest thrilled audiences first in Stratford and then on Broadway, returns for his 28th Festival season. Widely regarded as an authority on Coward's work, he has not only directed and acted inBlithe Spirit several times, he also knew the English playwright personally.

"I absolutely worshipped him," says Mr. Bedford. "I thought he was just a magical guy. And of course he was incredibly good company; he spoke with the same kind of wit and original energy that is in his plays."

Set in an exquisite 1940s Georgian style English house, Blithe Spirit centres on Charles, an author who cheekily engages a medium, Madame Arcati, to conduct a séance as research for his latest novel. Things go decidedly not as planned when she inadvertently raises the ghost of his late wife, Elvira, much to the chagrin of his current wife, Ruth. As the only one who can see or hear Elvira, Charles must figure out how to entertain his ethereal house guest without stepping outside of matrimonial bounds. Trying to keep everyone happy, as it turns out, is a hilarious challenge.

"Coward's laser-sharp wit and brilliant dialogue make this a delicious play - one that will serve as a source of joy and amusement within this Festival season," says Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino. "I was delighted when my mentor and friend, Brian Bedford agreed to direct this play and return to the Festival. He is a true master of bringing Coward to life. With an extraordinary cast, sumptuous costumes and outstanding production design, this is sure to be a wildly entertaining, feel-good evening out at the theatre."

The cast features Ben Carlson as Charles Condomine, Michelle Giroux as Elvira Condomine, Seana McKenna as Madame Arcati, Sara Topham as Ruth Condomine, James Blendick as Dr. Bradman, Susie Burnett as Edith and Wendy Thatcher as Mrs. Bradman.

"I'm really looking forward to [this production] because of the company," says Mr. Bedford. "I think it will be the best cast of the play that I've ever had."

The artistic team features Set Designer Simon Higlett, Costume Designer Katherine Lubienski, Lighting Designer Paul Miller, Sound Designer Jim Neil and Stunt Coordinator John Stead.

The Forum, the new festival within the Festival, is a series of activities and events designed to make a visit to Stratford an immersive, all-encompassing cultural experience. Through debates, talks, concerts, comedy nights, hands-on workshops and more, The Forum will offer theatregoers more ways to discover and examine the themes running through this season's productions.

Themes related to Blithe Spirit will be explored through several Forum events, including a Talking Theatre series, in which discussions are led by Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino and Education Consultant Pat Quigley on a variety of topics such as The Dynamics of Marriage,Woman as Stereotype, "Dying is fine, but death..." and Premonitions and the Supernatural, as embodied in many of this season's productions.
