ArtPlace America Donates $350K to Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center and O Cinema

ArtPlace America, one of the nation's largest organizations committed to creative place-making, is investing $350,000 in new grant dollars for culturally-based development and programming in Miami's urban core. The Adrienne Arsht Center has been awarded a $250,000 grant to establish an Office of Neighborhood Development in association with the Town Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (TSNDC), making it one of the first performing arts centers in the country to have an office dedicated to the development of its surrounding community. O Cinema, Miami's premiere venue for independent, foreign, and art films, has been awarded $100,000 for the development of Cine Al Fresco, a sustainable green space and outdoor theater in Wynwood. ArtPlace America selected the organizations from a pool of more than 1,200 applicants.

The grants come as Miami's urban core emerges as one of the most vibrant cultural districts in the Americas, home to major arts institutions, arts-relatEd Galleries and businesses, and educational institutions concentrated in the arts. The allocations are part of ArtPlace America's third cycle of grant awards. All told, the organization has awarded 134 grants to 130 projects in 90 communities and states for a total of $42.1 million.

The Miami-based John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which believes in the power of the arts to engage communities, has been a founding funder of ArtPlace.

"These two investments exemplify the best of Miami's cultural community - with civic leaders coming together to ensure a prosperous future for Miami's cultural center and a small movie house bringing the arts to the surrounding neighborhood," said Dennis Scholl, VP/Arts at Knight Foundation. "Without a doubt, Miamians know the value of vibrant communities, and ArtPlace helps ensure they happen."

The Arsht Center's Office of Neighborhood Development will collaborate with all agencies and organizations that have an impact on downtown Miami's rapidly-changing arts and entertainment district, including Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Florida Department of Transportation, Pérez Art Museum Miami, Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, City of Miami, Miami-Dade County, the Miami Downtown Development Authority, and private property owners in the area. This is the Arsht Center's second ArtPlace grant. In 2011, it received $300,000 that enabled the creation of the TSNDC- a nonprofit created by the Center to lead its neighborhood's transformation. The TSNDC has commissioned an aspirational master plan that envisions a thriving arts district. The new grant will enable the Center with TSNDC to continue to expand on that vision with collaboration from area stakeholders.

"The Adrienne Arsht Center has helped enliven downtown Miami to the tune of billions of dollars in new development and tens of thousands of new residents," said TSNDC Chair Armando Codina. "Miami is now viewed as one of the world's great cities for arts and culture and downtown is leading that rise. This ArtPlace America grant will enable us to commit additional resources for sparking smart development and collaborating with our neighbors."

It's important that the Arsht Center remain at the forefront of our downtown Miami neighborhood's creative evolution," said Mike Eidson, Chairman of the Arsht Center's Board and Treasurer of the Town Square Neighborhood Development Corporation's Board. "We want to get it right the first time and transform this emerging cultural district into a local and global destination everyone in Miami-Dade County can be proud of."

Located in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District, O Cinema will use its ArtPlace grant to create Cine Al Fresco - an initiative in which its outdoor area will be converted into a sustainable green space and "outdoor theater" offering ongoing films, performances, and other events under the stars for the diverse community along Miami's urban core. As part of the Cine Al Fresco programming, O Cinema we will be offering a regular slate of free films throughout the year and collaborating with area artists and cultural organization to showcase performances and events that will add to the vibrancy of Wynwood and the Biscayne corridor.

"Since our inception, we have strived to improve the quality of life of our community through increased access to the cinematic arts. The much-needed green space and on-going outdoor films and events that Cine Al Fresco will create, will help make Wynwood a better place to live, work and visit," said Vivian Marthell, Co-Director of O Cinema "We intend to continue to use film and the arts as a vehicle to not only entertain and educate but as a way of bringing those who come here to revel and the residents who call Wynwood home together as one community."

The 54 organizations that received grants were selected from over 1200 applications. Inquiries came from all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia. Grant amounts range from $750,000 to $33,000 with an average grant size of just over $280,000.

The South Florida Theatre League Announces Summer Theatre Fest

This summer, South Florida audiences will have a chance to see theatre for free, check out new plays in development by South Florida Playwrights, and tell the world what the arts - and theatre - mean to them.

The South Florida Theatre League is inviting Florida theatre patrons to Get in Bed with the Artswith the return of Summer Theatre Fest, sponsored by WLRN.

The 2013 Summer Theatre Fest will mark the introduction of the Summer Theatre Fest Play Reading Series, and the return of Free Night of Theater, an audience development program that has proven to be immensely popular since the League first introduced it.

"Both these programs offer great opportunities for theatres and the League to develop a more meaningful interaction with our community," says South Florida Theatre League Executive Director Andie Arthur.

Free Night of Theater

Theatre Patrons looking to try something new can visit summerfestfreenight.southfloridatheatre.comand enter to win up to three pairs of tickets in two separate windows - one for shows between June 12 and July 15, and the other for shows between July 16 and August 15.

Free Night offers patrons an excellent opportunity to visit a venue they've never been to before, or sample a type of theatre they might not otherwise ever consider. Participating theatres include Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, Fort Lauderdale Children's Theatre, GableStage, Lake Worth Playhouse, Mad Cat Theatre Company, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, Sol Children Theatre, and Storycrafter Studio.

For performances between June 12 and July 15, patrons can enter to win up to three pairs of tickets beginning on May 28, with all entries finalized on June 7. All ticket winners will be notified by email on June 10th.

For performances from July 15 until August 15, patrons can enter to win up to three pairs of tickets beginning on June 24, with all entries finalized on July 8. Winners will be notified by email if they have won tickets on July 10.

The Theatre Communication Groups' Free Night of Theatre was originally introduced as a three city pilot-program in 2005; the program's the goal being to increase public awareness of The National Theatre community, while in turn attracting new and non-traditional audiences to the theatre. During 2011's Free Night of Theater over 400 participating organizations offered more than 55,000 tickets to over 1,800 performances in 19 states. The total value of the tickets offered was estimated at 1.75 million dollars! Historically, over 33% of patrons who attend a show offered at Free Night of Theater come back and buy a ticket at that theatre.

Summer Fest Free Night - the South Florida Theatre League's version of the program, began in 2008. The South Florida Theatre League is grateful to the LA Stage Alliance, the performing arts service organization of Greater Los Angeles, for facilitating the enter-to-win lottery system.

USITT Presents: LED Lighting Training with Chauvet, 6/3

Lighting designers and technicians looking to add LEDs to their theatrical palette should attend the next USITT Presents, a daylong training by Chauvet on June 3 in Miami, Florida.

USITT Presents: How to Blend LEDs with Traditional Fixtures is the topic of the workshop offered by Chauvet and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology at the University of Miami. (Sign up here!)

This will be the third in USITT's recently launched USITT Presents, a series of one- and two-day workshops to provide ongoing training for entertainment designers and technicians at low cost, with help from industry leaders like Chauvet, Meyer Sound and Studio Gear.

Chauvet presenter Ford Sellers will lead the June 3 class on how to transition and replace existing stage lighting with energy-saving LEDs. It will cover LED basics, fixture types, and theatre applications with Lekolites, strips, Fresnel lenses, and cycloramas; as well as design concepts and three hours of hands-on practice with Chauvet tools. The cost - including lunch - is just $50 for USITT members and $25 for student/early career members. (Fees are double for non-members.)

The first two USITT Presents earlier this year -- a one-day Meyer sound mixing class in Nashville in and a two-day Studio Gear HOG 4 training in Milwaukee - both sold out, said USITT Stage Expo Manager Ron Procopio. Meyer has already scheduled another mixing class on Aug. 16 in Berkeley, California, and a second Studio Gear HOG 4 training is in the works, Procopio said.

USITT is working with other companies to offer more training opportunities in audio, lighting, video, automation, and rigging, at cut-rate cost to its 4,000 members, Procopio said.

USITT, the national association for performing arts designers and technicians, offers networking, education, and career advancement opportunities to professional and student members of the industry. USITT's 2013 Annual Conference & Stage Expo drew over 5,000 people from the world of live entertainment to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in March.

Outré Theatre Company has announced its third and final production of its inaugural season, Jonathan Larson's tick, tick...Boom! Directed by Whitcomb, the musical opens on Friday, May 23, 2013 at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center. tick, tick... Boom! runs through June 9th.

Larson, the creator of the Tony and Pulitzer Award winning musical RENT, penned this semi-autobiographical musical which tells the story of an aspiring composer living in SoHo, NYC at the end of the 1980's. Torn between the struggles of trying to achieve his dreams and the siren song of a settled, middle class life; Johnny searches for the courage to risk everything in the pursuit of his art. His girlfriend wants to settle down and raise a family, his best friend is a financially successful executive - - and Johnny waits tables and composes as he strives for his big break.

Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Obie Award for best actor, tick, tick... Boom! follows the process which led to the creation of the international smash hit RENT, and tells the story of chasing after the things that fulfill you.

tick, tick... Boom! stars local talents Mike Westrich as Johnny, Sabrina Gore as Susan, and Jerel Brown as Michael. Musical Direction is by Kristen Long, Assistant Director is Sharyn Peoples and lighting design is by Stefanie Howard. tick, tick... Boom! began its life with Outré as a one night only concert in May 2012 (featuring Westrich and Gore) and the success of that performance led to the company producing this fully realized production.

Outré Theatre Company is a New Theatre Company in South Florida, helmed by Artistic Director Skye Whitcomb and Managing Director Nori Tecosky. Miami's celebrated lgbt contemporary performing arts festival OUT in the TROPICSannounces its fourth season with an adventurous lineup of award-winning performers from New York (and artists direct from Havana making their U.S. debut): June 13 - 16, 2013 at the Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road.

The New World School of the Arts high school theater program closes the season with the poignant The Laramie Project, a play by Moises Kaufman and the Members of the Tectonic Theater Project. Directed by Stuart Meltzer, NWSA will produce the original docu-drama for three performances only.

The production will run tonight and Saturday, May 10 and 11, 2013, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 12, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Fla. Admission: General admission is $12. Tickets can be purchased online at nwsa.mdc.edu.

Patrice Bailey, Dean of Theater at NWSA highlighted, "This play offers an opportunity for our students to connect to a hate crime committed on a young man and to explore the different points of view of a story. It is my hope that our students will become activists of tolerance."

Considered by many to be one of the most startling and honest theatrical experiences in the past 20 years, The Laramie Project depicts the events of October 6th of 1998 when Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died 6 days lateR. Shepard's torture and murder became a watershed historical moment in America that highlighted many of the fault lines in our culture.

Filled with mistaken identities and over-the-top romances, Actors' Playhouse presents the hilarious comedy The Fox on the Fairway from tonight, May 8 - June 2, 2013 at the Miracle Theatre. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast below!

The Fox on the Fairway is a charming screwball adventure about love, life, and man's eternal love affair with ... golf. Written by Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo, Crazy For You), the author hits a hole-in-one with his tribute to the great English farces of the 1930s and 1940s. Two rival country clubs, Quail Valley and Crouching Squirrel, prepare for their annual grudge match. A massive private wager is made between the two CEOs just before the best player switches teams. The Fox on the Fairway is a "tour-de-course" of rapid-fire chip shots and frenzied miscommunications.

Director David Arisco will lead the cast through the water hazards and sand traps of The Fox on the Fairway.

Ken Clement plays Henry Bingham, the agitated CEO of Quail Valley. An Actors' Playhouse fan favorite, Ken is a recipient of the Carbonell Award, Silver Palm Award and the Miami New Times 'Best of...' Award. Actors' Playhouse credits include Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol, 1776, House and Garden, Johnny Guitar, Sherlock's Last Case, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Big Bang, Another Night Before Christmas, Floyd Collins, Oliver!, Urinetown, and most recently Becky's New Car. TV and film credits include I Love You Phillip Morris, Sex Drive, "Burn Notice", "The Glades", "Magic City" and Pain and Gain.

Clay Cartland plays Justin, the highly excitable new male assistant on whom Henry leans to save the day. Clay's South Florida credits include Godspell, Joseph... Dreamcoat (Actors' Playhouse), Deathtrap, Lend me a Tenor (Stage Door), Rock Odyssey (Arsht Center), The Whole Caboodle (Parade Productions), Twentieth Century Way (Carbonell Nomination: Best Ensemble), Body Awareness (Island City Stage), and Song of the Living Dead (Carbonell Nomination: Best Supporting Actor/Silver Palm Award: Outstanding New Talent).

Betsy Graver makes her Actors' Playhouse debut as Louise, Justin's bubble-headed girlfriend who is studying Greek. Graver was most recently seen as W in Lungs at The Theatre at Arts Garage in Delray Beach. Other South Florida credits include "Vanda" in Gablestage's production of Venus in Fur, for which she received a Carbonell nomination for Best Actress, All New People with Zoetic Stage at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Time Stands Still, Motherf**ker With the Hat, Blasted and Farragut North at Gablestage. TV credits include the pilot of Charlie's Angels on ABC and "Magic City" on STARZ.

Todd Allen Durkin plays the rival club president, Dickie, who places the shifty bet for Crouching Squirrel. Durkin can be seen as Doug Feehan in "Magic City" seasons 1 and 2 on STARZ. Other TV credits include: "Burn Notice," "The Glades" and USA's new show "Graceland." Theater credits include A Steady Rain, Bug, Blasted, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, Reasons To Be Pretty, Captiva, Death of a Salesman, Lenny Bruce in Lenny and many more. Todd has been nominated nine times and once awarded the "Best Supporting Actor" Carbonell Award and four times named "Best Actor" by Miami New Times.

Tensions fly when Henry Bingham's wife, learns the massive bet not only involves cash, but her beloved antique shop. Muriel Bingham is played by Actors' Playhouse veteran Margot Moreland who just returned from the California tour of Menopause the Musical, and is excited to be back at AP having performed in numerous productions for the company including her Carbonell Award-winning performances in Ruthless!, Tomfoolery, Heartbeats, and Annie.

Amy McKenna plays Pamela, an overzealous club member that Henry has a crush on. McKenna returns to Actors' Playhouse, having previously appeared in August: Osage County. Other regional credits include Zoetic Stage (All New People, Captiva, and South Beach Babylon), South Beach Comedy Festival (Mad Cat's Shepherd's Pie), The Promethean Theater (A Report on the Banality of Love), and Gulfshore Playhouse (Tartuffe). McKenna will appear as Helen Klein on STARZ's "Magic City" and played Tiffany Ward on "Burn Notice".

The creative team for The Fox on the Fairway includes Set Designer Gene Seyffer, Costume Designer Ellis Tillman, Lighting Designer Patrick Tennent and Sound Designer Alexander Herrin.

Preview performances of The Fox on the Fairway will be held Wednesday and Thursday, May 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. The show will open on Friday, May 10 at 8 p.m. and play through June 2, 2013. Evening performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., with afternoon matinees on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Preview night tickets on the first Wednesday and Thursday are $35. Tickets for weeknights and matinees are $40, and on Friday and Saturday evenings $48. The theatre offers a 10 percent senior discount rate the day of performance and $15 student rush tickets 15 minutes prior to curtain with identification. Discounts are based on availability and exclude Saturday and Sunday.
