SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS to Open at Sierra Rep, 5/31

When dance teacher Michael Minetti first meets his elderly student Lily Harrison in her Florida-coast high rise, it seems pretty clear these two will barely make it past 'Hello,' let alone their first full lesson. Besides their 30-year age difference, they clash at every turn. A former teacher and minister's wife, she's guarded, uptight and suspicious. A former Broadway dancer, he blurts out jokes and insults and swings from glib to desperate to nonchalant in 10 seconds flat. It's fun to watch, but how will they make it through a six-week dance course? That's the hilarious and touching journey that unfolds in Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, a new comedy that opens at Sierra Rep's East Sonora Theatre stage May 31.

What happens, of course, is the music starts - and this unlikely pair find their common language. Through a lesson a week - swing, tango, waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha and contemporary dance - their friendship unfolds. Michael and Lily may grate against each other when the music stops, but eventually they build trust, understanding and a deep bond.

Written by American playwright Richard Alfieri, the show has been a huge international hit. Since its Los Angeles premiere and Broadway opening, it has been translated into 12 languages, with more than 50 productions in over 20 countries. The New York Post called it "A joy to watch," The New York Observer wrote that it is "just the right combination of humor and humility to make you laugh and cry at the same time," and The Hollywood Reporter called it "thoughtful, razor sharp, charming, funny and genuinely moving."

SRT Artistic Director Scott Viets is directing the show, with SRT's Becky Saunders (Church Basement Ladies) as Lily and Los Angeles actor Sean Galuszka as Michael. Each did the show last year - Becky in Sacramento and Sean in Palm Springs.

"I'm looking forward to re-entering the world of Michael Minetti," Galuszka said. "It's great when you can revisit a character and expand on a role... and Michael definitely spells everything out! He's authentic and uninhibited... and that's kind of liberating to play. What I love about him is that he never stays in a mood - he works through them with this craziness. He doesn't mean 80 percent of what he says, he just blurts things out."

But Michael doesn't truly open to Lily until she lets down her guard a bit - and that doesn't happen until they connect through a few dances.

"He finds such a kindred spirit in her," Galuszka said. "They should be polar opposites, but they share a common language and it's a communication of the soul - they both understand that and they need that."

Saunders said she loves the way the friendship unfolds and credits good writing.

"There are a lot of punch lines and just the right amount of angst," she said. "It's not heavy handed. It's kind of a mother-son relationship. They're both lonely souls, they connect and end up loving each other."

Viets said the show is a welcome change of pace for him.

"Since I directed Shipwrecked a couple of years ago, I've wanted the luxury to explore text and relationships in a story without having to worry about creating and teaching production numbers, which usually take up such a huge chunk of rehearsal time," Viets said. "I'm a big fan of this piece - its gentle and comedic approach to two people from different worlds who take the time to cross the bridges necessary to truly understand each other."

Completing the design team are SRT's resident artists: scenic design by Dennis Jones, costume design by Bina Bieker, props by Mercy Sharpe, lighting design by Peter Leibold and stage management by Lia Metz.

SRT's production of Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks is presented with the help of our Season Sponsor, Clarke Broadcasting, Silver Partner, The Union Democrat, and underwriter, The Law Offices of Kate Powell Segerstrom.

Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks opens Friday, May 31 and plays through Sunday, June 23 at SRT's East Sonora Theatre stage, found at 13891 Mono Way.Thursday and Friday performances begin at 7 p.m., Saturday evening performances are at 8 p.m., and Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m. General admission ranges from $26 to $32 depending on the day of the performance, with student, child, senior and group rates available. A special talk back discussion with the cast will be held immediately after the Thursday, June 13 performance.

This show is rated R for language and adult topics. For more information on content and show dates, or to make reservations, call Sierra Rep's box office at (209) 532-3120 or visit Sierra Rep at www.sierrarep.org.

BWW Reviews: Hillbarn Provides A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

It's fitting that Stephen Sondheim wrote "A Little Night Music" as one grand waltz. When Hillbarn Theatre's production of the musical opens, a semi-narrating chorus dances in the waltz and foreshadow the characters and events about to unfold. A young girl observes their dance, following her grandmother's advice to watch the sky for its smiles. We, too, will soon smile at the follies of mankind. We will join the girl, a lively maid and a conservative student as they perceive and comment on those dancing around them.

Director Dennis Lickteig assembles his staging around these observations, resulting in a lovely production with few faults. Sondheim gave the musical a distinct, but slow pace that requires a special something to keep the energy alive. Hillbarn's production comes extremely close to meeting all those requirements with beautiful sets (designed by Robert Broadfoot) evoking the night sky and spotless orchestra. Although some of the acting falls flat and not all of Sondheim's difficult high notes are met, Lickteig has assembled an overall talented cast capable of touching the audience through poignant moments.

You'll see what I mean by mankind's follies when I try to describe the musical's plot. It's rather like a soap opera put to music, only far more beautiful and worthy of our time. Fredrik Egerman, an older man, marries Anne, a woman her late teenage years, but he actually loves actress Desiree Armfeldt, the mistress of Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, whose poor wife is the older sister of Anne's school friend. Meanwhile, Fredrik's son, Henrik, has feelings for Anne, Petra the maid "loves" men, and Desiree's young daughter is under the supervision of her grandmother, who has had plenty of her own trysts with royalty and more in her youth. And of course, perplexity breaks loose when they all end up at the same country house for a crazy-wonderful second act.

Lee Ann Payne carries the emotional weight of the show as Desiree in a standout rendition of the famous "Bring in the Clowns," while Jack Mosbacher exhibits an incredible intensity and an amazing, wide vocal range in his short moments on stage. Christine Macomber wins audiences over with her strict, but romantically sung Leonora Armfeldt, Desiree's mother. Nicolette Norgaard's Anne has a contagious youthful air. Sarah Griner shines in her second act solo, "The Miller's Son." Alicia Teeter brings a sophisticated charm to the Count's wife, while William Giammona adds sufficient humor to the fairly dramatic musical. CameRon Weston has a sweet, calming voice as Fredrik. Mark Enea, Tabitha Tetreault, Maria Mikheyenko, John Rinaldi and Stephanie Case serve as the Greek chorus of sorts, providing gorgeous melodies during scene transitions.

The cast deserves strong kudos for tacking Sondheim's difficult music - difficult, but beautiful and angelic to listeners' ears - a little night music worth observing and listening to.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
Through June 2
Hillbarn Theatre Company
hillbarntheatre.org

Of the six selected plays, three are by Bay Area playwrights Joan Holden, Prince Gomolvilas and Erin Bregman; and three are by New York emerging artists Jiehae Park, Laura Schellhardt and Kimber Lee. Running the gamut from a fever dream in the North/South Korean DMZ to a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Free Speech Movement - each of these plays use bold, beautifully poetic and dramatic language and vivid characters to tear into the very fabric of contemporary political and social upheaval - globally and locally.

Laura Schellhardt -The Comparables; high drama, high stakes, high comdedy - women battle it out at the top of the glass ceiling;

Prince Gomolvilas - The Brothers Paranormal; A Sci-Fi Drama - Thai style. With ghosts, real and imagined.

Jiehae Park- Hannah and the Dread Gazebo; North and South Korea can't stop the wild beasts of the DMZ or a grieving family from venturing into the thicket.

Erin Bregman - Before & After; The After Life. After It All. And Before. Tres metaphysical.

Kimber Lee - brownsville song (b-side for tray); Intensely tragic - the human cost of inner city violence is unfathomable. Laced with gorgeous poetic imagery and dream-like sequences.

Joan Holden - FSM; a musical celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Free Speech Movement, a producing partnership with Oakland's Stagebridge Theatre.

Ray of Light Theatre's INTO THE WOODS Begins 5/31

Ray of Light Theatre (www.rayoflighttheatre.com) will bring Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods to the San Francisco stage this June at The Eureka Theatre. Described as bold, thought-provoking and alarmingly funny, Into the Woods is the type of theatrical experience that will make you think, laugh and leave with a tune in your head and a kick in your step. Featuring a talented cast of local performers and live, on-stage musicians, this mystical story comes to life like never before. We'll continue our season with CARRIE the Musical, opening October 4th at San Francisco's historic and ornate Victoria Theatre.

Into the Woods humorously combines a number of classic fairy tales into one hilarious, touching, over-arching narrative. A baker and his wife are assigned a number of tasks by a nearby witch; only after completing these duties will they be able to bear children. During their quest to fulfill the witches' demands, they encounter Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella and numerous other fairy tale figures. The traditional stories are parodied and altered at will, yet the original fairy tales' sense of wonder and, at times, darkness remains intact. The score, winner of Broadway's Tony Award, includes such songs as Children Will Listen, Giants in the Sky and No One Is Alone.

Ray of Light knows how to mount blockbuster productions, and our 2013 Season will surely go down as our best and most ambitious yet. Past triumphs include wildly successful and critically recognized productions of Sweeney Todd in 2012 (winner of one and nominated for 6 BATCC Awards), The Full Monty (2012), Assassins in 2011 (winner of 8 BATCC Awards), Jerry Springer the Opera in 2010 (nominated for 9 BATCC Awards), BABY: A Musical in 2010 (winner of 6 BATCC Awards), The Who's Tommy in 2009 (winner of 6 BATCC Awards),The Rocky Horror Show in 2008 (nominated for 5 BATCC Awards) as well as Bat Boy: The Musical in 2005 and 2006 (named a Top 10 show of the year by The SF Bay Guardian).

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.Music by Rodgers, Richard; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse; Suggested by `The Trapp Family Singers` by Maria Augusta Trapp

The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.Music by Rodgers, Richard; Book by Oscar Hammerstein II; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

The romantic and achingly beautiful A Little Night Music deals with middle- aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman's search for love. His teenage trophy wife, Anne refuses to have sex with him. As a result, Fredrik's eyes begin to wander as he searches for meaning and fulfillment elsewhere. Sophisticated, literate and stylish, A Little Night Music is also disarmingly warm, funny, charming and very human. Its well-constructed book features strong and memorable characters. The lilting, Ravel-inspired score includes songs Remember and Everyday a Little Death and ends with the haunting Send in the Clowns.

After transfixing audiences across the globe and receiving unanimous critical acclaim worldwide, National Theatre of Scotland's revolutionary production of Black Watch makes its highly anticipated Bay Area premiere. Inspired by interviews with soldiers who served in Iraq with Scotland's nearly 300-year-old Black Watch regiment, this hauntingly powerful depiction of war is so inventive and groundbreaking in scope that it demands a completely unique performance venue-and will take over the long-dormant Drill Court at San Francisco's historic Mission Armory. Splicing together exquisitely deployed stagecraft, from choreographed marches and Scottish ballads to searing video news footage, Black Watch captures the layered state of being at war, from moment to gripping moment. A transformative theatrical event you don't want to miss, Black Watch delivers a visceral, unforgettable experience.

Performances of Black Watch will take place in the Drill Court at San Francisco's Mission Armory, located at 333 14th Street (between Mission and Valencia).

Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.Music by Rodgers, Richard; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Book by Oscar Hammerstein II & Joshua Logan; Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel

Evita: Ambitious and magnetic, she's a starlet at 22, the president's mistress at 24, and First Lady at 27, only to die of cancer at 33. Although unscrupulous on her scramble to the top, once there, Evita advocated and championed workers' and women's rights, leaving a political legacy about which opinions still vary.

Sarah Ruhl and Les Waters, acclaimed collaborators who created Eurydice, In the Next Room (or the vibrator play) and Three Sisters, return to Berkeley Rep with another tale of love and longing. Dear Elizabeth follows the beautiful and bittersweet friendship between Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell. Across oceans and continents, across three decades, these esteemed poets found a true marriage of minds in their eloquent correspondence. Dubbed the Dickinson and Whitman of the 20th century, they traded hundreds of vibrant, witty and passionate letters that now spring to life on stage. This West Coast premiere paints an intimate portrait of two extraordinary-and quite ordinary-lives, told anew by two of the finest artists of our time.

All My Sons tells the story of Joe Keller (Craig Christiansen), a self-made businessman who lives a comfortable life with his wife, Kate (Kristine Ann Lowry), and returning war veteran son, Chris (Francis Serpa), in a suburban middle American neighborhood. They have only one sadness in their lives - the loss of their other younger son, Larry, who went missing in World War II. While Kate still believes Larry is coming back, Chris believes otherwise and would like her to give up that hope so he can marry Ann (Amber Collins Crane), Larry's former fiancée and the daughter of Steve Deever, Joe's former business partner.
The San Francisco Early Music Society Announces Upcoming Season

The San Francisco Early Music Society (SFEMS), the nation's leading organization for the advancement of historically informed performance of early music, is proud to announce its 37th annual concert season, featuring six concerts by some of the most respected early music professionals from around the country: Archetti Baroque String Ensemble, Farallon Recorder Quartet, Galax Quartet, Magnificat, Ostraka, and Quicksilver.

Highlights of SFEMS' 2013-14 season include the West Coast premiere of Quicksilver. Based in New York, the seven-piece ensemble has accumulated a raft of accolades since it formed in 2009. For SFEMS Quicksilver will perform a program organized around the early sonata: music of Castello, Fontana, Merula, and Weckmann.

Next year, in a program focused on the avant-garde of 16th-century Ferrara, SFEMS for the first time will also present two works of new music. Co-commissioned by the Galax Quartet and SFEMS is the world premiere of David Jaffe's Eight O's in Woolloomooloo. The Galax Quartet has pioneered in performing and commissioning new works for early instruments, an interest promoted by founding member Roy Whelden, himself a composer. The program will include music written for Galax by Joseph Schwantner as well as David Jaffe.

"Our presentation of new music this season is a definite first," says SFEMS Executive Director Harvey Malloy. "But it is something we have been interested in for quite a while. Many of the individuals who have been drawn to SFEMS and our mission of advancing early music have also been at the forefront of jazz and new music explorations. There is a powerful affinity between early music and new music - namely the possibility for creative improvisation - which the program for the Galax Quartet beautifully showcases."

Early and new music join forces throughout this season. Starting in October SFEMS and the Jazzschool in Berkeley will present monthly Sunday afternoon concerts of early music. Every concert will feature local musicians performing on period instruments and featuring the improvisational common thread that links early music and jazz. The first concert in the series on October 6, 2013 at 4:30pm features improvisational geniuses Shira Kammen and Peter Maund. For more information, visit sfems.org.
