Bathhouse & SPT to Present DRACULA, 7/5-7

The Bathhouse Ensemble (BE) and Seattle Public Theater (SPT) are proud to present Steven Dietz's adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic tale of horror and sensuality Dracula, directed by Ensemble member Simon Irving, running July 5-7, 2013 at the historic Bathhouse Theater on Green Lake.

"I'm excited about [Dietz's] Dracula because of the element of true melodrama that underlines it," says director Simon Irving. "At its core, Dracula (as a story) is a huge, outsized, sensual romance. I want our version to stay true to that core, drawing out the drama and above all the tragedy of its central figure. There's a seriousness and honesty within all of the characters that informs every decision they make. The intensity of these themes makes this script difficult for the youth program to tackle, but BE's group of young adult actors are perfect for this show."

Dracula features the work of Ensemble members Andrew Marques, Audrey Howell, Aviva Wynn, Brooks Donohue, Jessa Lowe, Maggie Williams, Murren Kennedy, Peter Durning, Will Lavely, Zach Sanders, Max Pagel, Erica Thomas, Kyna Shilling, and Francesco D'Aniello.

Dracula performs July 5 at 7:00pm, July 6 at 2:00pm and 7:00pm, and July 7 at 2:00pm. Tickets are free, with a suggested donation of $5-$10 to support the Ensemble. Tickets are available 30 minutes before showtime, with festival seating.

The Bathhouse Ensemble is a collective of young, dedicated theater artists who are alumni of SPT's education program. They are committed to independently producing challenging plays that actively draw in audiences; being an actor's studio for the continued training of the ensemble; fostering new works and new interpretations; and continually stretching their own capabilities and the minds of the audience and community.

BWW Reviews: Clever Confusion in DOGG'S HAMLET AND CAHOOT'S MACBETH from Sound Theatre Company

I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again, you practically have to take a masters class in whatever Tom Stoppard is writing about in order to fully get his plays. Whether is be Shakespeare, Czech History or Mathematics it helps to have some kind of advance knowledge before you sit down. Having said that, while "Dogg's Hamlet and Cahoot's Macbeth" definitely had me saying "Huh?" a few times, what it amounts to is a clever, funny and engaging look at language and power.

Typically done together (although I cannot imagine them making as much sense apart), these two plays by Stoppard explore what it is to be understood through language. In "Dogg's Hamlet" we're in a boy's Preparatory school in the UK in 1978. But the folks in this school speak a language known as Dogg that utilizes ordinary English words but assigns completely different meanings to them. The boys (Fox Rain Matthews, Matt Fulbright, Noah Duffy and Corey Spruill) are putting up an abridged version of Hamlet, which is in a foreign language to them, English. Enter the character Easy (Luke S. Walker) who just wants to deliver some building supplies for the stage but finds himself unable to communicate with the lads. Sound confusing? Well, it is. But if you pay attention you'll be able to glom onto a little of the language and understand exactly what they're trying to say. Then in "Cahoot's Macbeth", a troupe of persecuted actors are trying to perform a production of the Scottish play in a living room in communist Czechoslovakia in 1978 but the head of the secret police (Robert Hinds) bursts in to stop their "subversive actions". All seems lost until Easy shows up again now speaking Dogg that the actors all pick up on but completely confounds the police. As I said, I ended Act One somewhat confused. Not only from the language but why this story was necessary. But it feeds nicely into Act Two and only illuminates the lack or abundance of understanding of people for each other depending on their perspective.

The play does get a little convoluted at times but the wonderful ensemble cast does their best to keep the chaos at bay or at least controlled. Matthews, Fulbright, Duffy and Walker pull off some insanely fun physical comedy in Act One (only to repeat and intensify it with everyone in Act Two). Walker especially displays some uproariously fun comedic timing with his bewildered deliveryman. And Duffy couldn't be more charming as the little schoolboy playing all the women of "Hamlet". Fulbright also turns in a stunning Macbeth in the play within the play in Act Two along with an extremely powerful Lady Macbeth from Elinor Gunn. And Hinds' Inspector couldn't be more deliciously evil as he chides and cajoles his way through the members of this band of "troublemakers".

Like most of Stoppard's plays, these definitely require some work on the part of the audience but also like most of his plays, that work pays off in the end.

BWW Reviews: STAGEright's ALL IN THE TIMING Filled with Quirky Laughs

The great thing about a show with a series of short plays is that if the current short play just isn't working for you, wait ten minutes and you'll be on to the next one. The greater thing about David Ives' "All in the Timing" is that most of his short plays included are gems. And the greaterer thing about STAGEright's current production of "All in the Timing" is that, for the most part (there was really only one that left me saying "Huh?"), the cast and directors have woven together such a tight and well paced show that there's bound to be something for everyone and plenty of laughs for all.

There are actually 14 plays in all in Ives' collection known as "All in the Timing" but STAGEright has chosen their favorite seven to present to us. Ranging from new languages to literary monkeys to variations on romance, the plays all take a look at somewhat ordinary ideas from a new angle. And what STAGEright has done is doled them out to seven different directors (Emily Harvey, Kyle James Traver, Jessica Askew, Mok Moser, Matt Giles, Brendan Mack, and Zandi Carlson) to infuse their takes on them yet keeping them all under the guise of taking place in a laboratory as the scientists study their subjects in these absurd situations. And for the most part that conceit works for the plays. Occasionally it's a stretch but with a little willing suspension of disbelief, that every theatergoer should have, they work. There was just that one that, as I said, left me wanting as they vehemently tried to cram this square peg of a conversation into the round hole of a lab setting which only served to dilute the story it was trying to convey with gimmicks. Which is a shame as if just kept simple, that play can be one of the funniest.

The eight member cast who all play multiple roles is sublime. Ty Bonneville, Andrew Galteland, Katie Kuntz, Adam Minton, Andrew Murray, Eric Olson, Kacey Shiflet, and Amberlee Williams each combine to form a beautiful cohesive whole that keeps the flow of the show going even as, sometimes cumbersome, set changes are being made. And it's that cohesion that makes the show and the conceit of the lab work, for the most part. And while all wonderful I have to note a few bits of incredible up there. Minton seems to have enough character and range inside him for 12 actors as he gave very different voices to each of his characters. Olson's nervous first dater is adorable but only serves to show off the hilarity of his swaggering lothario. Shiflet is a powerhouse as she goes from meek girl on a date to hyper intense scientist with his laser focused ode to a typewriter. Murray also manages his multiple characters well whether it be nervous partygoer or hilariously erudite chimp. And I have to comment on how great his chimp was as he was able to convey volumes with no words at all. And Kuntz practically walked off with every scene she was in as she had the audience in stitches with her pre show antics, dominated a golf game and turned in a stunning retelling of "Of Mice and Men" using only the letter "K". And special kudos to director Brendan Mack whose piece was my favorite of the evening as he managed to convey it through his actors with such laser focused intent.

With a wonderfully simple and practical yet slightly odd set from Brandon Estrella and an amusing sound design from Mack the show definitely knows how to bring the fun. And for someone choosing to stay indoors on these lovely (almost) summer evenings, fun is what you need.

"All in the Timing" from STAGEright performs at Richard Hugo House through June 29th. For tickets or information visit them online at www.seattlestageright.org.

His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe!Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, SWEENEY TODD nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor: audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next.At the show's core is a challenging score of epic proportion with two tasty tour de force roles in Sweeney and his comic female accomplice Mrs. Lovett. Although it has been extremely popular with opera companies and in concert presentation, SWEENEY TODD is equally effective as an intimate chamber musical.

Broadway's greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville.A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is a non-stop laugh-fest in which Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan named Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors, and a showgirl or two. This unforgettable, hysterical musical allows a terrific ensemble of comedic actors to shine--"something for everyone, a comedy tonight!"

Lyle Candell is confident that he's an exceptional person, so where the hell is his fame and fortune? Thirty-five years into his perplexingly normal life, he discovers that his unexceptional childhood nemesis has achieved Christian superstardom as the revered televangelist, Hal O'Luyah. Lyle is spurred to action by this cosmic injustice and sets out to claim his deserved share of the pulpit. With the help of his status-seeking girlfriend and some mischievous guardian angels, Lyle finds success is just a sin or two away once he dedicates his life to "Jaaayssusssss!".

This international smash-hit may be the most popular musical in the world. In 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean's adopted daughter. His world-view shattered, Javert commits suicide, and Valjean at last attains the peace he has sought for so long.Epic, grand and uplifting, LES MISÃ?RABLES packs an emotional wallop that has thrilled audiences all over the world. The sung-through pop opera is ideal for a cast of exceptional singers and overflows with melodies that are already standards. A spectacle on Broadway and in London, LES MISÃ?RABLES is equally effective with a minimal set; it is its powerful affirmation of the human spirit that has made LES MISÃ?RABLES a popular masterpiece.

It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent '60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus' meteor-like rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ's final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.Lyrics by Tim Rice; Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

THE LAND IS ALWAYS KNOWN Debuts at On The Boards' NW New Works Festival 2013 Tonight

The Satori Group in collaboration with The Bengsons, a New York City based musical duo, will be debuting work from their new piece The Land Is Always Known at On The Boards' Northwest New Works Festival tonight, June 15 and tomorrow, June 16.

The piece explores a history of violence, abuse, hurt, and escape through song and movement, following the journey of Phoebe as she returns to the place her family comes from, generations before, to find the source of her own understanding of hurt. At the heart of our investigation is this: How do you move on from violence? How might we confront past wrongs without being consumed by them? How can you heal without erasing or negating?

The Land Is Always Known sets out to make a new kind of immigrant story. What if we consider ourselves first generation non-violent? We are refugees from a culture of violence. We have one foot stuck in the old way as we struggle to look for a new. What stories might we tell ourselves to help disrupt a cycle of hurt and hurting?

NW New Works is the first step in the development of The Land Is Always Known. Following the performance at On the Boards, the Satori Group will tour this current incarnation to the Risk/Reward Festival in Portland from June 21-23. Over the next year, the Satori Group and The Bengsons will present other workshops and performances of the piece as it is expanded into a full length production.

Directed by Caitlin Sullivan and written by Spike Friedman with music by The Bengsons, the production features the work of: Devin Bannon, LoraBeth Barr, Abigail Bengson, Shaun Bengson, Kent Cubbage, Liza Curtiss, Dan Davidson, Quinn Franzen, Spike Friedman, Lauren Hester, Kristyne Hughes, Rachel Levens, Alex Matthews, Sarah Sanders, Molly Sides, Amanda Stoddard, Kate Sumpter, Carol Thompson, Montana Tippet, Lindsey Valitchka, and Greta Wilson.

The Satori Group is a regionally recognized and critically acclaimed theatre ensemble, working primarily in the development of new work. We present public performances of Satori productions on an annual basis, typically with 1-2 large-scale mounted productions per year, and several (3-5) smaller scale public performances of in-development work. These smaller-scale performances can range from in-process showings for an invited audience, to ticketed events showcasing a project that may go on to receive a fuller large-scale production.
