THRILLER LIVE BRASIL Debuts in São Paulo

Last weekend, on May 10th, THRILLER LIVE BRASIL premiered in São Paulo. After a sucessfull season in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, capital of the country, the musical performs at Credicard Hall, the biggest concert room of Latin America, until the end of june.

THE LION KING Wins Brazilian Audience

THE LION KING premiered in Brazil on March 28th and has already become a huge success. So far, the company performed for 40 times with all sessions practically sold out. The musical is such a hit that has already surpassed, in this beggining of the season, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, the largest musical performed in Brazil until now.

Based on the 1994 film, Disney's LION KING tells the story of Simba, a lion that lives in the african savannah and has to face the jungle's dangers after his father's death.

Playing at 'Teatro Renault', in São Paulo, the musical is produced by T4F (Time For Fun) and presents Tiago Barbosa as Simba, César Mello as Mufasa, Josi Lopes as Nala and Osvaldo Mil as Scar. The role of Rafiki is played by the South African Phindile Mkhize, who has performed in several LION KING productions around the world.
The Brazilian version of the songs were made by Gilberto Gil, a famous Brazilian musician. At the musical's press conference, on March 25th, Tim Rice, the original lyricist, talked about the portuguese version: 'Here we have Gilberto Gil which is fantastic. It's a great honor for us to have such a great distinguished writer working on THE LION KING'.

With an estimated production of 50 million reais (25 million dolars), the musical has attracted people from all parts of Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro and the country side of São Paulo.

THE LION KING performs in São Paulo until the end of 2013 and can be extended through 2014.

BILLY ELLIOT to Play Brazil in August

Universal Stage Productions, Working Title Films, Old Vic Productions and NETworks Presentations, LLC announced today, in association with Time for Fun (T4F), that the North American Tour of Billy Elliot the Musical will travel to South America for a limited three-week engagement from Friday, August 2, to Sunday, August 18, at Credicard Hall in São Paulo, Brazil. Based on the international smash-hit film and featuring music by Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall, direction by Stephen Daldry and choreography by Peter Darling Billy Elliot the Musical has earned critical acclaim around the world and was the winner of ten 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

"We continue to be amazed by the show's success in London's West End and the warm embrace it has received around the world. This is the first time Billy Elliot the Musical will visit South America, and we very much look forward to bringing it to the people of São Paulo, Brazil," says Producer Eric Fellner, Working Title Films Co-Chairman.

Billy Elliot the Musical is the joyous celebration of one boy's journey to make his dreams come true. THE LION KING Makes South American Premiere in Brazil Tonight

Disney's THE LION KING makes its South American premiere in São Paulo, Brazil. Presented by T4F (Time For Fun), the production opens tonight, March 26th, 2013 at the Teatro Renault. THE LION KING in São Paulo marks two firsts: the largest stage musical ever presented in Brazil and the first time the show has been performed in Portuguese. With this Brazilian production, THE LION KING will mark its 21st production worldwide, having played on six continents.

On March 24th, THE LION KING surpassed CATS to become the longest run in Japanese musical history, when the production celebrated its 8,450th performance in Japan. The record-breaking number combines the productions in Tokyo and the Japan national tour. Presented by Shiki Theatre Company, the Tokyo production opened on December 20th, 1998. With the national tour, which opened on April 18th 1999, the cumulative gross and attendance in Japan total $622 million and 10.5 million, respectively.

As it enters its 16th year, THE LION KING remains ascendant, and one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, 21 global productions have been seen by more than 68 million people and, cumulatively, run a staggering 96 years. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), THE LION KING is only the second show in history to generate five productions worldwide running 10 or more years. The resulting sound of THE LION KING is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award-winning song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" to the haunting ballad "Shadowland."

BWW Reviews: HOW TO SUCCEED Opens in Rio!

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING (Como Vencer na Vida sem fazer Força) opened in Rio de Janeiro with a revised Brazilian production, directed by top musical theatre directors Claudio Botelho and Charles Moeller. Mr. Botelho and Mr. Moeller will soon reach the London West End and Broadway with BLACK ORPHEUS, produced by American producer Stephen C. Byrd. HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING is the 32nd show in their winning careers. Mr. Botelho is also the Brazilian translator of shows like LES MISERABLES, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, MISS SAIGON, MY FAIR LADY, THE KING AND I and ADDAMS FAMILY, to name a few.

O hoje já lendário diretor Arthur Laurents, autor de Gypsy e West Side Story, criou uma expressão curiosa mas perfeitamente adequada para definir o que é absolutamente necessário para se exercer com competencia e sucesso o ofício de se criar Teatro Musical: é preciso ter o musical "in the bones" (literalmente "nos ossos"). Ele mesmo tentou explicar: "O que exatamente "in the bones" significa? Bem, não podeMos Definir com precisão. Na verdade é uma mistura de intuição ritmica e sonora, uma mão invisível mas extremamente inspirada e competente que atravessa o trabalho como um todo, mas que também está presente em cada segundo de uma cena, seja ela um numero musical (cantado ou dançado) ou não. Não é uma habilidade, não se consegue obte-la com experiencia e, acredito, nem mesmo pode ser aprendida ou muito menos ensinada. Na verdade "in the bones" é um instinto. Um instinto que sai do palco e chega à platéia, se entranha nas paredes da sala de espetáculo e pode chegar até lá fora, na calçada, quando antes de ingressarmos no teatro, olhamos com encantamento as marquises iluminadas de determinados musicais. E instinto é instinto. Nasce conosco."

Talvez essa seja a definição mais acertada para explicar a Excelencia dos espetáculos apresentados pela dupla Moeller e Botelho em nossos palcos. É evidente que a qualidade do Teatro Musical que se faz no Brasil hoje é, felizmente, um fato. Ótimos desempenhos de consagrados atores e atrizes, jovens interpretes com qualidades indiscutíveis, coreografos inspirados, diretores que dão o melhor de si, de suas experiencias e vivencias, para realizar um bom trabalho. O público gosta na maioria das vezes. E comparece. Mas sou forçado a admitir, sem faltar ao respeito com aqueles que lutam com coragem e talento para empreender o musical no Brasil ,que os espetáculos assinados por Moeller e Botelho tem sempre esse diferencial. Um diferencial que começa pela tradução (ou dramaturgia no caso, por exemplo, de "7- O Musical"), prossegue na concepção geral do trabalho, na escolha de sua equipe de criação, seus atores, cantores, bailarinos, avança envolvendo à platéia e (por que não?) termina (ou se inicia) na calçada, quando chegamos ao teatro.

Charles Moeller ( que no ano passado, em minha opinião, foi responsável pelo melhor trabalho de direção apresentado no Rio de Janeiro, incluindo teatro musical ou não, "Milton Nascimento-Nada será como Antes") tem o instinto nato, absoluto, de fazer com que até um simples aperto de mão em cena seja teatro musical e dos melhores. Um exemplo: é memorável o tratamento cinematográfico que Moeller confere à "Um Casal" ( "Happy to keep his Dinner Warm"), fazendo com que a protagonista Rosemary seja transportada num piscar de olhos do emprego para o "lar doce lar" dos seus sonhos (no caso a pacata cidade de New Rochelle da letra original). A habilidade com que ele também lida com pontuações sonoras e rítmicas no todo do espetáculo, se valendo delas inclusive para valorizar o desenvolvimento e características dos personagens, é uma delícia à parte. Afinal, foi exatamente no início dos anos 60 (quando "HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS" estreou) que os diretores e coreógrafos da Broadway começaram a exigir a presença de um pianista nos ensaios de texto, justamente para que uma nova linguagem de encenação fosse explorada e cristalizada. George Abbott, considerado o decano de uma nova dinâmica para se colocar num palco uma peça musical, para não perder tempo, preferia dirigir com uma pianola em suas mãos permitindo que os orquestradores sentados a seu lado, prontamente colocassem na pauta o que dali para frente seria parte essencial do espetáculo. Charles materializa assim, no seu trabalho, um rodamoinho de brilhantes fogos de artifício teatrais, pontuando a sátira, exaltando com brilhantismo o "over", colocando no palco o "stacatto" necessário para fazer de COMO VENCER NA VIDA SEM FAZER FORÇA uma grande e memorável festa. Cumpre aqui mencionar a valiosa colaboração do elegante e detalhado cenário de Rogerio Falcão, da excelente direção musical de Paulo Nogueira, dos INESQUECÍVEIS figurinos de Marcelo Pies, do visagismo inspirado e precioso de Beto Carramanhos, da competente iluminação de Paulo Cesar Medeiros e do trabalho mais uma vez assombroso desse verdadeiro Mestre da Coreografia de Teatro Musical que é Alonso Barros. Zaida Valentim (regencia), Marcelo Claret (design de som) e tantos outros profissionais, dentro e fora do palco, envolvidos no projeto, também são dignos de muitos aplausos.

Claudio Botelho mergulha no texto de Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock e Willie Gilbert com uma saudável falta de pudor, tornando a matéria prima com que o diretor e os atores trabalharam, numa comédia irresistível, irônica, inteligente e inspirada. Suas "rebinbocas" e sua "pafafusetas" são absolutamente geniais como são todas as soluções encontradas por sua tradução para trazer 1961 até aos nossos dias, sem trair em momento algum o espírito da obra original. E, literalmente, QUE SUSTO agradável são as suas versões! Que intricado e inteligente jogo de palavras Claudio conseguiu transmitir mais uma vez à sua platéia, com métrica acertada, humor na medida certa e rimas impensáveis e impecáveis que só demonstram a diferença que existe quando alguem de talento inquestionável assume uma tarefa tão difícil e responsável quanto essa. "In the bones", sem dúvida.

No elenco, Letícia Colin é uma Rosemary adorável, Andre Loddi um Bud Frump hilariante e magnético e Gottsha confirma, como Smitty, o seu lugar como uma das melhores atrizes-cantores do musical que se faz hoje no Brasil. Ada Chaseliov, Leo Wainer, Patau (excelente!), Cássio Pandolfi e Luiz Nicolau tem, cada um, o seu momento de demonstrar competencia, experiencia e talento.

Adriana Garambone é uma das donas da noite, com uma atuação em que demonstra observação e senso crítico absolutamente admiráveis. Se estivéssemos na Broadway, Adriana hoje já estaria consagrada pela imprensa por ter criado uma Heddy La Rue definitiva, absoluta e inigualável. É fantástica a facilidade com que seu desempenho se aproxima do imaginário de um humor essencialmente brasileiro sem se afastar, em momento algum, da composição (eu diria sofisticadíssima) de uma "stupid hooker" da antiga rua 42, nascida no leste do Bronx e que, por um genial golpe de sorte, acaba como secretária executiva na Madison Avenue. Um trabalho magistral.

Luiz Fernando Guimarães: ponto. Deus! Como eu estou me lamentando agora por não ter acompanhado mais de perto a trajetória no teatro desse ator simplesmente excepcional! Para Luiz Fernando, o palco é a sua sala. A platéia, seus convidados. E com que espontaneidade e talento ele nos recebe! Assistir um ator de seu quilate e presença é um privilégio que não vou mais me privar. Seu J.B. Biggley é um show de teatralidade, competência (também no canto e na dança) e autoridade. E quando menciono "autoridade" me refiro àquela que só os primeiros e grandes atores atores possuem. Bravo!

Por outro lado,testemunhar o surgimento de Gregorio Duvivier no teatro musical, interpretando um dos mais importantes protagonistas da dramaturgia norte americana do seculo vinte ( é bom lembrar que o texto teatral de HOW TO SUCEED ganhou um Premio Pulitzer), deixou de ser uma preocupante expectativa para se tornar, de cara, um grande prazer. Com que talento, simpatia e humor ele dá vida a seu Finch, conquistando o publico logo na primeira cena, cantando muitíssimo bem as canções de Frank Loesser e executando com precisão e vitalidade a intricada (por isso talvez tão maravilhosa) partitura coreográfica de Alonso Barros. Gregorio é o próprio "Macunaíma da Broadway", um "arlequim dos musicais" (como define Charles Moeller o personagem) e " um anti-herói das minorias dando rasteiras nos que estão por cima" (citando novamente Moeller). No palco ele permite que se materialize, ante nossos olhos, um oportunista adorável, um grande Ser Teatral, um duende endiabrado que traz no corpo, nos gestos e na alma a chama viva da Comédia. Gregorio Duvivier é TEATRO dos pés à cabeça e que os Deuses o iluminem na carreira admirável que tem pela frente.

Completam o elenco os tambem maravilhosos Carol Ebeken, Cristiana Pompeo, Joane Mota, Kotoe Karasawa, Renata Ricci, Nadia Nardini (bem vinda novamente aos palcos do teatro musical brasileiro!), Fabio Porto, Guilherme Logullo, Helcio Mattos, Leandro Luna, Leo Wagner e Patrick Amstalden.

Importante: obrigatório para for assistir COMO VENCER (ou quiser conhecer TUDO sobre sua gênesis e história), é a leitura do excelente artigo do publicitário, produtor e pesquisador de teatro musical Claudio Erlichman, que está disponível no site MOELLER & BOTELHO ou no programa do espetáculo, encontrado no Teatro Oi Casa Grande.

COMO VENCER NA VIDA SEM FAZER FORÇA é programa obrigatório para a platéia que tem (como disse Arthur Laurents) o teatro musical "in the bones". Preparem seus corações para a felicidade, para o prazer, para o encanto que a tradicional comedia musical americana pode de verdade proporcionar. E, acreditem, o riso muitas vezes alem de entreter, também emociona. E como!

Luis Salgado will be associate director for In The Heights in Brazil

2008 Tony Awards winning musical In The Heights will be translated into Portuguese for its first Brazilian production, directed by Wolf Maya and with recently announced associate director Luis Salgado, adding to his position as choreographer and consultant on the production.

Ricardo Marques and his Production Company 4ACT PRODUÇÕES ARTÍSTICAS will present the Brazilian premier in Rio De Janiero on July 6th followed by a second opening in Sao Paulo in September directed by Wolf Maya and musical direction by Paulo Nogueira.

Also joining the production in Brazil, as part of the Salgado Production's creative and consulting team is lighting designer Joel Silver (Peter and The Starcatcher), stage management consultant Heather Hogan (In The Heights -Broadway) and original In The Heights cast member Afra Hines (Ghost) assistant choreographer. This is the second international production that Luis and the Salgado Productions team will work on together, Silver and Hogan were part of the creative team of Candela "Fuerza y Pasion" that premeired in Lima, Peru in 2011.

In The Heights opened on Broadway on March 9th, 2008 and won 4 Tony awards including Best Original Musical and Best Choreography. It tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York's Washington Heights neighborhood - a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It's a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. With music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, and conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, In The Heights originally directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler.

CHAPLIN Will Open in Brazil in 2014

The new musical CHAPLIN will be produced in São Paulo, Brazil at the Teatro Procópio Ferreira in April 2014 by Chaim XYZ Produções. The current Broadway production will play its final performance at the Barrymore Theatre on Sunday, January 6, 2013.

CHAPLIN, a new musical depicting the life of film icon Charlie Chaplin, with music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis and book by three-time Tony Award-winner Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Christopher Curtis, opened on Broadway on Monday, September 10, 2012. Previews began Tuesday, August 21, 2012. Warren Carlyle (Finian's Rainbow; Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway) directs and choreographs the production.

As previously announced, the entertainment agency AWA Partners (www.AWA-Partners.com) is putting together a US national tour of CHAPLIN that will launch in the fall of 2014, with plans for an international world tour to follow. The CHAPLIN Original Broadway Cast Recording is now available digitally and will be in retail stores beginning January 8, 2013 and on sale in the Barrymore Theatre.

The Broadway production of CHAPLIN stars Rob McClure in the title role, and also features Jim Borstelmann (Alf Reeves), Jenn Colella (Hedda Hopper), Ethan Khusidman (Usher), Erin Mackey (Oona O'Neill), Michael McCormick (Sennett, McGranery, Emcee), Christiane Noll (Hannah Chaplin), Zachary Unge r (Young Charlie, Jackie) and Wayne Alan Wilcox (Sydney Chaplin).

The creative team for the Broadway production of CHAPLIN includes scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, costume design by Amy Clark and Martin Pakledinaz, lighting design by Ken Billington, sound design by Scott Lehrer and Drew Levy, and projection design by Jon Driscoll. Bryan Perri is the musical director.

The brand new 24-person musical reveals the man behind the legend, the undeniable genius that forever changed the way America went to the movies.
