THE PARENT TRAP Set for Orpheum's Summer Movie Series 6/28

The Orpheum's Summer Movie Series and The Memphis Redbirds will team up to present "Scout Day" at the Orpheum's 1:30 PM matinee showing of Walt Disney's 1961 family classic, THE PARENT TRAP on Friday, June 28.

Scout Day will include a special appearance by Rockey the Rockin' Redbird, the official team mascot of the Memphis Redbirds; exclusive admission discounts to Girl and Boy Scout troops, day cares, and summer camp groups who purchase in advance; and an opportunity for Girl and Boy Scouts to enter to win a family pack of four tickets to a Redbirds game as well as a limited edition Redbirds patch.

"Rockey can't wait to see all of his fans at the Orpheum," says Redbirds Marketing Manager Erin O'Donnell. "This is a great opportunity for Scouts, campers, and their families to meet one of Memphis' most beloved mascots and take in a funny - and heartwarming - feature all in one incredible family outing."

Hayley Mills pulls double duty in the 1961 version of Walt Disney's THE PARENT TRAP as she plays twins who, unknown to their divorced parents, meet at a summer camp. Products of single parent households, they switch places (surprise!) in order to meet the parent they never knew, and then plot to rekindle their parents' forgotten flame. This film is rated G and is appropriate for General Audiences.

Rockey the Rockin' Redbird, the official team mascot of the Memphis Redbirds, will be at the Orpheum Theatre to sign autographs and take pictures starting at 12:30 PM. Known locally as 'Knoxville's Queen of Comedy,' The Outrageous Raz has been entertaining throughout the southeast for over 30 years, and is recognized as one of the best drag queen comedians in Knoxville history. This will be a variety show with stand-up, a few songs, and audience participation. It promises to be one show where you will never know what is going to happen next!

Blue Day to Open for John Wayne's THE SEARCHERS at The Orpheum, 6/28

The Orpheum's Summer Movie Series welcomes back Blue Day, a local Bluegrass staple, for a special pre-movie concert on Friday, June 28 at 6:30 PM before the 7:00 PM showing of John Wayne in THE SEARCHERS.

Formed in 2008, Blue Day is Ed Richter (banjo), Rick Crenshaw (mandolin), Steve Craig (bass), and Tony Branham (guitar). The group will set the mood for this John Wayne classic with Bluegrass originals and Country-Western favorites.

"We always love playing at the Orpheum, and we're really looking forward to this concert," said Tony Branham, Blue Day's guitarist. "Our music will be a great prelude to a great Western, so we want people to come early and get into the spirit of THE SEARCHERS."

Considered one of John Wayne's best performances, THE SEARCHERS tells the story of Ethan Edwards (John Wayne). Returned from the Civil War to the Texas ranch of his brother, Edwards hopes to find a home with his family and to be near the woman he obviously (but secretly) loves. When a Comanche raid destroys these plans, and Ethan sets out, along with his 1/8 Indian nephew Martin (Jeffrey Hunter), on a years-long journey to find the niece (Natalie Wood) kidnapped by the Indians under Chief Scar. But as the quest goes on, Martin begins to realize that his uncle's hatred for the Indians is beginning to spill over onto his now-assimilated niece. Martin becomes uncertain whether Ethan plans to rescue Debbie...or kill her.

Blue Day is a Bluegrass band that was formed in 2008 when four guys who occasionally jammed together realized that they had an energy and blend that demanded more. They began rehearsing and soon had a sizable collection of songs that ran the gamut from Bill Monroe to the Steeldrivers, with the occasional pop/rock cover thrown in. If you enjoy Blue Highway, IIIrd Tyme Out, The Steeldrivers, or Steve Earle, you're sure to love this band!

In this comedy set in the 50s, The Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein has gathered for their annual quiche-off. When a siren signals a nuclear threat, the sisterhood unites and divides over secrets and a prize-winning quiche. Co-written by native Memphian Evan Linder, 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche, "dishes up high-spirited theatrical comfort food with a bit of a saucy kick." - Chicago Tribune

5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche is the directing debut of Liz Sharpe and features Jeanna Juleson (Angels in America), Gail Black (A Christmas Story), Ann Marie Hall (Hay Fever) and Erin Shelton (God of Carnage). Meghan Lisi makes her Circuit Playhouse, Inc. debut.

5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche runs July 5 - July 28 as part of the POTS@TheWorks series at TheatreWorks, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm. Nation Juneteenth Observance Foundation to Celebrate African-American Jazz Artists, 6/30

Jazz and Memphis' legacy of world-renowned African-American jazz artists will be celebrated Friday, June 21, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Historic Daisy Theater on Beale Street.

The National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF) founder, Dr. Ronald Myers will join local Juneteenth Freedom & Heritage Festival founder Glynn Johns Reed in collaborating with the Memphis Black ArtsAlliance's Jazz-A-F!RE to debut a new Memphis tradition. This event will honor the African-American legacy of internationally acclaimed Memphis Jazz Musicians:

Theatre Memphis Adds June 25 Performance of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

Due to the record sales and attendance to date of Singin' in the Rain at Theatre Memphis, an additional performance date has been added on Tuesday, June 25 at 7:30 pm.

Singin' in the Rain, a cloned stage version of the 1957 film classic, will open on the Lohrey Stage at Theatre Memphis on June 7 and run through June 30, 2013. The ultimate feel good musical based on one of the world's best-loved films, this show has charm, romance and comedy plus old Hollywood glitz and glamour. Set in a period when silent movie stars are the biggest names in the world, Don Lockwood has it all ... a string of hit films and a studio-engineered romance with the most beautiful actress in town. But with the new phenomenon of the talking picture on the way and a chance meeting with a talented young chorus girl, things start to change. Popular iconic songs are featured in this production including Good Morning, Make 'em Laugh, Moses Supposes and the favorite Singin' in the Rain.

The show performs on Tuesday, June 25, Wednesdays, June 19 and 26 and Thursdays @ 7:30pm, Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm with matinees @ 2pm on Sundays. Alicia Kelly & John Boehr to Star in SOUTH PACIFIC at Roxy Regional Theatre, 7/12-8/17

Powerhouse vocalists John Boehr and Alicia Kelly have joined the cast of Rodgers & Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC at the Roxy Regional Theatre, July 12 through August 17.

Recently off of runs as Velma in Chicago with Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas and as Marty in the national tour of Grease, Kelly is a veteran of the Roxy stage, having previously appeared in A Streetcar Named Desire (Blanche), RENT (Maureen) and CATS (Grizabella), among others.

American barihunk John Boehr, who will be making his Roxy Regional Theatre debut this season, recently performed as Schaunard in La Bohème with the Fort Worth Opera and as Morales in Carmen with the Dallas Opera.

SOUTH PACIFIC runs July 12 through August 17, playing Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7pm and Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, with a 2pm matinee on Saturday, July 20. Tosh.0 is a weekly, topical series that takes on everything the Internet has to offer through comedian Daniel Tosh's sarcastic and biting point-of-view. Every week, Tosh spins commentary about blogs and vlogs both popular and obscure, tweets and pokes, popular sites and new technologies. Daniel made his network debut on "The Late Show with David Letterman," and has returned to perform several times since. Daniel has also appeared multiple times on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno." In 2002, he taped his first stand-up special, "Comedy Central Presents: Daniel Tosh". While still living in Florida, Daniel hosted his own popular late-night television show, "Tens." Daniel has performed at the most significant comedy festivals across the globe. In 1998, he appeared in the New Faces show at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. When not performing comedy, Daniel surfs, gambles and continues to pursue his interests in acting, hosting and writing. Daniel's premiere CD, "True Stories I Made Up," was released in November of 2005 through Comedy Central Records. His hour special, "Completely Serious," premiered on Comedy Central in June 2007. Since then, he was featured in the Mike Myers' film, "The Love Guru," lent his voice to "The Life and Times of Tim" and has hosted "Live at Gotham" for Comedy Central.

Orpheum Theatre to Screen CASABLANCA, 6/21

The Orpheum's Summer Movie Series will present Memphis Film Historian Vincent Astor for a special program on Friday, June 21 at 6:30 PM before the 7:00 PM showing of CASABLANCA at the Orpheum Theatre.

Astor is a local film expert whose book about Memphis Movie Theatres is scheduled to hit shelves this fall. His most recent article, "Memphis at the Movies: 1900-1929" was published in the journal of the Theatre Historical Society of America. Now, Vincent will bring his knowledge to the Orpheum stage with an exciting multimedia presentation of Memphis' movie history, particularly regarding the theatres on Main and Beale, which included the Orpheum.

"In 1942, the year CASABLANCA was released, the Orpheum had become the flagship theatre of Malco Theatres, Inc," explains Astor. "Many people don't know the rich history that Memphis has with film, and this is just one of many fascinating facts that audiences will learn on the 21st."

Starring screen greats Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, CASABLANCA is considered one of cinema's finest dramas. In World War II Casablanca, Rick Blaine (Bogart), exiled American and former freedom fighter, runs the most popular nightspot in town. The cynical lone wolf Blaine comes into the possession of two valuable letters of transit. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in Casablanca, the sycophantic Captain Renault does what he can to please him, including detaining a Czechoslovak underground leader Victor Laszlo. Much to Rick's surprise, Lazslo arrives with Ilsa (Bergman), Rick's one time love. Rick is very bitter towards Ilsa, who ran out on him in Paris, but when he learns she had good reason to, they plan to run off together again using the letters of transit.

DEATHTRAP Comes to The Circuit Playhouse Tonight

Deathtrap by Ira Levin will run tonight, June 7 - June 30, 2013 at The Circuit Playhouse.
