Cincinnati Music Theatre Stages SUNSET BOULEVARD, Now thru 5/18

Cincinnati Music Theatre (CMT), now celebrating its 50th Anniversary Season, presents Sunset Boulevard, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. Join us tonight, May 10-18, 2013 at the Aronoff Center's Jarson-Kaplan Theater as we enter the infamous house on Sunset, and meet the "greatest star of all," Norma Desmond.

Her career, fans, and glamour have faded in all but her mind. However, when struggling screenwriter Joes Gillis enters the scene, Norma's hope for a return to the silver screen are revitalized. He agrees to edit her screenplay, but ends up becoming her kept man. Their subsequent passionate and volatile relationship leads to an unforeseen and tragic conclusion.

The cast includes some of the city's finest talent, including: Laurie Brinkman (Norma Desmond), Michael Shawn Starks (Joe Gillis), Wayne Wright (Max Von Mayerling), Bree Hunter Sprankle (Betty Schaefer), Jeremy Cheek (Cecil B. Village Players and Fort Thomas Woman's Club Present CakeTown COMEDY JAM 2, 5/10 & 11

The Village Players and Fort Thomas' Woman's Club will present CakeTown COMEDY JAM 2! on Friday andSaturday, May 10-11, 2013 at 8 PM at the Village Players Theater in Fort Thomas. The two-hour show of light entertainment will feature stand up comedians, short comic plays, musical comedy and storytelling by some of the Tristate's funniest and most accomplished performers, actors, and writers.

The Carol Burnett-type comic variety show is rated PG-13 and features a lineup with local favorites, including Teri Foltz, two-time Funniest Person in Cincinnati Finalist; Thomas Cox, Funniest Person in Northern Kentucky 2009; Michael Rudolph, Funniest Person in Cincinnati Winner; and popular local comics Kim Sherwood and Adam Minnick; award-winning playwrights A. K. Forbes and Phil Paradis; Newport musical humorist Peter Lloyd; and vocalist Libbie Sparks, a senior at Highlands High School.

The fundraiser also features three short comic plays by Fort Thomas playwrights A. K. Forbes and Phil Paradis. Donna Hoffman directs "Flight Path," featuring acting talents of Barbara and Tom Manning, "The Kitty Cat Ultimatum," with Jamie Ball and Cate White, and "The Great Debate," starring Dennis Blom and Clint Bramkamp.

There will be a silent auction with gifts donated by community patrons, including tickets to events and artwork and photographs by local artists.

CakeTown COMEDY JAM2! will be presented on Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at 8 PM, at the Village Players Theater, 8 North Fort Thomas Avenue, Fort Thomas, KY 41075. Tickets are $15 and may be reserved by calling (859) 781-1110. Tickets also may be purchased at the door beginning at 7 PM before show time. Proceeds will benefit the Village Players and the Fort Thomas Woman's Club. All participants in this event are volunteers.

Mayor of Cincinnati, Mark Mallory, Proclaims May 3 as Brian Isaac Phillips Day

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company has announced that Mark Mallory, Mayor of the City of Cincinnati has proclaimed May 3, 2013 as "Brian Isaac Phillips Day".

The proclamation states that "Brian Isaac Phillips' ten years of artistic direction, vision and leadership of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company have guided CSC to its landmark 20th Anniversary Season and in its 20th Anniversary Season Cincinnati Shakespeare Company under Brian's leadership will have produced all 38 of Shakespeare's plays making CSC one of only five theaters to have completed the Canon... Brian and his team have continuously increased annual attendance during his tenure (and) ...have brought more than 120 artists to live in Cincinnati, the majority of whom have made their homes here... Brian has instilled the CSC Education and Outreach Programs with the excellence needed to enlighten and inspire ove+r 20,000 students each year... Brian's commitment to making Shakespeare and the Classics come to life in fresh new ways has made CSC a valued part of the lives of thousands of Cincinnatians... we honor Brian Isaac Phillips on the completion of his 10th season as Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company."

The award was presented to Brian by Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls on May 3, 2013 before the opening night performance of William Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure" directed by Brian Isaac Phillips. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. SRO Theatre Company presents The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas to be staged May 31 to June 9, 2013, at the Shedd Theatre in the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215.

This Drama Desk Award winner for Outstanding Lyrics and Outstanding Music and a Tony Award nominee for Best Musical features a foot-stomping country-western score as it tells the story of the legendary Chicken Ranch, a Texas brothel frequented by politicians, football players, and others. It's business as usual until the ranch meets with opposition from a crusading watchdog who aims his TV cameras and moral indignation at the ranch. Book by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson; music and lyrics by Carol Hall; based on a story by Larry King.

Please note that this play is suggested for mature audiences because of adult themes and language.

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is directed by April Olt, with musical direction by Bryan Babcock and choreography by Amanda Cawthorne.

April Olt, a Central Ohio Theatre Roundtable award winner for excellence in directing, has been directing and teaching theatre for more than 15 years. As a dramaturg and director, Olt has worked on numerous productions and has taught and designed courses for all levels of educational institutions and theatre companies.

Bryan Babcock, who, for a number of years, was co-director/writer for Nationwide Insurance employee shows, has provided musical direction for Gallery Players, Little Theatre Off Broadway, and Columbus School for girls. For more than 30 years, he has been Maestro at Maynard Avenue United Methodist.
Bryan also coordinates the annual mass choir concert, consisting of a group of churches and benefiting Neighborhood Services, Inc., a purveyor of food and clothing for those in need.

Amanda Cawthorne, who is a Theatre Roundtable award winner for her choreography in Fiddler on the Roof at Gallery Players, has worked onstage and behind the scenes with many local theatres, including Curtain Players Theatre, Columbus Children's Theatre, and Emerald City Players. This summer she will be making her Shakespeare debut with New Players Theater playing Kate inThe Taming of the Shrew.

Showtimes for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas are 8 p.m. on Friday, May 31; 8 pm. on Saturday, June 1; 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 2; 10:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, June 7; 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 8; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 9.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Cincinnati's stage for the classics, is pleased to present Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure", playing from May 3-26, 2013. This production is directed by CSC Producing Artistic Director, Brian Isaac Phillips and features Kelly Mengelkoch, Brent Vimtrup and Nicholas Rose. In a city where any prohibited vice is readily available, stands Angelo, left in charge by an absent Duke. As he begins a crusade to enforce long forgotten codes of chastity, a young man's life is threatened. But when Isabella, a novice nun, pleads for the life of her brother, she is offered a truly indecent proposal to spare him from Angelo himself. Shakespeare puts hypocritical, ethical and religious double standards on trial in this captivating and deep examination of the value of virtue and the power of our vices.

Producing Artistic Director, Brian Isaac Phillips is excited to bring this play back to Cincinnati Shakespeare Company for the first time in 18 years. Mr. Phillips says "we have discovered a lot of satire and wit as we explore the biting social criticism in this play. The behavior of these characters, from Isabella, a novice nun, to a comic bawd like Mistress Overdone is like a dark comic mirror, held up to nature. Shakespeare has written a play that begs us to examine modern day decadence and hypocrisy." Mr. Phillips continues to say that "the setting for this production of 'Measure for Measure' will be in the prohibition era. We wanted to place this production in this era to help give modern audiences a context for the actions and deeply held opinions that characters in the play hold. We see the Duke carousing at a speakeasy with ladies, moral enforcers giving into lust and a sister asked to trade her virtue for her family and instantly must ask ourselves who represents right and wrong in such a world." The set is designed by award winning resident set designer, Andrew Hungerford. Resident costume designer, Heidi Jo Schiemer and resident sound designer, Doug Borntrager return to help create the gritty and precariously dangerous world of prohibition.

Major Renovations Planned for Covedale Center This Summer

The Covedale Center for the Performing Arts - owned and operated by Cincinnati Landmark Productions (CLP) - will undergo a massive renovation aimed at improving the patron experience. The work was identified shortly after CLP bought the building in 2002 (with support from the city of Cincinnati), along with four other phases of renovation work to transform the old movie house into a 21^st century performing arts center. The work scheduled for this summer is the last of the original five-phase renovation plan.

"Our patrons have supported our efforts to produce professional theater on the west side," said Tim Perrino, executive artistic director. "We're very excited to in turn give our patrons a great front-of-house experience and the first-class amenities they deserve."

The renovation work - estimated to cost $158,000 - includes:

Electrical work/repair of the iconic marquee
New programmable LED information panels installed on the marquee
New energy-efficient entry lobby doors
Complete lobby beautification, including new tile flooring, paint, lighting
Expansion of the current women's restroom
Creation of a new, dedicated wheelchair-accessible restroom off the lobby
Re-sealing of the parking lot around the building
Replacing a section of roofing above the lobby

Upgrading the marquee to programmable digital sign panels will allow CLP to feature community events and neighborhood initiatives on a rotating basis for Glenway Avenue traffic and passerby. A 1999 city of Cincinnati survey calculated that 15,000 people pass the building daily.

The project will also beautify and increase the restroom facilities in the lobby, which are too often over-crowded during busy show nights. The renovations will increase the number of women's fixtures from five to eight.

"Expanding the women's restrooms has easily been the most requested improvement to the building since we took over," Perrino said. "We're very pleased to be able to address that, so we can more quickly get people back in the theater to socialize, talk about the show and catch up with their friends."

The Covedale Center for the Performing Arts has been an unqualified success since it opened in 2002. Last year, over 35,000 ticket-buyers (representing 321 different zip codes) saw a show at the Covedale, making it a true regional destination. The Covedale Center's more than 3,600 subscribers make CLP one of the most popular and fastest-growing arts organizations in the area.

Final support was secured this spring to start work on the building renovations. Financial assistance was provided by:

The Covedale Center won't be dark all summer during renovation work. The 32^nd annual Cincinnati Young People's Theatre teen program will still rehearse and perform its summer musical Grease at the Covedale. To accommodate the performances, the lobby improvements will be broken up and split between May/June work and August work. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in time for the new 2013-14 Covedale Center subscription season when the Johnny Cash musical, Ring of Fire, takes the stage on September 5.

The last production of the current season - Legally Blonde - wraps this Sunday, May 5. Tickets for the final weekend are still available.

Previous renovations to the Covedale building completed by CLP included:

Turning a two-screen movie house into a single 400-seat auditorium
Building a stage and permanent theatrical lighting grid
Adding a 1,700-sq. ft. rehearsal hall and backstage dressing rooms
Re-installing the iconic light beacon on the top of the building
