DON PASQUALE
Wichita Grand Opera
2/8-5/17/2013
Based on a concept by William Powers

ACT I. Don Pasquale is the proprietor of Pasquale's Garden Restaurant, one of Wichita's most popular night spots! Pasquale can always count on his nephew Ernesto to turn up for Karaoke Night at the restaurant. Annoyed that Ernesto has resisted all of his attempts to fix Ernesto up with a "nice girl," Pasquale decides to marry and have children so he can cut Ernesto out of his will. Fortunately for Ernesto, Dr. Malatesta - Pasquale's psychiatrist - has a foolproof plan to help out.

Dr. Malatesta offers to set Pasquale up with his sister Sophronia, a sweet Catholic girl who just graduated from Newman University. What Pasquale doesn't know is that "Sophronia" is Ernesto's girlfriend Norina in disguise!

Norina grasps Malatesta's plan quickly: enchant old man Pasquale, pretend to marry him, and then make his life completely miserable. Norina takes to her new role with gusto, bossing the befuddled old man around and transforming his happy little restaurant into a gaudy nightclub. The plan works so well that Pasquale begs the Doctor to help him get rid of "Sophronia".

ACT II. Malatesta tells Pasquale that "Sophronia" and Ernesto will be having a secret rendezvous late that night. Since it's Karaoke Night, it should be easy to follow Ernesto there. When they confront "Sophronia," Malatesta - on Pasquale's orders - tells "Sophronia" that Pasquale's nephew Ernesto will be marrying a girl named Norina soon, and the new couple will be moving in with Pasquale.

Outraged, "Sophronia" refuses to live in the same house with another woman, and threatens to move out. But first, she demands proof that the wedding isn't just a trick to get rid of her. Pasquale happily consents to a wedding on the spot and asks Malatesta to go fetch Norina, only to learn that Norina has been there the whole time!

2013 William Inge Theatre Festival Honors Its Namesake, Now thru May 4

The William Inge Theatre Festival has a long rich history of honoring great living playwrights, acknowledging these too-often underappreciated creative heroes of the stage. But the 32nd annual Inge Festival in 2013 changes pace: honoring its namesake American icon William Inge, to celebrate the centennial of his birth.

The William Inge Theatre Festival at Independence Community College takes place today, May 1-4 of 2013, in Inge's rural hometown of Independence, Kansas, where, annually, Broadway and Hollywood artists meet on the prairie to mingle with visitors from more than 24 states.

Over the years, internationally renowned dramatists including Arthur Miller, Neil Simon, Stephen Sondheim, August Wilson and Wendy Wasserstein journeyed to Independence. But in 2013, focus is on Pulitzer Prize and Oscar-winning William Motter Inge, born May 3, 1913. His gravesite in this town of 9,000 is simply marked "William Inge: Playwright," a modest designation for one of the America's most soul-searching dramatists, whose work enlightened several generations.

"The nation is reconnecting with the tremendous depth of William Inge's work, and recognizing the legacy of his great drama," said Peter Ellenstein, artistic director of the Inge Center. "The 100th anniversary of his birth marks a perfect occasion to celebrate the Midwest's first authentic voice for the stage. It's a testament to his timeless genius for understanding human frailty that his plays are resonating with audiences sixty years later."

"The opening of a revival of 'Picnic' on Broadway in January 2013 makes two Broadway revivals of Inge works in four years," he noted. "There is a resurgence of appreciation in his empathetic characters, as they strive to deal with the difficulties of their lives. It's been more than sixty years since the opening of his first Broadway hit, 'Come Back, Little Sheba,' and his characters are just as real and alive for a modern audience."

Inge remains the only American dramatist to score four consecutive Broadway hits, with "Sheba" (1950), "Picnic" (1953), "Bus Stop" (1955) and "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs" (1957) tumbling forth as critical and commercial successes. Each was turned into a major Hollywood film with the biggest stars of the era.

Inge also wrote for film and television, most famously winning the Oscar for best screenplay for "Splendor in the Grass" (1961), which starred Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty.

"The wonderful playwright Jerome Lawrence ["Inherit the Wind," "Auntie Mame"] was a friend of William Inge, and when Inge Festival founder Margaret Goheen, Theatre Instructor at Independence Community College, was looking to start a festival in William Inge's name, it was Mr. Lawrence who suggested honoring a living playwright," said Ellenstein. "Mr. Lawrence believed that Inge himself, who battled depression, would have been heartened and encouraged if a festival had celebrated his achievements when he was alive."

The first Inge Festival was in 1981, eight years after Inge's death, and celebrated Inge's exemplary plays. In the next year, Jerome Lawrence traveled to Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas, to accept the initial William Inge Theatre Festival Distinguished Achievement in the American Theatre Award.

The roll call of Honorees since includes virtually every internationally acclaimed stage writer in the nation.

"Part of what makes the Inge Festival so one-of-a-kind is that all our Honorees travel to this rurAl Small town of Independence," said Ellenstein. "Upon arrival, our Honorees experience some 'culture shock,' but they are quickly won over. All our out-of-town guests remark that the hometown hospitality and small-town setting is what they find so incomparable."

"Hundreds of local residents volunteer year-round in the planning and execution of the Inge Festival," Ellenstein said. "It wouldn't be possible for a small town to throw such an amazing event if it weren't for the volunteers."

Though the Distinguished Achievement in the American Theatre Award won't be presented in the coming year, the Inge Festival will retain many of its well-known traditions. "We shall still present the Otis Guernsey New Voices in the American Theatre Award," said Ellenstein. "This award was created to salute the up and coming playwrights who become some of our stage's brightest lights. For over 20 years, the Inge Festival's Otis Guernsey New Voices winners have graced our festival audiences with first looks at outstanding work that ends up in major theatres around the country and often on Broadway."

The peer-nominated and peer-selected award is named after the late theater scholar and critic Otis L. Guernsey, a champion of new scripts and a frequent guest at the Inge Festival. A play by the New Voices winner takes places Thursday night of the Inge Festival, on May 2.

On Friday, May 3, professional performers from across the nation join in the Gala Dinner, which naturally serves as the official "100th Birthday Party" for William Inge. The event is a fund-raiser for continuing renovation and maintenance of the historic William Inge Boyhood Home, which serves Independence Community College and the community as a year-round artist retreat. The house, with its expansive front porch and early 20th century architecture, is the obvious inspiration for many of William Inge's plays such as "Picnic" and "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs".

The 2013 Inge Festival, which opens on Wednesday, May 1 with a program to be announced, concludes on Saturday, May 4, with a tribute to William Inge's rich career for film, television, and the stage featuring performances by many of America's leading actors. In addition to evening performances by professionals from Broadway and Hollywood, Inge Festival patrons enjoy workshops, panel discussions, a scholars' conference and numerous social events throughout the day.

The Inge Festival's setting is the quaint small town of Independence, located in rural southeast Kansas. It is 90 miles north of Tulsa, Okla., and 140 miles south of Kansas City, Mo.

Independence Community College is also home to the William Inge Collection, which includes correspondence, original artwork, and some 400 of his original scripts, as well as Inge's personal library and record collections. It also houses a number of Inge manuscripts that have never been published. In 2012, the Inge Festival presented the first public performance of one of the unpublished manuscripts, titled "Off the Main Road." In 2009, six of Inge's unpublished plays from the Inge Collection were publicly performed for the first time, five at the Inge Festival and one world premiere in New York. The Inge Collection at Independence Community College is the most extensive collection on William Inge in existence, and remains a valuable resource for both theater researchers and admirers of the playwright.

Thanks primarily to the work of longtime Tribute creator Mike Wood of Wichita State University, the Inge Center has amassed a vast collection of video interviews of America's leading playwrights, composers, actors, directors, producers and other theatre professionals, gathered over the last three decades. A sampling of playwright interviews is available on the website www.ingefestival.org. The rest of the video collection is in the process of being digitally preserved for future generations.

The festival is the official theatre festival of the state of Kansas. Tickets for the 32nd Annual William Inge Theatre Festival go on sale online in the spring of 2013. SWAN LAKE
Wichita Grand Opera
5/1-5/1/2013
ACT I. Prince Siegfried has come of age and entered upon a new world of affairs of war and the burdens of manhood. It is the day for leaving behind the whims and caprice of youth. A happy day for the Prince, though touched by anxiety. The kindly jester and tutor who have been the Prince's loving companions since his childhood are the first to congratulate him. He greets his companions and joyfully accepts the congratulations of all the residents of the Castle.

The Prince's subjects come from far and wide to take part in the festivities. They confer upon him the sword and scepter of authority and swear allegiance to their new ruler. His mother, the Queen Mother of the Realm, presents him with an arbalest as a gift and reminds him that the time has come to choose a bride and that he must make the fateful decision at tomorrow's ball. He is eager to contemplate this life change in silence. The festivities continue, but the Prince is overcome by a desire to be alone, far from his guests. As he begins to search the contents of his heart he notices a flight of white swans heading toward the nearby lake. He is inspired and follows them there, disappearing into the night.

ACT II. The voyage to the lake takes the Prince into the depths of the forest. He approaches the Swans quietly and as he nears he sees something quite out of the ordinary. The Swans have stepped ashore and assumed human form! Siegfried lowers the crossbow, astonished with their striking beauty. He gathers his courage and reveals himself. Odette, the swan's Queen tells him of their terrible curse. They are all at the mercy of the wicked sorcerer Rotbart and only by finding true love can the evil spell be lifted. Siegfried, overcome with love at first sight, swears to her an everlasting love. As the sun beings to dawn, Odette warns him that if he breaks his oath, nothing will be able to help them. The Prince is completely overcome by the incomparable and exquisite delicacy of Odette, and swears that he will return and free her from the evil spell. As the sunlight touches them, the women transform back into Swans, cloaked in silence.

ACT III. The castle resounds to the clamor of festivities. Renowned Princesses from Hungary, Russia, Spain, Italy and Poland are presented to the Prince. He must choose one of them as his bride, in order to strengthen his authority and consolidate his power. However, in none of these royal heiresses does he find a maiden comparable to Odette, to whom he has given his heart. He rejects them all.

With an overwhelming blare of trumpets, a couple of new guests are announced. The evil sorcerer, Rotbart, enters in the guise of a noble knight, and following close behind is his daughter, Odylle, who looks remarkably like Odette. The similarity is so close, in fact, that Siegfried believes, if only for a split second, that it is Odette standing there before him. Odylle seizes the brief moment of illusion as an opportunity and will not allow him to find his senses. She becomes a bewitching temptress, luring him, hypnotizing him, and tricking him into confessing his undying love to her! In this hypnotic stupor, he proclaims that Odylle is to be his bride. Rotbard has triumphed! Siegfried has broken his oath to Odette, betraying her by professing love to another, thereby dooming Odette and the others to an eternity under Rotbart's evil power. Suddenly a vision of the Swan Lake appears before Siegfried's eyes, snapping him back into reality. He realizes the terrible mistake he has made. In despair he leaves the palace and hurries to Odette at the Lake.

ACT IV. Night falls again on the Lake. The swan maidens are anxious, for if the Prince does not fulfill his vow to set them free, they will be doomed to everlasting captivity. The sorcerer raises a raging storm to conceal the Swan Lake behind a screen of dark clouds, But the Prince rushes headlong through the storm to Odette. The sorcerer attempts to conceal her from him, but no power can stop the young man whose heart is so full of love. The Prince overcomes all obstacles, and the spell cast by the evil sorcerer is dashed forever on the rock of true love.

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless. This version of JOSEPH?DREAMCOAT features extended songs and dances. The Megamix is available as a separate rental with this version.

HANDEL'S GIULIO CESARE
Murdock Theatre
4/27-4/27/2013
The action is based on the historical events of the Roman civil war of 48-47 B.C. Julius Caesar has defeated his rival Pompey and pursued him to Alexandria, capital of Egypt. The kingdom is ruled jointly by Cleopatra and her younger brother Ptolemy, the last of the dynasty established in Egypt, after its conquest by Alexander the Great. Pompey has appealed to Ptolemy for arms and refuge.

Act I
Caesar (Cesare) enters Alexandria with his general Curius (Curio) and his army. They are met by Cornelia and Sextus (Sesto), the wife and son of Pompey, who have come to sue for peacE. Caesar agrees to embrace his enemy, but at that moment Achillas (Achilla), general of Ptolemy (Tolomeo), arrives with a greeting and gift from his king: Pompey's severed head. Disgusted, Caesar sends Achillas back with an angry message for Ptolemy and a threatening promise that he will meet with the king at his palace before nightfall. Cornelia laments her loss and Sextus swears to avenge his dead father.

In the palace at Alexandria, Cleopatra plots to take sole possession of the throne. When she learns of Ptolemy's betrayal of Pompey from her servant Nirenus (Nireno), she resolves to visit Caesar's camp and win his favour and aid. She and Ptolemy bicker before she steals away. Achillas tells Ptolemy of Caesar's angry reception of his gift and offers to accomplish his murder if Ptolemy grants him Cornelia as a reward. Ptolemy fears the growing strength of Rome under the leadership of Caesar and agrees.

At his camp, Caesar presides over Pompey's funeral rites. Cleopatra presents herself to him disguised as Lydia, a handmaiden in the palace, of noble birth but robbed of her birthright by Ptolemy. Captivated, Caesar promises to help her. Cleopatra and Nirenus watch as Cornelia pays her last respects to her dead husband. Cornelia and Sextus plan together to kill Ptolemy. Cleopatra, still disguised, comes forward and pledges the support of the Queen of Egypt, offering them the services of Nirenus as a guide into the palace.

Caesar meets with Ptolemy in an interview of frosty diplomacy. Nevertheless, he cautiously accepts the king's invitation of hospitality. Cornelia and Sextus confront Ptolemy. He is struck by Cornelia's beauty, but when Sextus challenges him to combat, he orders their imprisonment. Achillas offers Cornelia her freedom in return for her favors, but she angrily refuses. She and Sextus bid each other a sad farewell before the guards separate them.

Act II
With Nirenus's help, Cleopatra has arranged an entertainment at the palace to further ensnare the interest of Caesar. He arrives and is enchanted by her song. Nirenus assures him that "Lydia" is deeply attracted and will wait for him later that night in her apartment.

Cornelia, now a prisoner of Ptolemy, laments her fate. She repulses Achillas once more, only to be met by the advances of Ptolemy himself. She resolves to take her own life but is saved by Sextus. He has escaped from prison with the aid of Nirenus, who also brings the news that Ptolemy has commanded Cornelia to become one of his concubines. He will help to smuggle Sextus into the harem as well, where, unguarded, the king will be at his most vulnerable.

Cleopatra waits for Caesar in her apartment, pretending to be asleep when he enters. Their tryst is interrupted by Curius, who has overheard Achillas's assassins searching the palace for Caesar. Cleopatra reveals her true identity to Caesar and begs him to fly to safety. Caesar refuses and goes to face his enemy. Cleopatra prays to the gods to preserve him and the love she now truly feels for him.

Act III
Ptolemy, secure in his harem, lays aside his arms. He throws a white veil to Cornelia in token that she is to be his that night. Sextus steals in and tries to use Ptolemy's sword to kill him but is disarmed by Achillas, who summons the king to war: Caesar is believed to have plunged to his death in the harbor during the previous night's assault, but Cleopatra has fled to the Roman camp and mustered an army to march on the palace. Ptolemy prepares to lead his troops, but refuses Achillas the promised reward for Caesar's death: Cornelia is to be his own prize. A furious Achillas decides to switch his allegiance to Cleopatra.

Ptolemy's troops are victorious in the battle and Cleopatra is taken prisoner. Her brother promises to take a terrible revenge, but she faces death with couragE. Caesar, meanwhile, is not dead: the sea has cast him up onto the shore. Far from his armies, he prays to the wind for help. Sextus and Nirenus stumble across the wounded Achillas dying on the beach. Overheard by Caesar, he gives Sextus a seal that will give the bearer authority to command his troops. As Achillas dies, Caesar takes the seal from Sextus and leaves to assemble a force to storm the palace. Sextus finds new hope. Revenge will soon be his.

In prison, Cleopatra has prepared to take her own lifE. Caesar breaks in with his troops and rescues her. He sends her to the port to rally her armies and leaves to wage war on Ptolemy. Cleopatra rejoices.

Believing himself to be victorious, Ptolemy sees no obstacle to his pursuit of Cornelia, but Sextus at last seizes his chance and kills him.

The battle has been won and Caesar crowns Cleopatra as sole Queen of Egypt. She declares her allegiance to the Roman Empire. The lovers sing and all welcome the arrival of peace.

It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent '60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus' meteor-like rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ's final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.Lyrics by Tim Rice; Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

From one of musical theatre's most exciting new composers comes ORDINARY DAYS, a refreshingly honest and funny musical about making real connections in the city that never sleeps (but probably should at some point.) ORDINARY DAYS tells the story of four young New Yorkers whose lives intersect as they search for fulfillment, happiness, love and cabs. Through a score of vibrant and memorable songs, their experiences ring startlingly true to life. ORDINARY DAYS is an original musical for anyone who's ever struggled to appreciate the simple things in a complex place. With equal doses of humor and poignancy, it celebrates how 8.3 million individual stories combine in unexpected ways to make New York City such a unique and extraordinary home. The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry.

Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.Music by Rodgers, Richard; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Book by Oscar Hammerstein II & Joshua Logan; Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel

Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.Music by Rodgers, Richard; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse; Suggested by `The Trapp Family Singers` by Maria Augusta Trapp
