Florida State Thespians Raise $44,041 for BC/EFA

Florida State Thespians banded together yet again this school year to raise $44,041 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a record-setting year for them and more than any other education-based organization in the country.

Florida's high school theatre students have been committed to raising funds for Broadway Cares since 1999. This year's total broke the organization's previous one-year total of $33,000 set in 2007 and brings the Florida Thespians' all-time grand total to $420,734.

"For 14 years the students and theatre educators in Florida have shown tremendous generosity in their support of Broadway Cares," said Joe Norton, BC/EFA's director of education and outreach. "These students are affecting change by working together, raising awareness about HIV/AIDS in their schools and communities and making a difference for those who need help the most."

State Director Daron Hawkins, who's also a drama teacher at Riverview High School in Riverview, FL, called it "breathtaking" to see young people become so passionate about caring for others.

"The results of this year's Broadway Cares fundraising by the Florida State Thespians solidify my faith in young people and the arts," Hawkins said. "Where there is art, there is compassion."

Florida Thespians raise money on the local, district and state level, making it one of the most coordinated BC/EFA fundraising campaigns in educational theatre. Students raise money by selling ribbons, bracelets, buttons and T-shirts, hosting special auctions, impromptu performances and audience donations and creating an AIDS Walk just for Broadway Cares at the state festival.

Florida State Thespians are an affiliate of the Educational Theatre Association's International Thespian Society, the honorary organization for high school and middle school theatre students which last year topped $1 million in money raised for Broadway Cares.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS supports 26 AIDS and family services organizations in Florida and last year granted $192,500 to help provide medications, health care, nutritious meals and emergency financial assistance.

Since 1988 BC/EFA has raised more than $225 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.

Broadway Cares awards annual grants to more than 450 organizations nationwide and is the major supporter of the social service programs at The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative and the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic.

Broward Cultural Division Offers Business Plan Clinic and Workshop for Artists, 6/22

The Business Plan Clinic guides participants through preparation of a simple business plan, an essential tool for any artist. In addition, participants will learn how to effectively work with lenders to obtain financial support. The workshop will be facilitated by Rafael Cruz, regional director with the Small Business Development Center and Cheryl Cook, economic development specialist with the South Florida Regional Planning Council. Participants will have the opportunity to network with past alumni of the Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute.

In addition, Katerina Wagner, founder and principal of Miami Art Scene will present a lecture onDeveloping a Brand for the Artist. Miami Art Scene is a boutique art consulting, promotion and publicity firm specializing in the marketing, branding and representation of contemporary artists. Katerina was an exhibiting artist for over a decade where she learned the business aspects of art. She also worked within the advertising industry for many years, which led her to eventually merge her experience in media, public relations, marketing and social networking with her art and design industry background, establishing herself as a social media specialist, art manager, publicist and curator. She is a member of the Boca Raton Museum of Art Artist's Guild, ARTCENTER/South Florida, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Broward Art Guild, and the Wynwood Arts District Association.

Attendance at the workshop is highly recommended for artists and alumni of the Artists as an Entrepreneur Institute. There is no fee for this workshop, however, seating is limited, RSVP is required.

THE VOICE's Michaela Paige to Appear at Entr'Acte Theatrix's SPAMALOT, 6/22

Entr'Acte Theatrix has teamed with the Intertainment Network's popular W4CY Internet Radio to bring 2012 The Voicefinalist Michaela Paige to the Delray Beach Centre for the Arts' Crest Theatre. Paige will participate in a live remote broadcast leading up to Saturday evening June 22nd performance of Monty Python's Spamalot.

Paige is currently Los Angeles for The Voice finale, and will fly home especially for the Entr'Acte/Spamalot event. The young singer, a Boca Raton native, was a popular contestant on last year's show, and her coach, country mega-star Blake Shelton, predicted a great future for her on the evening of her eventual elimination:

The show features - among other things - lusty maidens, dancing divas, a flatulent Frenchman, and a killer rabbit.

He's tackled Joan and Christina Crawford, Hannibal Lechter and Clarice Starling, and the Sugarbaker gals of Atlanta. Now he has his sights set on the girls at the Eastland School. From the writer who brought you "Mommie Queerest", "Silence Of The Clams", and Re-Designing Women", comes the raunchiest show in his repertoire. "The Facts of Life: The Lost Episode" by Jamie Morris is coming to Empire Stage in Ft. Lauderdale this summer!

Dildos, prostitution, cerebral palsy, and lesbian sex are just a few of the politically incorrect plotlines that mark this as an adults-only show! The Dallas Voice put if perfectly: "The Lost Episode" is entirely the product of Morris' twisted mind, adding tons of inappropriate humor you would be challenged to find on premium cable nowadays, not to say on NBC of yesteryear."

When budget cuts force Mrs. Garrett to leave Eastland, Blair, Tootie, Natalie and Jo will do anything to raise the money so she can stay, ANYTHING! (Ok, they become hookers and they sing and dance about it!) Add an evil Headmaster who has a thing for Mrs. G, lesbian overtones between Jo and Blair, and a guest cameo by cousin Geri and you have the lost episode that Showtime wished they'd snatched up.

"The Facts Of Life: The Lost Episode" is directed by Christopher Kenney (Mommie Queerest) and it's talented cast includes Jamie Morris (Mrs. Garrett), Brooks Braselman (Natalie), Charlie Logan (Jo), Shawn Burgess (Tootie), and David Tracy (Blair).

"Facts" premiered in 2004 in Provincetown, MA where Provincetown Magazine said, "John Waters would be proud of Morris who has managed to turn a sweet, little sitcom into porn." The Provincetown Banner added: "If the sitcom had been this funny it might still be on the air." After two successful sold-out runs in New York the critics agreed. HX Magazine called the show a "raunchy, side-splitting musical spoof, so wrong in so many ways". StageBuzz: "Be prepared for a wild, raunchy, crazy time. It's damn funny!" Time Out New York: "deliciously nasty!"

"Facts" enjoyed a sold-out run in Dallas, where the show was extended three times and became the most successful show in the history of the Uptown Players. It was also named the #2 Ballsiest Show in Dallas by Pegasus News. The reviewer from the Dallas Observer noted of her experience: "I wheezed so hard laughing that the guys next to me asked if I was having an asthma attack."

Parade Productions to Present Premiere Reading of Michael Leeds' THE GIFT, 7/1

Parade Productions will present a premiere reading of award-winning South Florida playwright/director Michael Leeds' new work, The Gift. This FREE reading will take place on July 1st at 7:30 p.m., at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center's Studio Theatre in Boca Raton and will feature actors Clay Cartland and Lindsey Forgey.

The premise of The Gift is simple: A young man and woman are stuck in adjoining elevators. However their gradual realization they might actually be trapped in each other's dreams leads the characters - and audiences - on an intriguing journey as they discover things about one another, and themselves, they have never known before.

"The genesis for The Gift came when I was hunting for an idea and read a quote from a New York playwright who said, 'Most people suggest writing what you know. I like to write what I fear.'" Leeds explains. "When I was younger I had bouts of claustrophobia and as a writer I'm drawn to plays that have a fantastical element to them. So I started with the image of a young man trapped in an elevator who realizes he's actually trapped in a dream, and the story just evolved from there."

"We were looking for a play to help develop. We fell in love with this one," Parade Productions' Executive Producer Candace Caplin says. "The characters are irresistible and the concept is fascinating. It's an honor to be part of this process with Michael."

Leeds is equally pleased: "Getting the chance to have a reading at Parade Productions with Candace and (director) Kim St. Leon and wonderful actors like Clay Cartland and Lindsey Forgey is a terrific opportunity. I'm hoping the audience will be as intrigued with The Gift as I was writing it."

Although he is primarily recognized as one of South Florida's finest and busiest directors, Leeds has also had great success as a playwright, screen writer, and choreographer. He co-wrote and directed the Broadway musical Swinging on a Star which received a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical as well as a Drama Desk Award nomination and a Theatre World Award. Off-Broadway he directed and choreographed Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah - The Songs of Allan Sherman, starring Tovah Feldshuh & Mary Testa, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Director and Best Choreographer. His extensive resume also includes work on films such as End of Summer, starring Jacqueline Bisset and Peter Weller (choreographer); he co-wrote The Simian Line starring William Hurt, Lynn Redgrave and Tyne Daly and The Last Film Festival, starring Dennis Hopper, and Jacqueline Bisset. Leeds' plays include The First Step,Who Killed Joan Crawford, and a new version of Cole Porter's Red, Hot And Blue. His recent directing credits includeMack and Mabel (Carbonell Award Best Musical), Lend Me A Tenor, My Fair Lady and The Light In The Piazza(Carbonell nomination Best Musical, Silver Palm Award for Direction) at Broward Stage Door, and Driving Miss Daisyand Chapter Two at The Plaza Theatre. Maltz Jupiter Theatre's Summer Camp to Present LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, 6/28-29

This summer, join the fun with Little Shop of Horrors and students who are learning from Broadway's best at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's summer camp programs.

International performer Ricky Nahas will direct and choreograph the upcoming production of the musical romp Little Shop of Horrors on June 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Jupiter Community High School. Fun for the entire family, tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children.

The show will star students from the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts' three-week Senior Conservatory summer camp (grades 6-12), in which students learn all aspects of theatre such as acting, dance and voice, culminating in full performances of a musical.

One of the most captivating musical shows of our time, the hilarious, musical sci-fi spoof Little Shop of Horrors follows Seymour, a plant shop owner who gains fame, fortune and love after he discovers an exotic plant with an appetite for humans. The pop-rock phenomenon features unforgettable '60s-style doo-wop music and popular tunes such as "Little Shop of Horrors," "Suddenly Seymour," and "Skid Row."

"Little Shop of Horrors is a campy, uproarious send-up of 'B' horror flicks," said Julie Rowe, director of education for the Conservatory. "The storyline is funny and clever, the music is infectious and there will be giant puppets, all under the guidance of a wonderful guest director."

A new addition to the Conservatory's faculty, Nahas is a musical theatre performer, choreographer and dance teacher who has spent more than a decade performing in national tours, regional theater and in theaters throughout Europe. Recently seen onstage at the Theatre inJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, he choreographed the Theatre's production of the new musical Through the Looking Glass, which premiered in 2012 and will return to the Theatre's stage in November. Other recent stage credits include Radames in Aida, Mungo Jerry in Cats, Iowa Company of Altar Boyz and a swing in the National Tour of Saturday Night Fever. His TV credits include roles on Burn Noticeand Guiding Light.

During camp, Nahas will guide students through the process of auditioning for a Broadway show, a fast-paced rehearsal schedule and the opportunity to showcase all that they've learned onstage, complete with costumes, sets, professional lighting and a professional theater orchestra.

"The Senior Conservatory is a wonderful opportunity for local teens to have the chance to experience what it's like to work in professional theatre and perform on that Theatre's stage in a full musical," Rowe said. "There's still time to sign up for camp, and we'd like to encourage local teens to join us this summer at the Conservatory."

Other exciting camp options for grades K-12 include the upcoming Junior Conservatory (grades 3-5), a four-day Monster Mash camp (grades K-5), one-week Dr. Seuss camp (grades K-5), one-week Super Sea Creatures camp (grades 3-5) and a two-week Dance Intensive camp (grades 6-12).

Students will perform Little Shop of Horrors June 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. onstage at Jupiter Community High School's auditorium, located at 500 Military Trail, Jupiter. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children.

In addition to a full schedule of classes, the Conservatory's hands-on workshops and master classes offer students an opportunity to learn first-hand from nationally known directors and Broadway performers, agents and local instructors.

The not-for-profit Maltz Jupiter Theatre has become one of Florida's preeminent professional theatres, committed to production and education through its collaborations with local and national artists. Currently the state's largest award-winning regional theatre, the Theatre draws over 70,000 people annually, serves a subscription base of more than 7,530 and has world-class classroom facilities in support of its Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts, which serves hundreds of youth and adults.
