Joshua Finkel to Direct 'FORUM' for Panic! Productions, 6/1-16

Panic! Productions closes its second season with the musical comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, June 1 through 16, at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts in Thousand Oaks. The popular musical farce, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, is directed by Broadway veteran Joshua Finkel, with music direction by Diann Alexander and choreography by Mona King.

Forum is a frenetic romp based on the ancient Roman comedies of Plautus. This newly imagined production preserves the classic show's structure, music, and book, while creating an interesting new framing device. Tapping into the show's famous opening number, "Comedy Tonight," Finkel has crafted a show-within-a-show concept, where a 1966 theatre troupe is putting on the show on the first day the Uniform Time Act, which made Daylight Savings Time a national law, has taken effect. Some cast members have forgotten to move their clocks forward-and a bit of confusion and chaos ensues.

"When first approached to direct this show for Panic! Productions, I was immediately excited by the idea," says Finkel, whose work as an actor and director ranges from Broadway and London's West End to extensive film and television credits. "When I started to study the show more closely, I was enticed by its structure and how cleverly it blended the elements of classic bawdy Roman Comedy with our American versions of that genre-Burlesque and Vaudeville. I wanted to try something new that would maintain the show's wonderful structure and book, but create an interesting new context."

Appearing in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum are Silas Benjamin, P.J. Wong, Paul Panico, Lisa Gaston, Kurt Kemper, Amanda Wanamaker, Keith Moreton, John Gaston, Bob Decker, Andrew Metzger, Alexandra Gonzales, Jamie Baer, Danielle Samson, Michelle Miller, Shanni Tal, Amber Langford, Chava Caiyem, and Heidi Appe.

"Panic! Productions is particularly excited to welcome Joshua Finkel as director of this production, says company founder Paul Panico. "Joshua is one of the most talented directors and performers of musical theatre working in Los Angeles, and we are pleased that he is sharing his theatrical gifts with our local theatre troupe."

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum opens Saturday, June 1 at 8 pm and continues Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2 pm through June 16, with a special Thursday night performance at 8 pm on June 6. It is a season of spectacular National Tours featuring new shows fresh from Broadway and classic Broadway favorites. This noteworthy season full of sensational music kicks off with MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, a sparkling new production based on a legendary recording session; THEADDAMS FAMILY, a brand-new Broadway hit inspired by the classic television series; MAMMA MIA!, showcasing the magic of ABBA, with timeless songs and enchanting love; and WEST SIDE STORY, the revival of a classic musical filled with iconic dance numbers and unforgettable songs.

The curtain rises on the new season of shows November 5-10, 2013, with MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. This smash-hit musical was inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock 'n' roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time. MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock 'n' roll hits including, "Blue Suede Shoes," "Fever," "That's All Right," "Great Balls of Fire," "Walk the Line, "Hound Dog" and more.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY takes the stage on December 3-8, 2013. Based upon the 1960s TV series of the same name, THE ADDAMS FAMILY has been resurrected in this new Broadway show that everyone is dying to see. This magnificently macabre musical comedy was created by the authors of Jersey Boys, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The show focuses on Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, who has fallen for a "normal" boy, much to the horror of her parents, Gomez and Morticia. The resulting story is delightful fun for everyone.

The third offering at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is the theatrical event MAMMA MIA!, January 14-19, 2014. Five time Tony Awards nominee,MAMMA MIA! is the ultimate feel-good show. Writer Catherine Johnson's sunny, funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years before. BWW Reviews: SPAMALOT Entertains with Killer Rabbits, Taunting Frenchmen and Show-Stopping Musical Numbers

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, Monty Python's SPAMALOTis the outrageous musical comedy lovingly ripped off from the 1975 film classic "Monty Python and The Holy Grail." The original cast recording of won the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

Based on the Tony Award-winning direction of Mike Nichols, with a book by Eric Idle and music and lyrics by the Grammy Award-winning team of Mr. Idle and John Du Prez, SPAMALOT tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table in 932AD as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen and show-stopping musical numbers are just a few of the reasons audiences everywhere are eating up this production at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center through April 19.

The small stage production works beautifully thanks to the crisp and sharp direction by Sean P. Harrington with musical direction by Gary Poirot, cleverly comical choreography by Beck Castells, a wide array of farcical costumes designed by Ziona Goren, and a multi-level multi-media set designed by Chris Slack.

Triple-threat actor/singer/dancer John Dantona is a wonder in the pivotal role of Arthur. His energy is infectious, leading his knights heroically through verbal as well as physically battles (and dances) with a wide assortment of tormentors. Stephen Weston shines as Arthur's loyal sidekick and cocoanut shell horseman, Patsy, especially during their heartwarming rendition of "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" during their search for shrubbery to appease the Knights who say Ni. What a show-stopping number complete with tap dancing Knights under twirling umbrellas!

Powerful, dulcet-voiced Darienne Gross is Arthur's love interest, the Lady of the Lake, giver of his sword Excalibur, who displays the perfect diva attitude during her lament, "What Happened to My Part." After she transforms Dennis into Sir Galahad (Nicholas Herbst), their duet "The Song That Goes Like This" celebrates, as well as makes fun of, the love ballad in every show that ends with a kiss.

Sir Robin (Austin Miller) , a collector of plague victims, and Lance (Nick Ferguson), a large, handsome and incredibly violent man, meet as Lance attempts to dispose of the sickly Not Dead Fred (Julian Comeau) in "He Is Not Dead Yet). They agree to become Knights of the Round Table together, Lance for the fighting, and Robin for the singing and the dancing. Both actors bring such fun to their roles throughout the show, especially Miller during "Brave Sir Robin" and "You Won't Succeed on Broadway" followed by Ferguson's charming and so-relevant lifestyle duet with Prince Herbert.

The hard-working and forever costume changing ensemble is to be commended for their hilarious varied characters and enchanting dance numbers. From their Laker Girls and Moulin Rouge Can-Can Dancers, to their Las Vegas style showgirls, the four women in the ensemble brought a real sense of joy in performing for an audience every time they took the stage. And the four men were a riot, especially as the dead bodies, rude Frenchmen, Sleepy and Stupid guards commanded to guard Prince Herbert by his overbearing father, the head-bonking monks, their very harmonic Knights in "All for One' on the night when all Knights unite, and so many more!

Even though SPAMALOT takes jabs at every possible nationality and religion, the show's positive message rings true in the end. Everyone has their own Holy Grail to pursue in life and whatever it is for you, just go for it and always look on the bright side of life because things work out in the end. Kudos to the cast and crew for making this production work magnificently from start to finish!

LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL Opens 7/19 in Thousand Oaks

Elle Woods is going to Harvard, and making her Thousand Oaks and regional professional debut as LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL, takes the stage at the Civic Arts Plaza. This funny and heartwarming story of the college student who fights for her dignity, and finds herself along the way, has been turned from a popular movie into a bubbly and energetic Broadway show. Benefitting greatly from the original Broadway choreography of Tony Winner Jerry Mitchell (KINKY BOOTS, HAIRSPRAY), LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL makes its regional professional premiere when it opens on Friday, July 19th, 2013, and plays until Sunday, July 28th, at the 1,800-seat Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, located at 2100 Thousand Oaks Boulevard in Thousand Oaks.

Like Elle Woods herself, LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL surprises with a sassy and positive attitude and deceptive smarts. With music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and a book by Heather Hach, LEGALLY BLONDE follows the story of Elle Woods (played in the movie by Reese Witherspoon), a college graduate underestimated by everyone - especially herself - who takes on Harvard Law School with charm, humor and wit.

The story begins as Elle Woods graduates from U.C.L.A., so it's only appropriate that Cabrillo's production of LEGALLY BLONDE stars an actual U.C.L.A. student. Emma Degerstedt, who starred in the original production of THIRTEEN at the Mark Taper Forum, plays Elle, and she's joined by Matt Bauer as Emmett, John D. LeMay as Professor Callahan, and Lowe Taylor as Paulette. Natalie Storrs of Simi Valley, and recent star of Cabrillo's CHARLIE BROWN, co-stars as Vivienne. And, in the pivotal role of Bruiser, Elle's dog and confidante, is Frankie. Frankie, trained by Tony Award-winning Bill Berloni, has logged more performances as Bruiser than any canine - or human - performer in LEGALLY BLONDE history.

Like all of the animals trained by William Berloni for Broadway shows such as LEGALLY BLONDE, ANNIE and others, Frankie is a rescue animal. In that spirit, Cabrillo Music Theatre continues its nationally-recognized "Beyond the Footlights" Animal Rescue program, in which many organizations from across the community bring their animals to the Civic Arts Plaza at all performances. In past productions, Cabrillo Music Theatre has found homes for dozens of in-need animals, as well as helped to drive up donations for the organizations that do such good work, and LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL promises even more successful additions to families.

Recreating the choreography of Jerry Mitchell, who recently added two nominations for Broadway's KINKY BOOTS to his impressive achievements, is Director Tiffany Engen. Engen, who performed in the Broadway and National Tours of LEGALLY BLONDE, will be joined by Musical Director Darryl Archibald.

"LEGALLY BLONDE is the perfect Cabrillo Music Theatre show," says Lewis Wilkenfeld, Cabrillo's Artistic Director. "It's brand new - never played in the Civic Arts Plaza, never performed professionally in the area - but with the kind of characters that populate the classics - people you can root for." Wilkenfeld believes the cast, culled from an audition of over 500 local actors, will dazzle audiences as well. "This is what Cabrillo does best - Broadway in your Backyard, but with an original and local spin and energy that connects performers and audience." Adds Wilkenfeld, "Some people perceive Elle Woods' story as a female one, but I think audiences - male and female alike - will love this show as much as I do!"

When Blanche DuBois, a fading Southern belle whose pretensions to virtue only thinly mask her alcoholism and delusions of grandeur, arrives at her sister Stella's French Quarter apartment, her intent is simple: to take some time off from her stressful teaching career and break the news about the unfortunate loss of the beloved family plantation. But Blanche's thinly-veiled veneer is suddenly cracked by Stella's husband, Stanley Kowalski. Stanley is a true force of nature: primal, rough-hewn, brutish, and sensual. Their collision course threatens to take down everyone in its path in a clash of lies, propriety, madness, and primal instinct.

Mariachi Divas Debut in Thousand Oaks Tonight

The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Foundation presents MARIACHI DIVAS in the Fred Kavli Theatre at 8:00 pm tonight, May 3, 2013.

Directed and founded by trumpet player Cindy Shea in 1999, the Mariachi Divas have made big waves on the national and international music scene. With eight albums, four Grammy
nominations, one Latin Grammy nomination and one Grammy Award under their belts, the Mariachi Divas are a unique, multicultural, all-female ensemble, imbued with the true flavor of Los Angeles and have been represented by women of Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Argentinean,
Colombian, Panamanian, Puerto Rican, Swiss, Japanese, Honduran, Guatemalan, Salvadorian, Peruvian, Tongan and Anglo descents. Their most recent Grammy Award was in 2009 for Best
Regional Mexican Album of the year for their release of Canciones De Amor. This marked the first time in the history of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences that an all-female mariachi group had been a nominee and a winner.

In addition to their musical career, the Divas have appeared in independent films including Dead Man's Shoe, Ren and La Dentista, in which music from their CD was used in the movie's soundtrack. The Divas' rendition of the Ricky Martin hit, "La Bomba" was used in the 2008 film Julia.
