AEG Live has announced that the southern gothic, supernatural musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, written by Stephen King, with music by John Mellencamp and T Bone Burnett, has confirmed a tour of 20 American cities throughout the Midwest and Southeast beginning October 10 in Bloomington, IN, and ending November 6 in Grand Rapids, MI. Tickets go on sale today, May 17 at 10am at aeglive.com.

This extraordinary collaboration, 13 years in the making, is a haunting tale of fraternal love, lust, jealousy and revenge, which will be performed by an ensemble cast of 15 actors and a four-piece live band. The album of the musical will be released on June 4 via Hear Music and the Concord Music Group. Complete tour dates are below.

The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County saga began when Mellencamp told King about a cabin on his land inIndiana where two brothers had gotten in a fight over a girl; one brother accidentally killing the other, only to die along with the girl in a car crash a short time later. King came up with an outline for a play in a matter of days. And then off and on, back and forth, they began to develop it into a full-length musical.

The superb blues 'n' roots music of Ghost Brothers reflects the wide range of styles and influences needed for a work that jumps back and forth across decades. Rather than use the songs to propel the play's narrative, as in a conventional musical, Mellencamp chose to make them a way to reveal the emotions and inner workings of the characters.

Set in the tiny town of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi, the Ghost Brothers' story centers on two sets of brothers: the ghosts of Jack and Andy, dead in an apparent murder/suicide, and their nephews, the living Frank and Drake, who seem to be headed toward the same downward spiral as their uncles. Joe, younger brother of Jack and Andy, father of Frank and Drake, has decided it's time to reveal his own terrible secret at the site of the tragedy, before it's too late.

As the story emerged during the writing of the musical, it became clear to the collaborators that Ghost Brothers had taken them into unfamiliar territory - and they liked it that way. "John can make rock & roll records and I can write books for the rest of our lives," says King, "but that's the safe way to do it, and that's no way to live if you want to stay creative. We were willing to be educated, and at our age, that's an accomplishment."

Putting King's words and Mellencamp's songs on the stage is in the skilful hands of acclaimed director Susan Booth, who calls the musical a "a kind of new age travelling Medicine Show." "This is a gothic story-driven rock concert," says Booth. "I want the emphasis to be on this fantastic score and our great singers and how the story advances us from song to song. In most musicals, the songs advance the narrative. With Ghost Brothers, the story will advance the songs."

Scott Emmons Named Dean of UWM's Peck School of the Arts

Scott Emmons has been named dean of the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). Emmons, a professor of music education, joined the UWM faculty in 1992. He has served as interim dean of the Peck School during the 2012-13 Year of the Arts at UWM, a celebration of the Peck School's 50th anniversary.

"Scott is a solid citizen of this university and has already demonstrated his commitment to UWM students, faculty and staff, and to the Milwaukee arts community," said UWM Chancellor Michael R. Lovell. "I have every confidence in his ability to lead the Peck School of the Arts forward."

Emmons is a widely sought clinician in the field of technology for music educators. He is one of the founders of the national New Horizons Band for Senior Adults program. Emmons has guest conducted and presented workshops throughout the United States and in Australia.

His work is represented in over 30 books published by Silver Burdett Ginn, The National Association for Music Education (MENC) and GIA Publications. Emmons also is the author of articles published in the Music Educators Journal, Teaching Music and the Wisconsin School Musician. He is also the author of articles published in the Music Educators Journal, Teaching Music Magazine, and Wisconsin School Musician.

He has served as a regional representative to the Music Educators National Conference and the state council of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association.

Emmons holds several degrees in music education, including a PhD from Eastman School of Music, master of music from Northwestern University and bachelor's of science from Southwest Minnesota State University. His public school experience includes band directing and teaching general music in both Wisconsin and Minnesota.

"I'm proud of the work done by Peck School of the Arts students, faculty, and staff," said Emmons. "The school serves as an important artistic and economic catalyst in the Milwaukee area and the state. I look forward to continuing my work with my colleagues to help the school expand on successes in art-making, arts education and entrepreneurship."

As Wisconsin's premier public urban institution, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee enjoys a growing national reputation for excellence in research, teaching and community engagement. On an operating budget of $700 million, it educates nearly 30,000 students and is an engine of innovation for Southeastern Wisconsin. Dixie Longate Set to Tour Milwaukee Landmarks, 5/15

Dixie Longate, star of Dixie's Tupperware Party, will be touring Milwaukee landmarks during her press tour on Wednesday, May 15 with transportation by Bell Ambulance. Marcus Center For The Performing Arts Releases Updated Schedule for LIVE @ PECK PAVILION

The Marcus Center for the Performing Arts announces a change in the line up of the 2013 Live @ Peck Pavilion series in Marcus Center's Peck Pavilion that will kick off this July. This series, which started last summer, will now feature The Spirit Family Reunion on Tuesday, August 20 at 7:30 pm. The series will also include types of performances the Center typically presents inside the building on its newly updated grounds. This is a way for the Marcus Center to invite the public to sample the arts in a marvelous setting for a nominal cost.

Performances are Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. starting on July 23 and will run through August 27. Reserved seating prices are available in the bowl only. A season ticket package is available for $60. Single seat tickets are $15 and are on sale on Thursday, May 30. Tickets are available in person at the Marcus Center Box Office at 929 North Water Street, Downtown Milwaukee, by calling 414-273-7206, online at MarcusCenter.org or Ticketmaster.com. August 27: Red Baraat

Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Milwaukee Playwright Neil Haven's COME BACK Gets Reading at Arcade Theatre, 5/4-5

Come Back, a comedy about death, by Milwaukee playwright Neil Haven, will have a unique two-show staged reading tonight, May 4th at 8pm and Sunday May 5th at 2pm at the Arcade Theatre in the Underground Collaborative at the Grand Avenue Mall.

The cast includes Jim Pickering, Deborah Clifton, Laura Gray, Karen Estrada, and Dan Katula. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved online at http://ucmke.org or purchased at the door. One ticket gains admission to both shows. Audience members are encouraged to see both performances, as the genders of the characters will be different.

Audience members will be invited to take part in the development of the play. After each show there will be a discussion and feedback session with the playwright and cast to help with final revisions of the script. Beer and wine will be available.

Sky, a mild-mannered graphic designer prone to anxiety attacks, is compelled to trek across the country "with an elderly parrot and his friend in a bucket." Sky's closest friend, a bird rehabber named Erin, recently succumbed to cancer and left a surprise in her will: Sky is responsible for choosing what to do with her remains. Before she died, Erin planned a road trip which delivers Sky to all of the unconventional places and people that will do something kooky with one's cremains. From infused bullets to a launch into low orbit, Sky must choose the most fitting final resting place for his lost companion. Upon satisfactory completion of the incredible journey, he will receive the bulk of her estate.

Erin thoroughly attended to every detail of the journey, but forgot to consider one factor: her mother. Val would much prefer that her daughter be interred in the extensive family cemetery plot. Unable to override Erin's legally-protected last wishes, Val tracks down Sky and joins him on the trip, hoping to sway his opinion toward the traditional burial choice. Coupled oddly, they embark on a journey in Erin's memory to explore grief, death, souls, and soul mates.

Double Casting - Gender Flexibility: All of the main characters in Come Back may be performed as either male or female. The gender pronouns used in the above synopsis are all flexible. Sky may be a woman; Val May be Aaron's father or his/her mother. The staged reading will be double-cast so that audiences can see two versions of the play. Audience members are encouraged to attend both shows to experience the change. For example, the protagonist will be female for one show and male for the next.

The variance in gender results in curious changes in the audiences' preconceptions about the character relationships. Certain lines and moments take on different meaning. People have very different notions about a male-female companionship versus a female-female companionship, a strained father-son relationship versus mother-daughter. The changes enhance the themes resonant with the current societal shift in ideas concerning the freedom to define our own relationships, marriages, love, and companionship.

Neil Haven is the author of Who Killed Santa?, Stuck, The Playdaters, and Pink Champagne among others. His work has been seen in Wisconsin: In Tandem Theatre, Uprooted Theatre, Kohl's Wild Theatre, Pink Banana, The Brumder Mansion, UW-Whitewater, and other theatres around the country: Secret Theatre (NYC,) Chicago Fringe Festival, Nevada Conservatory Theatre, Freshwater Theatre (Minneapolis,) Matchbox Theatre (Philadelphia) and Bluebarn Theatre (Omaha,) among others.
