ONCE ON THIS ISLAND is a contemporary, Caribbean-flavored musical by the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty based upon the book My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy.ONCE ON THIS ISLAND is the highly original and theatrical adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid. In almost non-stop song and dance, the show tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.ONCE ON THIS ISLAND is a director's dream, with achievable requirements. Its small band and minimal sets and costumes will capture the imagination of the audience. Its catchy, contemporary, tender ballads and rousing celebratory numbers are ideal for an ensemble cast of strong singers.

Bootless Stageworks presents the Tony Award Winning and Pulitzer Prize winning hit musical, "Next to Normal", in support of Delaware Mental Health Awareness Month. Its story concerns a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life. Next to Normal received several workshop performances before it debuted off-Broadway in 2008, winning the Outer Critics' Circle Award for Outstanding Score and receiving nominations for Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Actress (Alice Ripley) and Outstanding Score. After an Off-Broadway run, the show then played at the Arena Stage in its temporary venue in Arlington, Virginia from November 2008 to January 2009. The musical opened on Broadway in April 2009 and was nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards, winning three - Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming just the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. In awarding the prize to Kitt and Yorkey, the Pulitzer Board called the show "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals." Bootless's production features a stellar cast of rising stars in the region's professional theater scene, as well as some new faces. The show features Jennifer Huth, Mark Dixon, Valarie Jonkoff and Corey Buller as members of the Goodman Family, Daniel Kiernan as Henry, and John Jerbasi as Dr. Fine/Dr. Madden. Delaware Theatre Company Opens MY MOTHER'S ITALIAN, MY FATHER'S JEWISH & I'M IN THERAPY!, 5/8

The international hit comedy MY MOTHER'S ITALIAN, MY FATHER'S JEWISH & I'M IN THERAPY!, starring Steve Solomon, will arrive at the Delaware Theatre Company for a 3-week engagement, May 8 through May 26, 2013.

Described as "One part lasagna, one part kreplach, and two parts Prozac," you don't have to be Jewish or Italian to love this show. All you need is to know what it feels like to leave a family dinner with heartburn and a headache! MY MOTHER'S ITALIAN, MY FATHER'S JEWISH & I'M IN THERAPY! played for two years in New York City and has toured internationally in more than 100 cities.

Written and performed by the playwright and star of the original New York production - award-winning actor and writer Steve Solomon - the hilarious one-man comedy is based on the author's life growing up in a wacky family noted for its bi-ethnic diversity and aptitude for dysfunctional behavior, and all the people in his life whose sole purpose was to drive him into therapy! Solomon, whose mother is from Palermo and whose father is from Russia, grew up as one of two siblings in Brooklyn, NY.

AS220's Umberto Crenca Will Be Keynote Speaker at Wilmington Renaissance Corp's 2013 Meeting Today

Wilmington Renaissance Corporation (WRC) is pleased to announce Umberto Crenca, renowned founder and artistic director of AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island, as its keynote speaker at WRC's Annual Meeting: Bringing Big Ideas to Life, being held today, April 24, 2013, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at World Cafe Live at The Queen, 500 N. Market Street, Wilmington.

"We are thrilled to have Bert Crenca as our keynote speaker," said Carrie W. Gray, WRC Managing Director. "What he has done for Providence will inspire our arts partners - and the entire community - to envision even more exciting possibilities for Wilmington."

Mr. Crenca, a visual artist, is the founder and artistic director of AS220, a nonprofit center established in Providence in 1985 to provide a local forum and home for the arts, and dedicated to supporting and presenting unjuried and uncensored visual art, music, and poetry. The organization maintains 19 artist live/work and studio spaces, five galleries, and two performance spaces, and has established a powerful presence in the Downtown Arts and Entertainment District. Mr. Crenca is committed to the revitalization of downtown Providence, and plays an important role in community efforts across the region. He serves on the Mayor's Art, Culture + Tourism Advisory Board, and is a past member of the Providence School Board. In the past two decades, Mr. Crenca has been a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, The Urban Institute, The Ford Foundation, LEF Foundation, Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Connecticut Council on the Arts, the New England Artists' Trust, and the Creative Cities Summit. When they discover that their high school music program was going to be cut from the curriculum, they decide to do a benefit to raise money. On the way to pick up their custom made plaid tuxedos and skirts, their bus is struck by lightning. Timeless. Enchanting. Impactful. These three words clearly describe the classic musical SOUTH PACIFIC, playing at the DTC stage now through May 5th. From the hauntingly beautiful first three notes of "Bali Hai" to the romance of "Some Enchanted Evening," it's no surprise that this Rodgers & Hammerstein favorite is one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time. Directed by Executive Director Bud Martin, SOUTH PACIFIC marks DTC's first production of a large-scale classic musical, with a cast of 26, including 5 local children, and a full14 piece orchestra. Not only is this the first cast of this size in recent DTC history, but the show also promises one of the most stunning and clever set designs by Scenic Designer Dirk Durosette, incorporating both a functional jeep and the recreation of a World War II plane. The cast boasts a large number of Philadelphia-based actors, with regional talent performing alongside Broadway veterans.

The Creative Team includes Choreographer and Vocal Director Sonny Leo, Music Director/Conductor Johanna Schloss, Costume Designer Millie Hiibel, Sound Designer Carl Casella, and Lighting Designer David Todaro.

SOUTH PACIFIC includes music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. Based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific, the musical draws from multiple story elements in the text. The original Broadway production opened in April of 1947, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950 and gathering ten Tony Awards. The 2008 Broadway revival at Lincoln Center followed in these footsteps, winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival.

Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices. This deeply-felt drama remains as relevant today as it was in 1949, featuring such timeless favorites as "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," "This Nearly Was Mine," and "There is Nothin' Like a Dame."
