It's Monday! Which means it's either a day off or a travel day, and since we had been lucky to be in Salt Lake City for a couple of weeks, today is a travel day to Little Rock, Arkansas.

Since the distance between Salt Lake and Little Rock is pretty far, we had a Friday matinee in Salt Lake and no Sunday night show (the usual tour schedule is evening shows Tuesday through Friday with 2 shows Saturday and Sunday) so that the tour could load out right after the 1 p.m. matinee and get in the trucks and make its way to Little Rock, Arkansas.

Last night I discovered the new app "Vine" which is a new social networking, kind of like Instagram, but with videos! It's pretty fun and all videos have a max of like 7 seconds. What's amazing is how creative people can get with these videos. I invite you to explore and also follow me to see what kind of shenanigans happen on travel days and behind the scenes of this tour. I must warn you: I'm a cheesy guy with cheesy jokes. You have been warned.

I'm excited to get to Arkansas because in 2003 I had the pleasure of playing the role of Tulsa in the Arkansas Repertory Theatre's production of Gypsy, and I stayed there for a couple of months. I have many friends there and so it's nice to return 10 years later with this show. We are sadly only there for one week, but that is still plenty of time to rediscover my old haunts (Flying Saucer) and discover new places.

I also want to note the incredible talent that we have in this show. Not only do all cast members shine in their multitude of roles, but they shine in their understudy assignments as well! John Rochette, who usually plays Norm and other roles, was on all week as Nick Massi. We had a blast both onstage and off, and it was great to discover new moments on stage.

2013 Arkansas New Play Festival Begins Today

TheatreSquared presents the lineup for the 2013 Arkansas New Play Festival, the theatre's fifth annual celebration of bold new works for the stage.The festival will feature staged reading performances of four plays by professional playwrights, a showcase of ten-minute plays by Arkansas high school students, and Northwest Arkansas's seventh annual 24-Hour Play-Off.

For the first time, the Arkansas New Play Festival is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Tickets are $7 (staged reading performances), $10 (The 24 Hour Play-Off), or $30 for a New Play Pass including all festival events, and they can be reserved by calling the Walton Arts Center Box Office at (479) 443-5600 or online at theatre2.org. Through a new "Month of New Plays" partnership with the University of Arkansas Department of Drama, New Play Pass buyers may also add admission to six new work performances by UA students for just $10. Performances will take place at Walton Arts Center's Nadine Baum Studios (505 W. Spring St., Fayetteville). Each new play reading will be followed by a conversation with the playwright, director and cast.

"Four leading playwrights are bringing scripts in raw form to Northwest Arkansas this June," said T2 Artistic Director Robert Ford. "We're thrilled to match them with TheatreSquared's artists and audience and help shape these bold new works. If you love storytelling and great theatre, this is a weekend you won't want to miss."

Two 11-year-old boys-a hero and his sidekick-set out on a quixotic quest through the streets of the Lower East Side to locate the missing Twin Towers. A raw, comic fable that draws on the Columbian-American experience in New York, this new play shines a bright light on social hypocrisies and the adventurous spirit of youth.

RAW VISION, by Les Wade - Friday, June 14, 8:30pm
An African-American brother and sister, both 30-something, live a ramshackle existence well off the grid in southern Louisiana. She is the brilliant, if deeply conflicted, caretaker of her artist brother, whose paintings have recently begun to turn up on the New Orleans art scene. When an outside interloper - who can't seem to keep his story straight - insinuates himself into their close-knit world, all three lives are changed forever. A gorgeously poetic drama, Raw Vision will remind many of the Oscar-nominated film, Beasts of the Southern Wild, in its heartfelt portrayal of a stubbornly offbeat way of life.

IF I DID THIS, by E.M. Lewis - Saturday, June 15, 6:30pm
A brainy, edge-of-your-seat thriller about a ghost writer, an acquitted murder suspect who is his subject, and the literary editor who may (or may not) be his best friend in the world. A brilliantly theatrical jigsaw puzzle, this play goes to the heart of the question, "What is truth?" - or maybe, "Whose 'truth' is really true?" Part film noir, part theatrical tease, If I Did This will toy with your perceptions and touch your heart.

SWIMMING WITH VAN GOGH, by Susan Felder - Saturday, June 15, 8:30pm
Set in a lighthouse just off the coast of Lake Superior, Swimming with Van Gogh tells the story of a middle-aged painter who stumbles into sudden prominence, only to come face-to-face with her own worse doubts-not to mention an old flame, a mid-career artist who knows just how to keep her off-balance. When an adoring young art student invades her lighthouse retreat, the chemistry becomes overpowering. This play takes a profound look at the possibility, and impossibility, of originality and renewal as an artist.

In partnership with the University of Arkansas Brown Chair of Literacy, TheatreSquared is proud to present, for the fourth year, the Arkansas Young Playwrights Showcase. Students from across the state have been invited to submit scripts, and six will be selected for public readings at the Arkansas New Play Festival.

THE 24-HOUR PLAY-OFF - Sunday, June 16, 6:30pm
TheatreSquared is partnering with Fayetteville-based Ceramic Cow Productions to present the Northwest Arkansas 24-Hour Play-Off, a perennial favorite for artists and audiences alike. Teams of artists will write, rehearse, and perform a new ten-minute play, all within the space of 24 hours, in competition for a grand prize sponsored by local businesses.

Through a new partnership with the University Theatre at the University of Arkansas, the 2013 Arkansas New Play Festival will be offered together with six additional student performances scheduled throughout June by professional artists-in-training at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. A $40 "Month of New Plays" Package will include admission to all TheatreSquared's Arkansas New Play Festival events and to student performances scheduled at 7:30pm on June 7, 8, 19, 20, 22, 23, 26, and 27. Audra McDonald Kicks Off GO BACK HOME Summer, Fall 2013 Tour

According to Audra McDonald's official website, the singer will be taking her first solo album in seven years, Go Back Home, on a national tour. Go Back Home was released May 21 on Nonesuch Records. McDonald's new tour dates across North America will kick off with a performance at the Midland Center for the Arts in Midland, MI, tonight, June 8. Scroll down for a full list of tour dates!

Go Back Home features songs by composers with whom Audra has long been associated (Adam Guettel, LaChiusa, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim) and some, like the Kander & Ebb title track, relatively new to her repertoire; in addition, Audra continues to champion works by an emerging generation of composers, represented on this recording by Adam Gwon, Heisler and Goldrich, and Will Reynolds.

After four seasons spent in Los Angeles playing Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC's hit medical drama Private Practice, the acclaimed singer and actress returned to New York and Broadway last year, winning her record-tying fifth Tony Award for her role in The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. With Go Back Home, the Grammy Award-winning soprano, whose voice Stephen Sondheim has hailed as "one of the glories of the American theater," makes her highly anticipated return to recording, presenting her most personal album to date.

Born into a musical family, McDonald grew up in Fresno, California, where as a child she began singing in her local community theater (her first audition piece was Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Edelweiss," which she has recorded for Go Back Home). A year after graduating from Juilliard, she won her first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for Carousel. She won two additional Tonys in that category, for Terrence McNally's play Master Class (1996) and his musical Ragtime (1998), earning her an unprecedented three Tony Awards before the age of 30. In 2004 she won her fourth, for A Raisin in the Sun, and in 2012 she won her fifth Tony and her first in the leading actress category for her role in The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. (Julie Harris and Angela Lansbury are the only other people to have won five performance Tony Awards.)

A familiar face on PBS, McDonald has headlined telecasts including an American Songbook season-opening concert, a presentation of Sondheim's Passion, a tribute concert to Rodgers and Hammerstein titled Something Wonderful, and four galas with the New York Philharmonic: a New Year's Eve performance in 2006, a concert celebrating Sondheim's 80th birthday, Carnegie Hall's 120th Anniversary Concert, and, most recently, "Marvin Hamlisch: One Singular Sensation," a New Year's Eve tribute to the late composer. She was also featured in the PBS television special "A Broadway Celebration: In Performance at the White House," singing at the request of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. This season McDonald hosts nine telecasts as part of her new role with Live From Lincoln Center.

Community Theatre of Little Rock to Close 57th Season with LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL, 7/12-28

The Community Theatre of Little Rock is pleased to close out its 57th season with its Summer Musical "Legally Blonde: The Musical" by Heather Hach, Laurence O'Keefe, and Nell Benjamin. Show dates are July 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 26th and 27th at 7:30 pm and July 14th, 21st and 28th at 2pm, to be held at The Public Theatre, located at 616 Center Street, next to Horn's Men's Store in downtown Little Rock.

Regular admission is $16 for adults and $14 for military, students and seniors age 65 and over. Groups of 10 or more can get in for $14. Children age six and under are given free admission. Bring a pair of gently used running shoes and receive $1.00 off your admission.

The Legally Blonde cast has scheduled a 'Pocket Preview'* of the show July 11th at 7:30pm. On this one night, admission is whatever the patron can pay. *CTLR's "Pocket Previews" are actually final dress rehearsals which are open to the public. No admission is required, but we will be accepting donations to support the theatre. No reservations will be accepted, as seating is strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This Season, CTLR is partnering with Go! Running Athletic Shoe Store, Little Rock Road Runner's Club and the Running Reshoe Program to collect new and gently used shoes. "A Mile in Their Shoes" campaign has already kicked off, but theater goers can help CTLR collect shoes with this performance. In exchange for their donation, patrons will receive $1 off the admission price. Donations will be collected and distributed to organizations like Our House, CASA, local High Schools and other under-served areas. Harvard's beloved blonde takes the stage by pink storm in this fun, upbeat musical about self-discovery. Based on the adored movie, LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL stays true to form with a peppy score and playful book. This musical is ridiculously enjoyable from start to finish.
Elle Woods appears to have it all. Her life is turned upside-down, however, when her boyfriend dumps her so he can start getting serious about his life and attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle uses her charm to get into Harvard Law. At school, she struggles with peers, professors, and Warner Huntington. With the help of Paulette and Emmett, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.

The 'G2K' Getting To Know Series: Uniquely adapted musicals specifically for youth performers. If you thought you knew the story of 'The Princess and The Pea,' you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that it may not have been the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of beguiling songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are, you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again. In this adaptation for pre-high school students, the content has been edited to better suit younger actors and audiences, but all the magic, hilarity and fun of the original are still in place. G2K? ONCE UPON A MATTRESS is the perfect show to introduce young people to the magic of live theater.
