Florida State Thespians Raise $44,041 for BC/EFA

Florida State Thespians banded together yet again this school year to raise $44,041 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a record-setting year for them and more than any other education-based organization in the country.

Florida's high school theatre students have been committed to raising funds for Broadway Cares since 1999. This year's total broke the organization's previous one-year total of $33,000 set in 2007 and brings the Florida Thespians' all-time grand total to $420,734.

"For 14 years the students and theatre educators in Florida have shown tremendous generosity in their support of Broadway Cares," said Joe Norton, BC/EFA's director of education and outreach. "These students are affecting change by working together, raising awareness about HIV/AIDS in their schools and communities and making a difference for those who need help the most."

State Director Daron Hawkins, who's also a drama teacher at Riverview High School in Riverview, FL, called it "breathtaking" to see young people become so passionate about caring for others.

"The results of this year's Broadway Cares fundraising by the Florida State Thespians solidify my faith in young people and the arts," Hawkins said. "Where there is art, there is compassion."

Florida Thespians raise money on the local, district and state level, making it one of the most coordinated BC/EFA fundraising campaigns in educational theatre. Students raise money by selling ribbons, bracelets, buttons and T-shirts, hosting special auctions, impromptu performances and audience donations and creating an AIDS Walk just for Broadway Cares at the state festival.

Florida State Thespians are an affiliate of the Educational Theatre Association's International Thespian Society, the honorary organization for high school and middle school theatre students which last year topped $1 million in money raised for Broadway Cares.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS supports 26 AIDS and family services organizations in Florida and last year granted $192,500 to help provide medications, health care, nutritious meals and emergency financial assistance.

Since 1988 BC/EFA has raised more than $225 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.

Broadway Cares awards annual grants to more than 450 organizations nationwide and is the major supporter of the social service programs at The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative and the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic.

Carrollwood Players to Stage British Sketch Comedy GOOD EVENING, 7/21-29

This hilarious British sketch comedy opens this Friday, June 21st, at Carrollwood Players for a special two week run as the final Additional Mainstage Production of the 2012-2013 season. Good Evening by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore is directed by Jim Russell and Amy Ragg and runs June 21st to 29th, 2013.

An evening of sketch comedy written and originally performed on Broadway by iconic British comedians Dudley Moore (of Arthur fame) and Peter Cook. Lauded as the 'Founding Fathers of Modern British Humor', Moore and Cook have been credited as major inspirations to generations of Brit comedy stars, from Monty Python to French and Saunders and many more. Come laugh at their Tony Award winning shenanigans brought back to life by our very own comic geniuses, Eric Misener and John Watson.

You will be notified if there is a problem with your reservation. Reserved seats will be held until 15 minutes before show time. Carrollwood Players kicks off its Summer Comedy Theater Camp, running today, June 17 - 28 and July 8 - 19, 2013.

Come join us for the Carrollwood Players Summer Comedy Theatre Camp for ages 10-18. We have teamed with local improv troupe, Nine and Numb, to offer a summer full of laughs. We will focus on character building, improvisational technique, scene work, and writing for comedy. At the end of each session, we will present a showcase on the Carrollwood Players stage.

BWW Review: TAMPAWORKS 2013 - 'a SHOWCASE for NEWBIES'
June 9th, 2013 at 3P.M.

Tampa Bay, Florida is the setting for all eight short plays, presented this past weekend, at Stageworks in Tampa. Scripts were submitted from all over central Florida; and were evaluated by a panel of judges. The participating artists received only an honorarium; donating their talents to the production. All of the plays were produced by StageWorks with minimal set pieces and props. This was an exceptional opportunity for area playwrights and 'showcase for newbies'.

Play #1 'GHOSTS OF HYDE PARK', written by Matt Cowley and directed by Ronn Bobb-Semple. The scene revolved around the sale of a haunted house, in the Hyde Park section of Tampa. Joseph Parra played James, the realtor, with gusto and the bravura of a side show barker. Others in the cast were Noelle Muniz, Blake Counts, Stephen Bell, and Elizabeth Bell.

Play #2 'HIT AND RUN', written by Jack Gilhooley and directed by Ronn Bobb-Semple. The scene took place in St. Petersburg and revolved around a former player for The RAYS, who meets up with his former girlfriend, while meeting his 12 year old son, for the first time. This play was scattered with politically incorrect dialogue, cliché's and innuendos. Cast members included Tim Guerreri, Joanna Sycz, Josh Goff, and Josh Corjay.

Play #3 'NO TIES', written by Martin Tucker and directed by Angela Bond. The scene took place in an office and revolved around a young businessman with just one thing on his mind, his paramour, and a very helpful friend. Joseph Parra displayed a complete change of character, (from a former scene), as the compassionate friend, John Patterson. Cast members included Tim Guerreri and Sasha Ollen.

Play #4 'GEO-MUGGLED', written by Joie Marsh and directed by Kathy Buck. The scene takes place at a waterfront, of what I believe to have been Homosassa Springs, unless I missed hearing if the exact location was disclosed. It revolved around a grandfather, his daughter, her young son, and an investigating stranger. Bob Gonzalez as Henry, gave a natural and honest portrayal of the older benchwarmer. Other cast members included Samantha Eppes, Josh Corjay, and Suzy Devore.

Play #5 'GASPARILLA QUEEN', written by Dewey Davis-Thompson and directed by Kathy Buck. The scene takes place in South Tampa, on a split stage, divided by 2 bedrooms belonging to teenage best girlfriends. It revolves around a well to do teenager's parental challenges, involving an evening gown that her father chose for her, for the Gasparilla. Rachel Butterfield as Wendy, gave a very realistic performance as the 'poor little, rich girl'. Other cast members included Lytia Brooks, Suzy Devor, and Peter Konowicz.

Play #6 'CUSTOMER SERVICE', written by Phillip Hall and directed by Rosemary Orlando. The scene took place on a split stage, divided between a young gentleman's apartment and a Verizon customer service center. It revolved around the many challenges we all face with telephone customer service agents. This scene was written flawlessly, directed perfectly, with outstanding performances by Will Cespedes and Nicole Cavalani. This scene was clearly an audience favorite, rewarded with thunderous applause and cheering.

Play #7 'GUITAR MAN', written by Lloyd Wilson and directed by Rosemary Orlando. The scene takes place on a bench, near an assisted living facility. An activities director, meets up with a pajama-wearing, guitar -playing, senior citizen and strikes up a friendship. Cast members included Rick Stutzel and Joanna Sycz.

Play #8 'PLAY ME', written by Janet Scaglione and directed by Angela Bond. The scene takes place in the cafe piano bar, of the Columbia restaurant in Ybor City; and revolves around a provocative 'older woman', giving advise to a younger man. This scene was very well written and directed. Elizabeth Bell was radiant. All cast members, including Rodner Saigado, Will Cespedes, and Stephen Bell were outstanding in their roles.

TampaWorks is an evening of short plays set in Tampa Bay area locations. This year's TampaWorks is totally a Stageworks production. Playwrights from all over central Florida submitted scripts. The submissions were evaluated by a panel of judges, who chose eight short plays for the production. The production is being sponsored in part by Tucker/Hall, The Tampa Chamber Of Commerce and The Tampa Downtown Partnership. All Artists participating will receive an honorarium so are basically donating a substantial portion of their time and talents. BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek at this year's productions below!

GHOSTS OF HYDE PARK Matt Cowley

Matt writes and produces Radio Theater with WMNF, and is the host of Soundstage, WMNF's radio theater show. He is the sound designer and foley artist for the Radio Theatre Project Live. His radio plays have been syndicated nationally and won a Gold Medal for Best Regularly Scheduled Comedy Program at the New York Festivals. He is a member of the StageWrights playwriting group, and is the Web Manager for WMNF Community Radio and the president of Yeti Media.

HIT AND RUN (tied for first) Jack Gilhooley

New Dramatis alumnus, Jack Gilhooley has won 2 National Endowment for the Arts awards (Individual Artist and International to Centaur Theatre, Montreal), 2 Fulbright Guest Artist Fellowships (Spain and Ireland), a NY Foundation for The Arts grant, 2 Puffin Foundation awards, 4 Florida Arts Council Fellowships, Pilgrim Project, Carnegie Fund, PEN, Canada Council, Sarasota County Arts Council Ageless Creativity awards and the first ever John Ringling Fund Artists' Fellowship. He has been a guest playwright at The Eugene O'Neill Conference, Yaddo, MacDowell, Millay, Albee, Djerassi, and Hawthornden Castle (Scotland) Colonies and The Tyrone Guthrie Institute (Ireland). His plays have been performed and/or developed at Joseph Papp's Public Theatre, Asolo, Indiana Rep, The Folger (D.C.), Long Wharf, ACT/San Francisco, Mark Taper Forum, Shubert (Phila.), Theatre of The First Amendment, Victory Gardens, Culture Project, Manhattan Theatre Club, 59E59 Theatres, Samuel Beckett Theatre, Circle Rep, Nat Horne Theatre, South Street Theatre and on various other stages, colleges and universities. His works have been presented with the help of 5 Ford Foundation Development Endowments

NO TIES Martin Tucker

Dr. Tucker taught English and American Literature at Long Island University (both the Brooklyn Center and the C.W. Post campuses). He is now Professor Emeritus, having retired ten years ago from full-time teaching.

Served as Editor-in-Chief of the prize-winning literary journal, CONFRONTATION for 42 years. He retired from this position two years ago. Among his works, he published four collections poetry and six works of literary criticism, among them a study of Sam Shepard and the widely-praised LITERARY EXILE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. Was editor of more than 20 volumes of a literary encyclopedia. His fiction, essays, poetry and reviews have appeared in THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW, THE NATION, THE NEW REPUBLIC, THE COMMONWEAL, CHICAGO JEWISH FORUM, WEST AFRICA REVIEW, RESEARCH IN AFRICAN LITERATURES, EPOCH, BOULEVARD, NEW LETTERS, and elsewhere. .

A program of his one-act plays was produced in London, and is a former Longjohn Award winner.
He published the first book-length study in the United States of African Literature in English, AFRICA IN MODERN LITERATURE (New York, Frederick Ungar Company, 1967). He was a recipient the Chancellor's Award from Long Island University, a distinction given only six times in the history of the university. Received honors and grants from New York University, Long Island University, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Phi Beta Kappa, The MacDowell Colony, and PEN American Center.

He is 85 years old.

GEO-MUGGLED Joie Marsh

Joie Marsh is happy to return to StageWorks. Last year she performed in the TampaWorks' play Remembering Billy and is thankful for the opportunity to present her first play, Geo-muggled here this year. Joie holds a degree in Theatre Performance from Florida Southern College and has been seen in local productions such as Red Pepper at Venue Theatre, Angel Street at Pelican Players, Sealed for Freshness at Carrollwood Players, and most recently Almost, Maine with Showcase Arts Foundation Inc.

GASPARILLA QUEEN Dewey Davis-Thompson

Dewey Davis-Thompson currently has several plays in production in the Tampa Bay region including Gasparilla Queen at StageWorks in Tampa, Ganymede at the Studio@620 and Cosmic Significance: Atlantis on WMNF 88.5 FM.

CUSTOMER SERVICE Philip Hall

Philip Hall is the author and composer of musicals, 10-minute plays, and full-length plays. He won last year's Nantucket Short Play Festival, and has been a runner-up for the Humana Festival's Heideman Award and the New Play Network's SMITH prize. His musical Life On The Mississippi will receive a mainstage production at Workshop Theatre Company in New York this October. He lives on Longboat Key and is married to quilt artist Leslie A. Hall.

GUITAR MAN (tied for sixth) Lloyd Wilson

Lloyd Wilson's in Lorain Ohio in the shadow of a historic Lake Erie Lighthouse during a nor'easter storm--hence, "The Lighthouse Keeper Trilogy" would also be born. He is married to his muse, Janet, and they have two sons. In the 70's he was Art Director at The Journal, a newspaper in the Great Lakes region.Lloyd designed murals at Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio and wrote articles for Sign Craft. A novella about his grandfather, a charter captain lost on Lake Erie during a fierce nor'easter, was the catalyst for the "Keeper Trilogy." He's adapted the trilogy into a stage play; "The Last Keeper." He trained Disney Studio artists and wrote, produced and directed the comedy/mystery, "Fear on the Cusp." As a member of a New York Times bestselling author's writing/acting group, Lloyd realized his calling--stage and screenplays. From 2001 to the present, being the moderator of literary groups in Tarpon Springs FL, and creator of the "Knight Writers Society" where he's shared decades of writing experience with aspiring authors. He's completed an original screenplay entitled; "Viagra Finale" Lloyd, and producer/wife, Jan, active members of the FMPTA, are taking their newest dramedy, "Fragile Fate" throughout, Florida.

PLAY ME Janet Scaglioni

Her credentials are impressive, but her passion is persuasive. Dr. Janet Scaglione's engaging and theatrical style has been applauded by local and national audiences from business, industry, education, and government. Janet continues to evolve as an educator-activist, performer, composer, and playwright. Janet is a native of Tampa, Florida, married to her high school sweetheart and recovering mother of five. She recently left her career at USF, to pursue her artistic endeavors and to found The Broad's Way, LLC.

The first edition of TampaWorks took place in June, 2012. It was a production of the Stagewrights playwriting group and its sponsoring organization, Stageworks Theatre. In the fall of 2011, long-time member Ed Stevens proposed that Stagewrights for the first time undertake a group project. After much discussion, it was decided to use local settings for the plays, reasoning it would encourage attendance at the event without significantly limiting the playwrights' style or subject matter. It was also decided to make the production a fundraiser for Stageworks and that most of the participants would donate their time and talents. Performances took place June 8-9, 2012, to full houses and an enthusiastic response.
