Ben Folds, Zosia Mamet, Nikki M. James & More Set for 24 HOUR MUSICALS, Beg. Today

A team of nearly 100 stars from Broadway, film, television, and music will cast, write, compose, direct, rehearse, tech, and perform four original musicals - all in the obscenely short time between an evening meet-and-greet today, April 28 and show time on Monday, April 29 at 8pm. The 24 Hour Company is teaming with the Exchange, an off-Broadway theater company, to create the fifth-ever 24 Hour Musicals. The event benefits the Exchange's summer retreat, The Orchard Project, which kick-starts innovative new theatrical work from around the world.

The musicals will be written, cast, rehearsed, and performed at The Gramercy Theatre over the course of a single day, featuring an all-star line up of Broadway performers, stars from TV and film, great composers and writers, directors and - to top it all off - choreographers and musical directors. Participants will include singer-songwriter Ben Folds, Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock), Zosia Mamet (Girls), Josh Lawson (House of Lies), Deirdre Lovejoy (The Wire), Nikki M. James (TONY Award, Book of Mormon), Anthony Rapp (Rent, Without You), cabaret sensation Bridget Everett, Kristoffer Diaz (Chad Diety), Lisa Peterson (Obie Award, An Iliad), Jonathan Marc Sherman (Clive, Things We Want), Alicia Witt (Friday Night Lights, Law & Order), John Cariani (Law & Order, Fiddler on the Roof), Brian Crawley (Violet), Joe Iconis (The Black Suits), and Danny Goldstein (Godspell).

"This event produces enough adrenaline to power a normal person for at least a month. I can't wait for the rush - and I can't wait to see what these enormously talented people create," said Ari Edelson, the artistic director of the Exchange and the Orchard Project. "I am beyond grateful to everyone volunteering a day to help theater artists develop their next big ideas this coming summer at the Orchard Project."

The creative team will arrive at The Gramercy Theatre at 9 PM on Sunday, April 28 for a meet-and-greet. Each person brings a prop and a costume to inspire the writers. At 11 PM - after some singing, dancing, introductions, and "don't do this at home" warnings - the actors and directors go get some rest and the composers and book writers get to work. Completed musicals - with at least two songs each - are due by 7 AM. In the morning, directors, choreographers, and actors arrive for rehearsals. After a supersonic tech (with lights, costumes and sound) in the late afternoon, the audience arrives. The unconventional time constraints create a tremendous amount of energy. Although actors have only one day create characters, learn blocking, music and choreography, the musicals are performed without scripts in hand. The show starts at 8 PM, with an open bar courtesy of Monsieur Touton Selection and Diageo and VIP dinner from the wonderful new restaurant County, followed by an VIP after party at the Gansevoort Park Avenue Hotel.

The 24 Hour Musicals was the subject of a recent documentary, "One Night Stand," which premiered in January and which will be running at The Quad Cinema in New York City beginning on April 26, 2013. Fancy Footwork Set for FOOTLOOSE at Missoula Community Theatre, Now thru 5/12

Back in 1984, a teen-oriented movie with a strong emphasis on dancing became a box-office triumph. Footloose not only showcased a soundtrack loaded with rollicking numbers, it also had a relatable plotline about family, fear and self-growth which resonated with audiences of all ages.

Fourteen years later, Footloose, The Musical premiered on Broadway and a similar success ensued.

The Missoula Community Theatre's stage musical takes many of the film's themes and emphasizes their purpose, as well as introduces several new characters.

"There weren't all that many songs in the movie," said director Joe Martinez. "Our production has all the songs from the film, like 'Somebody's Eyes,' 'I Need a Hero' and 'Let's Hear It for the Boy,' plus new ones. We want all the songs to be driven by the story. We don't want to sidestep or overlook the heart and growth within the story."

Footloose tells the tale of Ren McCormick (Kyler Zundel), a teenager who moves from Chicago to 'Bomont', Texas (a spin on real-life Beaumont), after his father's death. He quickly finds out that the tiny town has a "no rock music or dancing" policy, initiated by the Rev. Shaw Moore (TJ Charlson) after four teenagers were killed in a post-dance auto accident. When Ren revolts against this edict, he draws the attention and, in time, the tenderness of Ariel (Quinn Vaira), Moore's high-spirited daughter.

"People forget that this was a beautiful, amazing story with strong family values," Martinez pointed out. "It shows the relationships between a husband and wife, a boyfriend and girlfriend, and a father and daughter. It touches on subjects such as integrity, responsibility and respect. It's not just a rock 'n roll show for kids."

The musical's score - melodies by Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow, with popular lyrics by Kenny Loggins - makes use of a number of styles, including country, rock, pop, R&B and blues.

Choreographer Heather Adams' dance numbers suit the show sweetly, as do all of the swaying, swinging dances she brings to life throughout the two-and-a-half-hour production for this agile-footed cast, including Footloose's opening and closing numbers.

With a large contingent of 'adult', 'rockin' and 'free' ensemble cast members, the Missoula Community Theatre's stage leaves as much free space as possible for dancing. To accomplish this, Martinez uses spare and low-profile set pieces. He also made the decision not to pander the action to 1980's nostalgia.

"You know," says Martinez. "Many plays parody, or make fun of, or even caricature the 1980's. I plan on focusing on the story and not parodying the time."

For a product that began as a mode of teen escapism, the story of Footloose still thrives with aspiration, hope, and a plea for empathy and tolerance, Martinez said.

Indeed, everyone in this show learns precious life lessons and develops character.

"Footloose is a celebration of life," says Martinez.

The University of Montana School of Theatre & Dance is pleased to offer The Comedy of Errors, one of the Bard's most lively plays. The Comedy of Errors runs in the Masquer Theatre of the Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center on campus April 30-May 4 and May 7-11 at 7:30 p.m.

Shakespeare's most outrageous farce remains the quintessential play about mistaken identity.
Not one, but two sets of twins separated at birth unwittingly converge upon Ephesus, a coastal
town on Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the four main islands of the British Virgin Islands:
one master and servant who've lived there their entire lives; one master and servant from
Syracuse who arrive to search for their long-lost brothers. Wordplay and slapstick abound when
appearances deceive companions and family alike and the visitors from Syracuse wander the
town in a sustained state of bewilderment over Ephesian culture and rules. Before long, everyone questions his own sanity. A furiously funny day of confusion results in classically dramatic revelations and a hilarious happy ending.
