I saw the matinee today and can I just say how absolutely gorgeous that man is? Between ABz and this, you can safely say Andy is a real, honest to goodness triple threat. The show is fun, lighthearted with some really laugh out loud funny song moments,(Harriet Foy has a great number in ACT1)and the story is cute with what i'd call a "love triangle story with a bit of a twist", but Andy is what kept it "afloat". I enjoyed Kevin Parriseau and Jim Stanyke(sp) as well and David Josefberg is always effective. Give Andy Karl a Broadway lead role RIGHT NOW. He'd make a great Fiyero, or an even better Prince in Spamalot.

How funny, I've wondered how Andy would work as Fiyero as well! It would definitely get me to revisit Wicked, I think he'd be wonderful. I would love to see him create another original role though. He was the best part of Altar Boyz for me when I saw it, I very much enjoy him in Slut, and I'd love to see him take on another new role. But anything that gets him significant stage time will do! That man is one talented dude.
I'm with Girlfriend, I'm all for Karl originating something bigger and better that's worthy of his talents. Fiyero, pffft! Sorry Rup, he's just better than the role.
In terms of a replacement part...I keep saying this and I still believe that he is the guy who should take over the role of Freddy when Norbert leaves DRS.

broadwaystar2b, sadly, the show is only a limited run, and will have its final performance on 11/13.
Andy is what got me coming back to see Altar Boyz as many times as I did this summer, and he's absolutely phenomenal in Slut. And not only is he a fantastic singer, dancer, and actor, but he's also quite possibly the most genuine and nicest person I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I have so much love and respect for that man.
He DEFINITELY needs to be originating another role. I cannot wait to see whatever he gets lined up next after Slut finishes.
I'm going to stick to thinking Karl should originate something new, but as far as DRS and Butz, Andy has far more leading man looks and I can see why you'd think he wouldn't be the ideal replacement for him, however, if you're going by the movie, Steve Martin is a very handsome man, just funny, which is why I'd see people recommending Karl. He's got both the looks and the comedy skills. Updated On: 10/17/05 at 02:28 PM
Andy definitely deserves a role to originate; he certainly has the talent. And, as others have said, he is extremely sweet off-stage. (I know, I know..."Who cares what people are like in REAL life as long as they turn in a fab performance?" Well, I just think it feels good when "nice" people make it. It proves you don't HAVE TO be "cut-throat" to succeed.)
I saw him in ABZ 5 times and each time my respect for his talent expanded. Even though the character of Luke is "out there," Andy managed to deliver a kind of "understated" performance, which made Luke plausible.
I can't even believe I'm analyzing Altar Boyz like it's Tennessee Williams here. I guess I just love Andy! (And his "zaniness" is perfect for Freddy Benson. Could you imagine him as Ruprecht???)
I'm seeing SLUT on Thursday. Can't wait.

Maybe it's just me, but I think David's handsome. Plus I think he absolutely has the comedic skills. But I still can't see Andy as Freddy. Especially Ruprecht. I think Andy is gorgeous and ridiculously talented, especially when it comes to comedy, but that role.. just.. no. Not working in my head. LOL Updated On: 10/17/05 at 11:28 PM
It's not just you, David's very handsome and wears his jeans fabulously. But I'm such an Andy girl...I don't think there's anything the man can't do. And he's gorgeous to boot. Haven't seen DRS yet, so I can't comment on that. Updated On: 10/18/05 at 12:03 AM

Exactly. Couldn't agree more, in general and in regards to Andy.
For the record, I have to say that I think EVERY one of the original ABz cast members is adorable and extremely talented. And I mean EVERY one of them. I have not seen any of them in anything else yet (except Ryan a long time ago in DC), so I don't know their "range." Andy's Luke was very silly. That's why I can see him playing Freddy. Maybe David can do it, too, but his role in ABz was more "serious." Perhaps on Thursday when I see Slut, I will see something different, who knows?
I agree with all the other people who posted earlier stating that "Andy can do anything." And that Steve Martin comment by Al Dente is quite insightful. I had a huge crush on Steve Martin when I was in college. I think he's still really attractive (and hilarious)!

Haha, oh my God, YES.
In regards to range with the other original Boyz? Well, if we're talking about the swings, Kevin Kern was the final Marius in Les Mis and Daniel Torres is going to be first u/s for Walter Hartwright in Woman in White when that opens.
As GirlfriendfromCanada already said, this is EXACTLY the case, miss pennywise. You hit the nail on the head about Andy. Can't wait to hear your thoughts about Slut.
I could go on and on, gushing about Andy and how wonderful he is, but I'll save you all from that and just say yet again how I have a great deal of love and respect for the man. He's a wonderful all around person. He deserves all the success in the world, in whatever roles he ends up doing.
He is a very nice man and no, it doesn't matter what a performer is like off the clock, so to speak, but it sure is a refreshing switch from the norm. I worry though, that really nice performers get taken advantage of, because of the very fact that they're kind and polite. Sometimes the fans (myself included) get a bit carried away and overstep the line now and again.
Back to Andy, how much would I love to see him to Ruprecht?
I guess it's just me, but I thought Andy was the least likeable character in Slut. don't get me wrong. he is very pretty, and talented, but I just didn't like his characterization. I found him shallow, and too self involved to be liked, which I guess is the point of his character. but some people, like steve martin have the ability to play slimy characters that you feel for. With andy, I just didn't get it and wasn't able to emphasize with his character, even when times got tough for him. when he plays slimy, it just came off as slimy with no redeeming chararceristics. I just though "good, he got what he deserved"
I saw it slut in previews. maybe he has changed, I would love to see it again, and I hope I like him better the next time.
