Why Broadway? To open an unknown property on Broadway (even if you could secure a theatre, which is unlikely) is suicidal. Why not focus on getting it done off- or off-off Broadway, or in the regions, and see if it develops heat.

It is called 223 Brush Street and it's about... ?! Unless that is some famous address that eludes me, you didn't reach the hook yet.

You have my full support, as long as it doesn't require any money or effort on my part.

“223 Brush Street”A two act play, set in 1906 Detroit. I am looking for backers who would like to see this play produced in the city of Detroit, since it is an actual part of Detroit history, in the Fox Theater."

Gee, if this is any good at all, the Detroit theatres should be jumping at this.  From there, after a few years and many rewrites, perhaps it would be ready for Broadway.  What did the Detroit theatres (even the University theatre departments) have to say about this play?

Or have I missed the part where it has already been successfully produced in Detroit as you originally asked.?

I was unaware there is a huge demand on Broadway for historical plays set in 1906 Detroit, but what do I know?

Never underestimate the use of a simple no, thank you.

My apologies. After further reading on your blog I see that two years ago you had some student volunteers for the project at Wayne State, but the project fell through.  So I guess since you couldn't get any interest in it in Detroit, you're going for the next best thing -- Broadway.  Great idea.

"223 Brush Street" was the address of a real life, elite bordello in 1906 Detroit. It was famous in its time as the place for wealth businessmen could go for an excellent time with the finest wine, food, silk sheets and beautiful, but fallen young women. It is "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" but without the songs.  It was never raided and functioned quietly just like the house in Texas. It's not well known in Detroit history because it was run so quietly and safe from city police. But it was a  legend at the time and I believe it deserves some  recognition

I don't think it's quite suicidal, but it sure is reaching for the stars. Might as well give it a try. All I can get is a no.

Seems Detroit theaters don't have any interest in it. Even after I explained how it is about real Detroit history. My bet is these theaters are more interested in producing their own written plays then someone else's. I'll bet there was no interest in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" for Broadway either.  An interesting play can come from anywhere. Especially if it isn't a play based on a movie already filmed. Sure seems that's all on Broadway now. No fresh ideas from original playwrights.

So what is the central conflict?  If there isn't a conflict (and from you described there isn't one) there isn't a story.

You're best bet is to get it produced SOMEWHERE.  Then feedback can be gained and improvements can be made.   Trying to get an unknown story, by an unknown writer is near impossible.

Why not try some play festivals?  There are many to choose from, and you can submit and produce to multiple ones if your script is accepted.  Then you produce some reviews, feedback and you can show producers that "somebody" thought it was good.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Merritt, reaching for the stars is all well and good but even seasoned playwrights rarely open plays cold on Broadway. If you want to reach the stars and not just have a pipedream, I suggest finding a ladder to make it more plausible that you will get there. But you would not be the first person to focus too high.

Could you see an older actress in the role?
