This is a very knowledgeable group, so the question here is a song that is an absolute favorite of yours
from a musical, that is NOT one of the best known songs from a show, or from a lesser known show.
here are two examples.....
my favorite lately is:
"Original Musical' from [Title of Show]
this is a hilarious commentary on broadway musicals, and the character of the notepad is hysterical...almost a randy newman vibe going here
on the more serious side:
"Soul of a Man" from Kinky Boots
keep seeing Stark Sands just singing his face off during this song, and the lead guitar riff on this is fantastic....(its the 8th most popular song from Kinky on itunes, so that counts as lesser known)
I've always loved "You Are So Beyond" from Marilyn: An American Fable, but there's really no good recording of it. It's lovely though, with this undercurrent of deep paranoia. It's a song about someone who stalks Marilyn Monroe after all.
"The Music That Makes Me Dance" from the Broadway production of FUNNY GIRL (replaced in the film with "My Man". It's my all time favorite Jule Styne song and no one sang it better than Ms. Streisand.
"I Never Know When" on the OBCR of Goldilocks is a treasure delivered by the incomparable Elaine Stritch. The simple yet nuanced storytelling on that one is stunning.
Another one that comes to mind is Angela Lansbury's "I Don't Want to Know" from the OBCR of Dear World. Its excitement is infectious and never fails to make me smile.
Most of my favorite songs are from popular shows or are at least well-known outside of the show. But off the top of my head I'll give a shout out to "Not Since Nineveh" from Kismet and "Blood on the Snow" from Doctor Zhivago.
I'll see Kad's "Love Me..." and raise him "I Am Wearing a Hat".
I also love "Music that Makes Me Dance", but it has occurred to me over years of listening to the song that nothing about the music suggests anyone is "dancing". The lyric really should be "His is the only music that makes me SING", but, but, of course, "sing" is a very closed-off dipthong and consonant cluster. And nobody wanted to make Streisand (or anyone else) sing the high note on that word.
The movie version of "The Glamorous Life" from A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.
My favorite score in the whole world could actually be improved when it came to writing the movie soundtrack. (At least in this one respect. Much of the rest of the film is a travesty.)
"It's Getting Hotter in the North" (Kern, Hammerstein)
The original big closing number of Show Boat that was not used in the original Broadway production, or any major Broadway revival, or any of the three film versions.
Not crazy about the Frederica von Stade vocal on the McGlinn collection, but expecting an opera star to sing a jazz vocal is asking a lot.
Tell Me on a Sunday. (Or at least it's not known by people my age.) I've never seen it performed or anything but I sang it at a voice recital once. As someone who (like most people) has been dumped in crummy ways I always liked the lyrics. Now you'd have to add something about texting though.
