There's a Broadway Box discount for half off, I believe.

Also, any reports from any of the previews so far?  I haven't seen/heard any chatter and I'm curious...my tickets aren't until later October!

I saw it last week and genuinely loved it.

Beautiful score. Wonderful jewel box staging. Perfect orchestrations, perfectly cast. McGinnis is delivering a star turn. The story is wonderfully told and the staging is creative, economical and evocative. You never doubt exactly where you are supposed to be.

Saw the show this afternoon and found it utterly charming.  Paul Nolan is in fantastic voice and Megan McGinnis is an absolute delight. I bought tickets to this show on a whim and am so glad I did, a lovely way to spend an afternoon

Ts wonderful romantic, isn't it? And the storytelling is so beautiful. The set design and projections are quite evocative.

Nolan was wonderful, and I could picture a number of fantastic singer actors in that role. McGinnis, I felt, carries the night on her shoulders and the list of women I'd like to see in that role was far shorter.

Great, I'm so excited to see it.

Just bumping this. Anyone have any news about rush or student tix?

I saw this last night (via TDF) and the show is pleasant enough with two talented performers, but the structure can't support the overly long run time and the orchestrations are painfully at odds with the setting. It sounds like they were trying to ape Jason Robert Brown, in particular The Last 5 Years, and it feels very wrong for the story. The lyrics aren't insulting, but they're often undistinguished.

The play is set up like Love Letters, the two characters reading and singing a one-sided letter writing affair. What makes Love Letters such a remarkable piece is that though it is set up as nothing but the reading of a correspondence between two childhood friends, Gurney does far more showing than telling and the final emotional pay off can be quite genuine. Gurney also is smart enough to keep through curveballs at the audience and smartly keeping the couple apart for most of the narrative.

Daddy Long Legs announces its premise quickly and you instantly see where it will lead. There's no surprise to be found, so especially in the second act I just kept thinking, "Get on with it!" Instead of showing us via anecdote that a character doesn't fit (or whatever the situation may be) the character simple announces it, often singing their frustrations and joys out in the most straightforward (read: dull) way possible.

The evening would be much worse if it weren't for the really lovely performances by McGinnis and Nolan. McGinnis in particular is very warm and in perfect voice. Sometimes they both err on the side of pop inflection, but I blame the score/orchestrations for these overzealous missteps.

Act one was better than act two, which contains several stops and starts that rehash the same feelings and struggles over and over again. Were this a NYMF show I would be congratulating them on a great start to having something solid. Seeing how this has been bouncing around for years I fear this is as good as it will get.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

The cast recording came out a few years ago and I enjoy the score quite a bit.

It has very sparse instrumentation. I never really heard strains of JRB before, but perhaps the new orchestrations push that angle as you mentioned.

Either way, it always seemed very intimate and best suited to a tiny space with no frills. I never thought it would be a long runner, but I wish it success.

....but the world goes 'round

I was going to do 20at20 tonight but I'm not going out in this weather. I'm surprised that we haven't heard about any performances being cancelled.

For those who haven't heard, there's going to be a new cast recording made for this production (in addition to the existing recording).

Saw this tonight via 20at20 (learned about it from this thread, so thanks)

I think many of Whizzer's critiques are accurate. Definitely could have been done as a one act. I like Paul Nolan's performance more than Megan. She was good, but sometimes a bit too over-the-top. Between Dr. Zhivago and this, I'm realizing that Nolan is very talented, and in general, under appreciated. I'd love to see him in lots of other roles. Robert in Bridges of Madison County comes to mind first.

anyway, not my favorite thing, but it was sweet and heartfelt. A pleasant enough afternoon at the theatre.

Thankfully the rain let up so I was able to see this through 20at20. I was thoroughly charmed. There was more humor than I thought there would be. Every joke didn't land but plenty of them did. It was more like a very sweet romantic comedy than a period piece. Though I did like the set and I admired the way they used the small space. There's a part where they transition to the farm that feels like one of those "magic of theatre" moments even though it's something so simple.

Megan has a really lovely voice. I don't know if I would have noticed the JRB-ness of the orchestrations if I hadn't read your review, Whizzer, but they seemed to clash more with her voice than his. Though I agree that the first act was stronger, I found the orchestrations overpowering her vocals more in the very beginning of the show so I was happy to hear her voice come through more in the latter part of the first act and in the second act. I'm biased because I love hearing Paul Nolan's singing so I think the repetition that came with him withholding his secret didn't bother me as much because it meant that he got to sing more songs. I didn't have as much of a problem with the lyrics. I bought into the epistolary form and even the non-letter songs felt true to the way the characters would put their emotions.

I liked the feminist bent of the show and I think it would make for a very sweet date night. The humor and the flawed nature of the characters undercuts what could have been too sentimental of a show.

I did 20fo20 tonight, and I thought the show was pretty good. It was a bit monotonous, and I think it would work better with a larger cast or more developed book/staging. The music was well done, and Nolan was really good. The gem here though is McGinnis, who practically IS the whole show. Worth seeing just for her.

"Daddy Long Legs announces its premise quickly and you instantly see where it will lead. There's no surprise to be found, so especially in the second act I just kept thinking, "Get on with it!""

Thinking it over, I would have to disagree. I think there's a certain inevitability in many romantic comedies and romances and, particularly given that there were only two actors here, after the first act I was reasonably sure that Jerusha wasn't going to go off with Jimmy McBride. But I think it was very possible that she could have chosen to be alone and pursue her writing or run the orphanage. Think of Jo March or Lucy Snowe.

I saw this yesterday and found it rather charming.  First act definitely better than the second.  I did find the big "reveal" to be disappointing.

MAJOR SPOILERS*****************************

I really thought it would've been much more dramatic for Jerusha to find out Mr. Smith identity herself - by coming to Jervie's home to confront him and seeing her letters pinned up on his bookshelves.  I found the moment to be rather anti-climatic and her transition from anger to love too quick.  I also found her love for Jervie to come out of nowhere.  It was obvious from the very beginning where this was heading - very Shop Around The Corner/She Loves Me/In The Good Old Summertime.

My friends and I saw DLL yesterday and adored it. Great songs and two very strong performances. And if you enjoyed the book (as two of us had), it's such a treat to finally get Jervis's point of view! His character arc is very interesting, from someone who's more than happy to hide behind a secret identity, to someone who's sick of it but doesn't know how to get rid of it. Though the ending was somewhat different from that of the book, I thought it was very well handled, and beautifully acted by both.

Also, I loved the set. I have a weakness for book-lined sets (My Fair Lady, Freud's Last Session, you name it). Daddy Long Legs Rush?
