Question about whether to see OTT or Curious Incident

I'm going to NYC on September 2. My question is whether I should see Alex Sharp perform in CURIOUS INCIDNET OF THE DOG IN NIGHTTIME (he's leaving the performance and won the Tony for his first acting role out of Juliard) or see ON THE TOWN which is a musical (I'm writing a musical and worry I'll never get a chance to see ON THE TOWN performed again, however, my mom told me OTT was amateurish....so...) not sure which one to see.

What do you think?? Thanks

Having seen both shows, they are two great choices. But if I had to choose one it would be to see Alex Sharp in Curious Incident. His performance is so terrific and amazing, giving an energetic and highly compelling and emotional show on that stage. On the Town is very good but I wasn't thinking about it long after like I did Sharp's performance in Curious Incident. It really depends on your taste: if you want a compelling and visually stunning play see Curioys Incident and if you want a big Broadway musical with lavish sets and designs, see On the Town.

OTT is anything but amateurish. It is head and shoulders above An American In Paris. See it as you may never get to see it again or for a very very long time

On the Town. This is truly a glorious production.

Another vote for ON THE TOWN. A once-in-a-lifetime production of that musical. You will never see what's magical about this show any other way.

CURIOUS INCIDENT is a terrific play absolutely worth seeing, but I've seen performances with and without Alex, and the play is magnificent either way. It sounds like this show will be around a good while longer, so you should have opportunities to catch it down the road.

I've seen both as well, and I would see Curious incident again in a heartbeat.

You can't go wrong with either one.  They are both pretty wonderful, but I'd vote for OTT as well, since you'll have another opportunity for Curious.

OTT is old fashioned, but hardly "amateurish" about anything.  I will say, however, that fewer younger people seem to enjoy it greatly.  (Note: I didn't say ALL, so no need to jump on me for it.)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Both shows did announce tours, though it is unknown whether or not the On the Town tour is going to end up coming to fruition at this point. So I'm gonna have to give another vote to On the Town.

See Curious Imcident. OTT is a great revival but bored me so bad. The production itself is good but the Book is not. It's very irrelevant and definitely not the best musical out there.

Curious Incident is beautifully written and Alex Sharps performance left me in tears. It was the first show I ever cried in. See Curious Incident so you can see how to write a good show.

You appear to be outfitted and a minority voice here

I saw ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY and liked it, but that was because of Cheno. Is OTT similar to On the Twentieth?

Both entertaining but totally different in many ways

On the Town is a classic Golden Age musical.  On the 20th Century is... not.

I enjoyed OTTC (I saw 3x) so much more than OTT (found it boring and left at intermission, made me realize I don't like ballet heavy shows) But I will echo the opinion of a lot of folks on the board to see OTT. I think prima ballerina Misty Copeland is well worth the price of admission! If I lived in NYC I will go back and watch OTT.  There will be other chances to see Curioud Incident (that show is not going anywhere soon), but maybe not with Alex Sharp

OTT since it is closing. It was absolutely glorious. Nothing amateurish about it. Your mother must have VERY high standards. Haha.  Its a wonderful production with gorgeous dancing! Curious Incident will be around for a while and I'm sure whoever is replacing Alex Sharp will be just as good in their own way.

As astounding and profound as Alex Sharp's performance is, this production of On the Town is NOT to be missed.

Curious Incident. I 100% agree with your mom. Always listen to your mother.

Tony Yazbeck is confirmed for the OTT national tour. Might you have the opportunity to see that ? If so I would see Curious Incident in New York since it might be your only opportunity to see Alex in the role.

I saw Curious Incident in London and thought it was extraordinary, so I can absolutely say it doesn't need Alex Sharp to succeed.

On the Town - for all its "corny" jokes - is a masterpiece of music and dance, and you probably won't get a chance to see such a great production for a long time.

So you should definitely see both if you get the chance, but OtT should be the priority, imo.

Well, to clear this up... I had decided to see On the Town... When alas, a friend associated with the show informed me, "on Wednesday Sept. 2, there is only a matinee. What a bummer! (Why is their only a matinee??) I won't get there until 3:55PM on Wed Sept 2 and am only staying that night and won't be back until the 22nd. So... I guess it will be Alex Sharp and Curious Incident for me... Maybe I'll get to see OTT on tour?

The Curious Incident is the better show for sure (and this is coming from someone who prefers musicals to plays). On The Town is kind of amateurish in terms of plot and characters. But the quality of the production is of course not amateurish. But Curious Incident is so much richer.

You simply can not win for losing. I don't think Alex Sharp does Wednesday evening performances.

Alex doesn't do Wednesday nights.
