So talking to someone tonight about diversity in the theatre and Roundabout came up, in the last decade they have only produced TWO new plays by non-white writers (this past seasons Little Children Dream of God by Jeff Augustin and The Language Archieve by Julia Cho in the 2010-2011 season)  , they have had EIGHTY productions in the last decade, for a theatre company whose marketing tagline/message is Its About You, thats so unbelievable, granted we have had this discussion before, but hell even MTC has produced more diverse work in the last decade (Ruined, Choir Boy, The World Of Extreme Happiness, all spring to mind as recent examples) why specifically is it so BAD when it comes to Roundabout (and this isn't a casting rant) but more so why are they so afraid to produce non-white work, even in their off broadway spaces (seriously in the last decade only one play by a black writer was produced in their off-broadway spaces).

One of the reasons I wrote this post. Was because one of the facebook posts about the Noises Off Cast was Roundabout Theatre Company

That's a lot of white people. You will be awesome as always- but man, that's a really really white production

Amazing diversity. This is why my Yale degree means nothing in NY Theater.

What's with all the white people? No people of color available.

You just have to compare this to Aladdin

It's not just Roundabout. Mainstream theater is still a largely white (and male, and privileged) world, no matter what kind of lip-service is paid to cultural diversity. MTC may produce works by minority writers in their Off-Broadway spaces, but they've only produced one play by a non-white playwright (Regina Taylor's DROWNING CROW) on Broadway in the 12 years they've owned the Biltmore/Friedman. Lincoln Center has a pretty dismal track record with minority writers, too, although they seem to be trying to correct that to a degree with LCT3. Outside of The Public, there are very few theaters in New York that have really and truly committed to a diverse programming agenda.
