While this is WAY too early to be judging this considering we haven't seen any of these ladies' performances (and we don't even know who won this year!) I think, as of right now and depending on her performances, JHud is a lock-in for a featured nomination. '
We haven't seen any of these performances. How could anyone know if it will be an amazing season? It would have been much smarter to start a thread about this season...
Countdown til Jordan comes on raging about how much loves me! 3..2..1...
I mentioned this on another thread but I think it's worth mentioning again: even if we haven't seen any of these shows, it IS possible to make predictions about who the Tony contenders will be. Maybe we can't make definitive assumptions yet, but I don't think it's fair to immediately dismiss discussions like this, just because we haven't seen them. We know that high-profile, Tony-winning actresses like Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti, Jessie Mueller and Lea Salonga will all be starring in musicals this coming season, so it's a pretty good bet that they will be Tony-contenders
I saw HAMILTON tonight - there is definitely no leading actress. I think Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica) could be in the mix for Featured Actress. I think there may be more men in Hamilton deserving of Featured Actor Tony nods than there are slots in that category, but I guess that is a subject for another thread...
What an exciting season for lead actresses. The possibility of Benanti, Mueller, McDonald, and Erivo as nominees in the same category is quite exciting, though I'm sure there'll be a few surprises as the season progresses. Still, it's looking like yet another hell of a season for this category.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
"this category last season was ehh. This season though there are really so many true Broadway stars leading musicals. Is Jan Maxwell gonna be in a musical this season?"
Really? A category that saw the performances of Kelli O'Hara, Kristin Chenoweth, Chita Rivera, Beth Malone, and Leanne Cope (with O'Hara, Chenoweth, and Rivera receiving award-worthy raves from critics and audiences alike) was "ehh"?
As Barbara Weston says in one of her most inspired moments, "you'd have more credibility if you had any credibility." GO. AWAY.

This past season was one of the best for female actresses in a very long time--3 musical theater superstars giving some of the best in their lifetime and outstanding performances by 2 newcomers, plus the plethora of talent in featured actress and those that didn't make the final list is hardly "ehh."
I love hearing differing opinions, but I don't know how you can make a serious argument for last season being weak or boring when simply looking at the facts.
Leanne Cope? umm NO. Kristin, Kelli, and Chita are all amazing and are/were giving incredible performances, but the other leading ladies in musicals were just eh IMO. 2014 and 2012 were much stronger. Jessie, Sutton, Idina, Kelli, Mary, plus other deserving people that could have been in the category like Michelle Williams, and Kate Baldwin. THATS a great category! This season will be a great category as well. There were only 3 true broadway stars last season in this category.
