Kind of surprised, I thought for sure "NYC" would be in it with all the trailers making the city look great.

It's The Hard-Knock Life and You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile are on YouTube somewhere now as promos, not sure if they were posted on Broadwayworld.

Why do I have the sneaky suspicion that Cameron Diaz might end up being not only the worst part of the new ANNIE but so miscast that she could be up there with Lucille Ball in MAME. But I'm holding a shard of hope that she'll surprise me.

Looking at the song list and what it looks like the producers are doing to the piece, I will take a pass on it.

It is a shame that a really good definitive movie musical will appear to still not be done on the piece . When Hollywood does a Broadway musical, they usually take a meat ax to the score. It looks like about 1/2 of the Broadway score is gone.

Did anyone really expect the score to be intact though? Almost all the songs were written with specific references to the period that would just clash with the new take. Even the remaining songs had to be extensively rewritten to fit into a modern context.

I think it would have almost been more interesting to see an entirely new score to go with the new context - more an "inspired by" than a "based on." Then they wouldn't invite comparisons to the brilliance of the original score (at least not as much as when the old numbers are still wedged in between the new material). CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY on the west end had a similar problem with using a song from the movie.

It's hard to judge a score based solely on a track listing, but I'm intrigued by these new songs. Asia's new version of "You're Never Fully Dressed" is interesting based on what I've heard of it, but without being able to see the full lyrics and without knowing its in-film context, it's hard to get a complete 'read' on it.

I have heard both of them and I have to say they are quite fun. I love what Sia did to "Never Fully Dressed" -- it makes it quite quirky. I do also like Hard Knock Life.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

I too enjoyed the new take on "Never Fully Dressed." It took a song written in the style of the "cheer up even though you're broke" songs written during the depression and did it in the style of roughly the modern equivalent.

I wonder if the actual film scene will involve the orphans (foster kids) singing along to the song on the radio like in the show?

The only thing I'm sad about is losing "NYC," just because I love that song so much, it just makes me happen, especially on the OBCR. The "Star-to-Be" verse warms my heart.
And people need to get over the fact there are cut songs or that the songs are rearranged, that was key to getting the movie made, if you want to see a faithful adaptation, Rob Marshall directed a pretty good one that's readily available on video.
Also, how is Cameron Diaz miscast? She may not be good in the movie, but she has been known as one of the most famous comedic movie stars of her generation for over a decade; she's a clown who'll do anything for a laugh, something she has shown in film after film. If she doesn't do well in this, it's not because she wasn't properly cast.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

^I always thought that someone like Sandra Bullock would be more fitting to the role as was written to be in the stage show in some form or another, but with Diaz, I don't feel intimidated by her nor am I laughing. However as I have said before, I'm holding SOME hope that she does good; but with the partial leaked audio of her singing "Little Girls", my hope shrinks bit by bit.

I'm going to miss NYC as well. The way it was done in the 1999 version was beautiful, especially the part sung by Star-To-Be. Unfortunately, the lyrics were written for a show set in 1933, so I see why it was discarded. I'm really interested to see how "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here" is done. From the trailers, it looks like it would be a fun scene (I'm judging from the clips of Annie and Grace singing and I'm guessing that's the song they are performing).

Also, anyone who expected this to stay exactly the same as the original show is sadly mistaken. Lyrics and contexts have to change to fit the new setting.

There's nothing wrong with a show like Annie being presented exactly as originally written, but there's also nothing wrong with reinterpreting the material and making any changes needed to facilitate said reinterpretation. Yes, reinterpreting the show for the present day has resulted in the excision of some of the original's classic songs, but that's just the "nature of the beast", and it sounds, just based on the soundtrack listing description, as if "The City's Yours" is going to serve the same basic narrative function as "NYC".

Of the songs from the original that were kept, I'm the most interested in seeing how they've reinterpreted "Easy Street" for Hannigan and Bobby Canavale's character Guy, particularly given his role in the story as Will Stacks' campaign manager.

Looking forward to the new interpretation of material, which in its current form I'd be happy never to revisit again. Cameron Diaz looks like she is going to be hilarious.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I like the original material and think it still works even now, but only if the show is presented with little alteration from how it was originally conceived. For a modern adaptation like they've chosen for this film, some alterations to the lyrics and musical structure did need to be made, and I can't wait to see how they play out.

Diaz isn't the first person I would think of for Miss Hannigan, but I'm interested to see what she does with the role.
