Before there was ROCKY there was GOLDEN BOY!
Based on the Clifford Odets play of the same name (and adapted by the author) the show opened 50 years ago today at the Majestic Theater running 568 performances. It starred Sammy Davis Jr. and featured a fine score by Strouse & Adams.

I remember seeing it and enjoying it immensely
Great cast and score. Davis carried the show with Billy Daniels and Lola Falana.Her career was cut short by an illness. Never heard again from actress who played Lorna. On a whim, I went to the stage door ( I was 1
. There was no one there . I approached Sammy and had him sign the Playbill which I still have.
I remember him as being very gracious and not at all full of himself as one might expect.

Also interesting to note is that Sammy Davis Jr. was so unsatisfied with his vocals on the cast album that he actually went in and re-recorded a number of tracks for a reissue years later (re-issue cover above).
The original cuts remain unreleased on CD, including the much more chilling original finale reprise of "Gimme Some."
