"Why, why, why… With a fandom this big…are people not talking about THIS?
Our original London Les Miserables is, it seems in danger of being replaced by the reimagined version at or around the 30th anniversary.
Please, please, please read this interview with Cameron Mackintosh and see for yourself… A key piece is this…
"In the long-term, Mackintosh thinks it’s Les Misérables that will outlive us all. “It’s as potent in a class-room as it is on a Broadway stage.” Its revamped 25th anniversary version is being staged in 10 countries and it looks set to supplant the originating London incarnation when the 30th anniversary comes round next year.
Refreshing the look, feel and sound of his core portfolio obviously makes sense. This new version of Miss Saigon, directed by Laurence Connor (who also co-directed the new Les Misérables), will be grittier than the Nick Hytner-directed original. “We’ve been inspired by what went before but it’s less operatic, more authentic, more real.”
Please guys, if you value your original Les Mis please signal boost and sign the hell out of the petition that has been set up to voice opposition!
This is in no way bashing the reimagined version… I would love very much to see it, but most certainly not at the expense of our London original which is the only original format left.
The changes are creeping in already… Apparently the 24601 convicts look has now switched to the shaved head rather than the scraggly wig with the recent cast change.
Let’s do something while we can!
Please reblog, please tweet this, please Facebook this etc but most importantly please SIGN.
If we don’t act now it’ll be no good looking back later on and thinking ‘I wish we’d done something’.
Please don’t let the old les mis disappear!"
The fangirls have struck again! This is just stupid. Some of my favorite productions close all of the time and I don't make petitions to save it! I respect all of the people who have worked on both of the productions but get over it!
as much as I like the 'original' they have done so much changes over the years. Bring back the one that was 3+ hours with the muted costumes and I'll sign.
but seriously I'm not surprised, its all in the economics. To cut down on some of those 30 year old royalty payments and unfortunately the basic theatre goer won;t know the difference, which is sad.
Although if they try that with Phantom there will be riots, lol

That's completely different, roxy. Changing the original show in London to the new version would be a disservice to the show. I highly doubt Macintosh will change it but Dear God if he does...
Agreed, Eric. Way too much plot. It's one of the reasons that show never worked for me. They tried to fit so much of that massive Victor Hugo novel into one evening at the theatre that you never really get to savor any moments or feel any real dramatic tension. It's just quickly on to the next plot point and (admittedly very nice) pop ballad.
And, I'm sorry, but if you live in or visit London and haven't seen the "original" Les Mis (or what remains of it), you've only got yourself to blame now.
I prefer the original staging with the turntable. It seems odd to see it without. And there are some scenes that the turntable handled perfectly that are not well handled in the new version --I am thinking particularly of the Death of Gavroche, which was so dramatic in the original staging (possibly the most dramatic on stage death in the whole show), but which garnered laughter the night I saw the new version. In fact, the turntable was the perfect solution to the "How do we see BOTH sides of the barricade?" problem. If it ain't broke....
