I was at the show tonight and Andy Karl was injured in the first fight scene of the show. He finished the first act, but couldn't go on in the second act. From what I was told, he was elbowed in the arm and it started swelling. Hopefully he will make a fast recovery and be back tomorrow or the next day. His understudy, Vince Oddo, did the second act and did a very good job, especially considering he had very little notice that he was going on and finishing the show.
When I saw the show a couple weeks ago, the actors did a talk-back with my group. They told us there is a fight choreography call before every show that is required by Equity so this kind of thing doesn't happen. But there are bound to be accidents every now and then
Yes, any show that features fights, conplex lifts or things they might prove risky to an actor ALL have a call before the house opens to rehearse those elements so that everyone is comfortable and on the same oage for the day, particular if any swings or understudies will be on. Safety is ALWAYS paramount and naturally, accidents do happen.
It seems that Oddo found out that he would be going on for act two when he was at his dressing room station and stage management made an announcement in the backstage intercom. No disrspct to Karl, but I would rather see and hear Oddo ANY day. He really IS Rocky in many ways and he sings like a dream.
Jordan, I was saying "yay" because in a two week span, Vince Oddo has gone on for Rocky. I like when understudies have their opportunity to shine. Obviously, I feel bad for Andy getting hurt.
