Did anyone else go to the show last night? Not a single musical theater song, though she was quick to tell us all that she was "home" and happy to be back in NYC. She did dedicate her song "Gin and Cigarettes" to Elaine Stritch, who she'd always thought of like a grandmother.
I'm not entitled to anything other admission to the show, so I don't want to complain too much, and what she did sing, naturally, was flawless and fun. But bringing Eden Espinosa and a pregnant Megan Hilty onstage and having them sing back-up for a non-theater song about being free, idk folks...
Again, technically sound show, in a fun space, (TERRIBLE SERVICE, btw) with a few girls I love hearing. But only one song from the new O'Farrell St. album, nothing from the "Superhero" album, and no musical theater stuff.
I thought the show was amazing! Although yes that venue is not the best. It was my first time there and I was kinda shocked that it's a music venue considering how bad the sound is. Also I ended up sitting at one of the railings and literally never got served. But hey I don't mind not paying the minimum!
I though the show itself was great! I liked hearing her sing new stuff and not to kill your dream but Shoshana really isn't about musical theatre anymore. Last time she was in NY I saw her do two shows, one at Ars Nova and one at XL and neither of them featured any musical theatre. I think the dream of Shosh singing musical theatre should be put to bed. I can't wait for her to put another album out, I know it will probably be a while but she grew so much as a writer between Superhero and O'Farrell Street that I'm really eager to hear what else she writes. Really wish the sound had been better though because I did have trouble understanding her lyrics sometimes.
Without bread we'd just be hungry
but without theatre we'd be dead
Hearing that she didn't do any theater stuff last time she was here does make me feel a little better about last night; it lets me know that I expected/hoped for something I was highly unlikely to get.
I was there. I love Shoshana and will be going to the second show on Saturday. She actually did a workshop/reading of a new musical while in NY last week, but yes MT is not her focus at all anymore and I do not anticipate ever seeing her on the stage in that capacity again. The last time she was in NY was nto at Ars Nova or XL (tht was 2 years ago) it was back in October, also at the cutting room, where she performed a few songs from O'Farrell street. You can watch an archived video of that show on their website. She had said going into last night that she would be performing new tunes, so that is what I was expecting. Gin and Cigarette's was a welcome surprise. I loved that song when she first performed it in DC back in 2010 and was not sure if it would make the cut for the next album, so glad that it did.
