On my way to Long Island for a few days so I've only packed a standard sized backpack but it's completely full. It fits under my legs on the train so I don't see it being an issue fitting under my legs in a theatre but I'm seeing a show today with nowhere to drop it off. Will I be fine taking it into the theatre? Will they let you coat check it? I always worry too much haha thanks for any help

You can coat check it if you want to. I've brought a full-sized backpack with me to my seat and never had a problem, though.

I always have my backpack on me when I see shows. Often, I'll be pulled aside to for the bag to be searched quickly, but I've never had a problem after that.

As someone who has sat beside another person with a huge backpack, be considerate and check it if you can.

I always backpack, I would like to think I am always courteous...but I have never checked mine. Maybe it depends on the size..mine always fits directly under my seat. It may take a little of my leg room but no one else's.

I use the stuff in my bag so I wouldn't want to check it. I usually come with an extra sweatshirt, sometimes socks(if I am not wearing them outside) in case the theater temperature is set to TUNDRA. Also an occasional change of shoes during bad weather. Water to drink, tissues..etc. So I like to keep it with me.

I'm the same. I always have a bag as I don't like keeping stuff in my pockets. Never checked it and never had a problem. It was only hard during the winter months with a coat, scarf, and a bag. But I've survived.

Are coat checks open during the summer and would they accept shopping bags?

I also ALWAYS have it by my feet; I don't want to it to distrub anyone or take anyone else's footspace except my own. Usually I'll put my feet on top of it.

If the theater won't check your bag, I have had no problems checking my bag at the Crowne Plaza, The Marriott Marquis or the Westin. You just give the attendant a nice tip, and they don't seem to care if you stay there or not. I have never had any problems.

As long as your bag fits under your seat or completely within your space, and doesn't intrude on the space of others, you should be fine.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I'm curious if those who stash their backpack under their seat are aware that most people extend their legs under the seat in front of them? It's a little naive to say that putting it under your own seat is not bothering anyone else. Of course if it's "stadium" like or stepped seating, then under your seat really won't impact anyone else. But I have been bothered by things (usually shopping bags) under the seat in front of me so that I couldn't extend my legs to a normal position.

I am really short so I can't claim to have a problem with that. It bugs me more when the person next to me sees that I don't bring ten million bags in and wants to use the space around me and under my seat for their stuff.
Re: Extension of feet under seat in front of you: I guess I always thought that if it fit under a seat (like on an airplane) it was okay. The space under the seat in front of you was meant for putting bags (or so I believed).
