I often see people use "The Shuberts" as shorthand for the organization. I know back in the day, the Shubert brothers ran the company, but are there any members of the family executives of the foundation? I know there's at least one Nederlander in Nederlander. - is Ju... Jam... or Cyn... in Jujamcyn?

There are no more Shuberts running "The Shuberts." I believe the last ones who were involved with the company died in the early 60's.

Jujamcyn was founded by James H. Binger who named the company for his children Judith, James and Cynthia. He also re-named one of his theaters the Virginia after his wife (though it's now known as the August Wilson).

There have been no members of the Shubert family involved with "the Shuberts" for several decades; the last was Lawrence Shubert Lawrence. Jujamcyn was named for the three children of former owner James Bingham - his children were Judith, James, & Cynthia.

Actually Kertu Shubert who was a widow of somebody was on the Board of Directors. She died in the mid-1980s at an advanced age. She was the last woman to be on the Board for 25 years or so. You will notice a noted lack of women's names in the list of titled employees of the Shubert Organization that is printed in every Shubert-owned theatre Playbill.

Kertu was well-liked by the "real" employees because she would talk to them. By "real" I mean usherettes, ticket takers and low level folk. She related to them well. You'd go to the Shubert Christmas Party and she's be with the "ladies". I've never heard a bad word about her.

When someone refers to "The Shuberts" they are actually referring to the corporate entity now run by Bob Wankel and Phil Smith.
