The Curse of Oedipus at Antaeus is terrific. Hearing good things about Stupid F*CKing Bird at Boston Court in Pasadena.

I don't know if you consider these must see shows, but Once will be at Pantages and We will Rock You at Ahmanson.

"Buyer and Cellar" with Michael Urie is at the Mark Taper which if you haven't seen it I would consider that a "must see". It is a truly terrific piece of theatre with a truly amazing performance. If you are in LA this weekend July 12 and 13 LA Theatre Works is presenting "August: Osage County" with many members of Steppenwolf and the original Bway cast in a radio play version. I saw it last night, and it was riveting. A number of theaters are in between seasons, but for a change there is The Pageant of The Masters in Laguna Beach about an hour and a change south of Los Angeles. The Pageant is a decades-old summer event where artists and "actors" recreate paintings and statues -works of art - in living tableaux. I turned my nose up at the Pageant for years thinking it was kind if kitschy - as in "The Music Man" - "One Grecian urn... Two Grecian urns!" But I went a couple of years ago and I was wrong. Yes it's an old-fashioned kind of concept, but it's quite wonderful - very creative with a full orchestra and some marvelous effects in a beautiful outdoor environment in a cute beach town.

We just caught the second preview of Michael Urie in BUYER AND CELLAR at the Mark Taper last night amid a nearly capacity crowd at the theater. Reminded us again how beautiful a setting the whole Music Center complex can be on a lovely summer evening-- the fountains, architecture, al fresco dining, and cosmopolitan theater and opera-going crowd show off a segment of LA summer life at its best.

That said, our take on the play itself was a mixed bag-- Dazzling performance by Michael Urie of a pretty-good almost-but-not-quite a play. Yes, you laugh uproariously at the insider jokes about Barbra or Arthur (Laurents) or James (Brolin). And yes, Michael Urie is captivating playing every role with precision and a kind of bitchy but loving respect. Very much a delight while you're sitting there, but you start to wonder what the point was 10 minutes after leaving the theater.
