Posted: 3/28/14 at 4:53pmWondering if there is any "buzz" about the upcoming musical with music written by Sting. Rock stars have not always had success with trying to to write a Broadway musical (U2, Paul Simon) although Elton John has had success. I think it has a tryout in June (Chicago) and scheduled for Broadway in October.

Posted: 3/28/14 at 7:21pmIt's hard to put Paul Simon and U2 in the same bucket, though. U2 wrote a bunch of songs then went off on tour and were not really involved throughout the preview process, aside from getting video sent to them to watch in between stadium concerts. Paul Simon was at preview performances and took his role very seriously. Of course, Green Day was rather involved in Idiot.

They were involved but I believe all of the music was already from albums they had recorded already and not for the actual Broadway show.

As far as "pop" songwriters go, there's also Randy Newman's FAUST, which played regionally and is being done by Encores Off-Center as a one-night concert.
Is Barry Manilow's HARMONY still aiming for Broadway? His COPACABANA was supposedly awful.
Jimmy Buffett also wrote a musical that was done in Florida.

I have the Buffet CD called " Can't Stop The Carnival" Early parrothead music that will never see Broadway
I have the Faust CD. Turns out there is now a 2 cd version available on Amazon.

His PBS concert didnt get me interested either.Supposedly cost $14m if you believe reports. Tickets sales in chicago are`nt brillant either. Even some Chicago critics say its got closure notice written all over it when he did promo. Dont think this will be a long runner.

Who? I live in Chicago and there is far more buzz for this than there was for Big Fish.

So, based on him doing a concert version, with little book and no sets, they are able to know what it will be like when fully staged/realized? Wouldn't being psychic be more lucrative than being a theater critic?

You are of course free to state your opinion based on having not seen a show that has not yet even been created, but when you say that some critic followed you down that path, it behooves you to say who you are maligning and/or misquoting.

The subject matter is not family fare which many tourists look for.I did enjoy what I heard so we will wait and see how it develops going forward.

Yes, but there is a difference between doing a album of the songs you wrote for a musical and having a musical have songs from album almost 5 yrs old. Since you had smiley face and a wink assume you were just having fun.
