I've booked my first trip to NY from London for the end of September and I'm looking for advice on what shows to see. I have already booked The Glass Menagerie, frankly because I love Zachary Quinto (but Tennessee Williams writes good plays too)
I would really love to see Pippin, there was a production over here a few years ago that I really enjoyed. And Newsies, even though its supposed to be transferring to the West End I can't wait that long!
Questions:
Is Cinderella as great as the ticket sales suggest? How is the off-broadway Avenue Q production? I really miss that show! Will Amy Spanger still be in Chicago 18th Sept?
I want to catch a few shows that I've never seen and go in blind, just looking for advice on what's good right now, I don't want to waste money or time on something that I won't enjoy. I won't be seeing Spider Man...
I just got back from seeing Cinderella, and I can safely say that in my eyes, The Cast is still in top form. It is such a fun show- Victoria Clark vocals gave me chills, Ann Harada stole every scene she was in, Harriet Harris was perfection as The Stepmother/Madame. It was a wonderful evening.
I would GREATLY recommend Pippin. I would also recommend Kinky Boots- It's SOOOO much fun!
You will find very split decisions on Cinderella, indeed.
I would encourage both Pippin & Kinky Boots, as well. I saw Glass Menagerie when it started here in Boston last spring and it was GLORIOUS.
Hope you love your trip!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Congratulations on your first trip to the Big Apple. Run...don't walk to go see "Pippin." It will blow your mind away. With regards to Amy Spanger, her last day in Chicago is tomorrow (Sunday, August 11th). I'm not sure who'll be the newest Roxie...but if it is Bianca Marroquin, that would be swell. She's a top notch performer and one of the two best Roxies around (the other one being Charlotte D' Amboise). Terra C MacLeod will be Velma from August 13--18th, then she leaves to prepare for the Chicago National Tour. Oh...and you'll get a chance to see the very good looking and talented Ryan Silverman, who starts out as Billy Flynn, towards the end of August. Good luck... "Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
Cat123 I think you have made solid choices! Use this promo code :73ZOO for Newsies you can purchase the $157.00 tickets for just $73 on ticket master! I saw Avenue Q at New World Stages I enjoyed it. In September (not sure exactly when it starts) they also have $20 for off broadway shows 20 mins before curtain. You should also try to see Kinky Boots! I don't think you will regret it :) Updated On: 8/10/13 at 10:56 AM
You'll love New York and find it fascinating comparing an American audience to an English one! Kinky Boots is great as long as you can ignore the accents. Billy Porter is fabulous. I think Andrea Martin is in Pippin and she is always great value for money. I was always a big Tennessee Williams fan until I saw an incredibly turgid Roundabout production of a Glass Menagerie in NYC a couple of years back - quite put me off but I will go see Sweet Bird of Youth in London before it finishes to see if that woos me back!
Don't miss Pippin, Matilda, and Newsies. All great shows! I liked Cinderella but not as much as the other 3. Not a fan of Kinky Boots but obviously others love it.
I highly recommend Newsies, First Date and Kinky Boots.

Kinky Boots doesn't appeal to me, it sounds very much like Priscilla which I hated! And a friend of mine saw it and didn't like it and we usually agree. Matilda is great but it's also in London, I want to see some stuff I'm not likely to see otherwise :)
Kathy-I concur completely. It is far superior to Priscilla. I highly recommend it. The story is interesting and Billy Porter is wonderful as is the entire cast. I liked it very much and whenever someone asks me what to see I almost always include Kinky Boots.
I see similarities between Priscilla and Kinky, but I loved Kinky and Priscilla was "blah". I also wouldn't miss First Date.

We get that you love FIRST DATE, muscle. We all get it!
I think it's kind of ridiculous that because two shows have drag queens in them you automatically lump them together. PRISCILLA was a fun night of camp while KINKY is a boring melange of pop cliches.
My recommendation would definitely be for PIPPIN and CINDERELLA. Not much else playing that's worth anything. If you can get a ticket to FIRST DATE very cheap and want something short and mindless then by all means go see that too.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER! It's as brilliant as it's Broadway counterpart, except that now it has half an audience of huge fans that know and love what each moment holds. It is still a completely transformative night of theater, hysterical, and damn sexy.
With regards to Cinderella, is it possible to get last minute tickets? Or had I better book?
Cinderella has been at about 80% capacity since the end of June, with the week of the Fourth of July being the only exception. You should be able to wait to buy a ticket and be perfectly fine. Currently, the only discount codes expire on Sept. 1 (that I know of) so some new ones may be released shortly.
I hope you enjoy the show! It truly is amazing to see the costume transformations, and "a lovely night" with the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein!
