..has broken the Top 5 in Billboard's Top Cast Albums. from Playbill.com

PS Classics' Off-Broadway cast recording of the Tony Award-winning musical Passion, which was released July 2 featuring Judy Kuhn, Ryan Silverman and Rebecca Luker, placed fifth on the Billboard Top Cast Album chart in its first week of release.

The expansive, two disc album came in behind the Broadway hits Wicked, Motown, Kinky Boots and The Book of Mormon. The album also finished at #16 in Top Internet Sales.

"This is the best first week we've had for an Off-Broadway cast album since 2003, so we're pretty thrilled," PS Classics co-founder Philip Chaffin told Playbill.com. "Off-Broadway shows don't usually make this kind of showing - sort of evidenced by the fact that all the other cast albums on the chart are Broadway or West End productions - but I think it's a real tribute to how the Classic Stage production hit home for a lot of people, and the enduring power of the piece itself. I will say we've had dozens of emails to our site from customers saying how moved they were by the recording, so it does seem to have hit a nerve."

The original Off-Broadway cast, with the addition of Tony Award nominee Luker, gathered May 18 to record the cast album of Classic Stage Company's acclaimed production that concluded its extended run in April.

Luker, a three-time Tony Award nominee for Mary Poppins, The Music Man and Show Boat, recorded the role of Clara on disc. Tony Award nominee Melissa Errico (High Society), who originated the role of Clara in the recent CSC revival, came down with bronchitis during the Off-Broadway run. Understudy Amy Justman assumed the role of Clara in her absence. Errico remained on vocal rest and was unable to participate in the recording.

Luker previously appeared in The Kennedy Center's 2002 revival of Passion, which also featured Tony Award nominee Kuhn (Chess, Les Misérables) as Fosca. Kuhn, who re-explored the role in the acclaimed Classic Stage Company revival of Passion this spring, is reunited with Luker on disc. The leading trio also features Silverman (The Phantom of the Opera) as Giorgio.

The album is the most expansive treatment of the Tony Award-winning 1994 musical to date. PS Classics co-founder Tommy Krasker previously told Playbill.com that the recording includes over 40 tracks on two discs.

The album is available by visiting PSClassics.com. The original Broadway cast recording is currently out of print in CD package format, though it's available digitally.

The Tony Award-winning 1994 musical, which features a libretto by James Lapine, was intimately staged by Tony Award winner John Doyle (Sweeney Todd, Company, Road Show). Passion began previews Feb. 8 and officially opened Feb. 28. Critics embraced Doyle's production.

The cast also included John Antony, Tony nominee Stephen Bogardus (Colonel Ricci), Jeffry Denman (Lieutenant Barri), Jason Michael Evans (Private Augenti), Amy Justman (understudy), Ken Krugman (Lieutenant Torasso), Orville Mendoza (Sergeant Lombardi), Tom Nelis (Doctor Tambourri) and Will Reynolds (Major Rizzoli/Ludovic).

Passion had musical direction by Rob Berman and orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick. It had costumes by Ann Hould-Ward, lighting by Jane Cox and sound by Dan Moses Schreier. Makeup design was by Angelina Avallone. Hair consultants were J. Jared Janas & Rob Greene.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

As someone who loved Melissa in this show (and I don't usually love her) and thought she was by far the best part, I have to say that Rebecca Luker sounds even better on the album. That woman has one of the best voices ever.

From my review:

Torn between the two women, Ryan Silverman's Giorgio is brought to substantial and impressive life with his splendid tenor. Silverman's displays of love, passion, and revulsion are poignant and transcendent, which makes numbers like "Happiness," "Is This What You Call Love?," and "No One Has Ever Loved Me" all the more enriching and powerful.

Clara, sung in a spirited soprano by Rebecca Luker, is lusciously romantic. Each of her moments is sung with delicate precision. Her numbers such as "Happiness," "Sunrise Letter," "Forty Days," and "Milan" are sweet and affectionate. All of this builds so that the audience understands Clara's resigned devastation in "Farewell Letter."

The star of the musical is mezzo soprano Judy Kuhn who imbues her villainous Fosca with exquisitely melodramatic darkness. Her pathological fixation with Giorgio awakens an unnerving current inside her character, and it continuously grows until Giorgio is completely entrapped in her fanatical love. Her insanity is brilliantly crafted in the score and lyrics, and made both unsettling and pitiful in numbers like "I Read" and "I Wish I Could Forget You." Even as Fosca grows more predatory, Kuhn moves the audience to feel sympathy for her.
